Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dewey Cox
Answer: Walk Hard
Or, to give it its full title, 'Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story'. Starring John C Reilly as the fictional singer in question, 'Walk Hard' chronicles the life of Dewey Cox as he goes from his humble beginnings on a farm to millionaire rock star, playing rock 'n' roll, psychedelia, country, punk, and many more styles, and having many mishaps with women and drugs along the way.
The film lovingly parodies many bands, from Elvis (played by Jack White of the White Stripes) and Johnny Cash to the Beach Boys and the Beatles (with Jack Black doing one of the most unconvincing Scouse accents ever).
The promotional poster for the film is a parody of a very famous photo of Doors singer Jim Morrison.
2. Camel Lips
Answer: Serial Mom
Beverley Sutphin is a serial killer dubbed the 'Serial Mom', who kills people for annoying her. When an old woman called Mrs Jensen argues with Beverley's son Chip and calls him a 'son of a psycho', Beverley beats her to death with a leg of lamb. Chip's friend Scotty witnesses the murder, and Beverley chases him in her car.
She finds him at a Camel Lips gig in a club, and sets him on fire. Camel Lips were played by an actual band - L7, to be exact. While all this is going on, they sing a song called 'Gas Chamber'.
3. Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes
Answer: Star Wars - Episode IV: A New Hope
Featuring Figrin D'an on kloo horn, Tend Dahai and Ickabel G'ont on fanfar, Doikk N'ats on Dorenian Beshniquel, Nalan Cheel on bandfill, and Tech M'or on Ommni Box. Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes are a group of round-headed, big-eyed aliens called Bith, and 'Star Wars' fans will know them as the band playing in the Mos Eisley Cantina, that wretched hive of scum and villainy.
The music they play is known as 'j'izz'. The members of the band were actually played by a group of special effects artists. John Williams wrote the music.
4. The Clash at Demonhead
Answer: Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World
Otherwise known as TCAD, The Clash at Demonhead are named after a retro video game and are fronted by Envy, Scott Pilgrim's ex. Their bassist also happens to be Todd, one of Ramona Flowers' evil exes whom Scott must fight (he's the third ex). Todd is arrested by the Vegan Police for drinking half-and-half, and they confiscate his Vegan Powers. The band then split up.
Canadian indie band Metric composed the music played by TCAD in the film, including 'Black Sheep'. Envy is apparently based on Metric singer Emily Haines, and is played by Brie Larson, although Haines herself sings 'Black Sheep' on the OST album.
5. Weird Sisters
Answer: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
The Weird Sisters played at the Hogwarts 1994 Yule Ball. Their greatest hits include 'Do The Hippogriff' and according to creator JK Rowling, Harry Potter is a huge fan. The members in the film were singer Myron Wagtail (Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, who also wrote the songs); guitarists Kirley Duke (Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood); and Heathcote Barbary (Jason Buckle of Sheffield band The All Seeing I); bassist Donaghan Tremlett (Pulp bassist Steve Mackey); keyboardist and bagpipe player Gideon Crumb (Steven Claydon of Add N To X); and drummer Orsino Thruston (Radiohead drummer Phil Selway). Franz Ferdinand were initially approached to play the band.
Another real life musician, Ian Brown - the former singer of Manchester band the Stone Roses - also has a cameo in 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban', as a wizard reading 'A Brief History of Time'.
6. Autobahn
Answer: The Big Lebowski
Autobahn are a German techno-pop band consisting of Uli Kunkel (Peter Stormare), Franz (Torsten Voges) and Kieffer (Red Hot Chilli Peppers bassist Flea). They are also responsible for trying to extract money from the Dude, who they believe is the millionaire Jeffrey Lebowski, and end up getting beaten up by Walter Sobchak.
As their name suggests, they are a parody of Kraftwerk; the cover of their album 'Nagelbett', which translates to 'Bed of Nails', is a spoof of the 'Man Machine' cover. (Jeffrey Lebowski's daughter Maude is a fan.) They are nihilists, and the phrase 'we believe in nothing' is repeated throughout one of their songs, 'We Believe', written by Carter Burwell (who also wrote a good part of the soundtrack).
7. Wylde Rattz
Answer: Velvet Goldmine
Like the Weird Sisters, Wylde Rattz are made up of real life musicians. They were played by Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, Minutemen bassist Mike Watt, Gumball singer Don Fleming, Mudhoney singer Mark Arm, and Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton. The soundtrack features their cover of the Stooges' 'TV Eye', with Ewan McGregor (who plays Curt Wild) on lead vocals.
The film also features another band, Venus In Furs, named after the Velvet Underground song and based on the Spiders from Mars, with Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) as their David Bowie. The other members are played by Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, singer and lead guitarist of Radiohead respectively; Suede guitarist Bernard Butler; Andy McKay of Roxy Music; and Clune, who played drums with David Gray. Yorke sings on covers of Roxy Music's '2HB', 'Ladytron' and 'Bitter-Sweet', while Meyers sings on covers of Cockney Rebel's 'Tumbling Down' and Brian Eno's 'Baby's On Fire'.
All three members of Placebo - whose cover of '20th Century Boy' - appears on the soundtrack - appear in the film as well, with singer Brian Molko and drummer Steve Hewitt playing members of the Flaming Creatures, and bassist Stefan Olsdal as a member of Polly Small.
8. The New Main Street Singers
Answer: A Mighty Wind
Imagine 'Spinal Tap', but with folk musicians, and you have 'A Mighty Wind'. The New Main Street Singers are one of the three main bands featuring in the film, along with the Folksmen (Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer, who all played Spinal Tap) and folk duo Mitch & Mickey (Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara).
They are actually the second generation of the original band, and wear colour-coordinated yellow and blue outfits. Key members are Laurie (Jane Lynch) and Terry Bohner (John Michael Higgins), and Sissy Knox (Parker Posey), the daughter of one of the original members.
They sing in nine-part harmonies, and the Bohners are members of a cult called Witches in Nature's Colours, who believe in the power of colour. Their manager (Fred Willard), is the former star of a failed sitcom, 'Wha' Happened?', and wants to start a Monkees-esque sitcom about the band.
9. Hong Kong Cavaliers
Answer: The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension
'Buckaroo Banzai' is a cult film, starring Peter Weller as the genius pilot, scientist and musician of the same name. The Hong Kong Cavaliers are playing in a club when Banzai stops the performance to address a suicidal woman in the crowd, and he and the band end up getting sucked into a galactic war between the Black and Red Lectroids, a race of aliens from Planet 10.
They're a Huey Lewis and the News-esque '80s pop band whose line-up includes two sax players, and their guitarist is played by Billy Vera of Billy Vera and the Beaters. According to the DVD, their discography includes 'Your Place or Mayan?' and 'Live at Artie's Artery'.
10. Captain Clegg & the Night Creatures
Answer: Halloween II
Captain Clegg & the Night Creatures are a psychobilly band who feature in the Rob Zombie directed sequel to the 2007 'Halloween' remake. Captain Clegg is played by Jesse Dayton, a longtime collaborator with Rob Zombie who has written soundtracks for several of his films, 'Halloween II' included.
In 2009, Dayton released the album 'Rob Zombie Presents: Captain Clegg and the Night Creatures', which featured 'Halloween Honky Tonk' from the film. Dayton said that he and Rob Zombie had 'built a whole alter-ego around this character'.
