Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The movie "Field of Dreams" is based on a 1982 book by American author W. P. Kinsella. What is the name of the novel?

Answer: Shoeless Joe

Originally titled "Dream Field" by the author, the publisher changed it to "Shoeless Joe" to give a more 'personal' touch. If you enjoyed the film you will most likely enjoy the book as well.
2. As Kevin Costner narrates us through Ray Kinsella's early life, we learn that Ray went to Cal-Berkley and majored in English. What did Ray TRY to like while he was there?

Answer: Sitar music

During the psychedelic era of the late 1960s, this Indian stringed instrument had a brief run of popularity in Western music. Speaking as a 'child of the '60s myself, I'm with Ray on this; just never GOT the sitar.

I couldn't resist the opportunity to use "the writings of Susan Sontag" as a choice. Do you know what other baseball movie this line pays homage to?
3. At the farm supply store, Ray asks one of the old-timers if he ever hears voices while working in the field. After getting strange looks from everyone in the store, Ray quickly changes his story... NOISES, not VOICES. Name the common lubricant Ray plans to use on his tractor to quiet these noises.

Answer: Three-In-One

Not as common as it once was, just about every house in America used to have a little can of 'Three-in-One' oil stashed somewhere. A great touch in the background of this scene; the radio is playing Pasty Cline singing "Crazy". (Of course you all know Willie Nelson wrote that country classic.) It won't be long now before most everyone in the county thinks Ray is crazy.
4. Clearly identifiable by its trademark color, what is the make of the tractor Ray uses to plow under the corn in preparation for building the field?

Answer: John Deere

Even if you didn't know that John Deere tractors are always green and yellow, the name and model number are plainly visible. I decided it was way too obscure to ask anybody the model number.
5. Ray enjoys reciting Shoeless Joe stories to both Annie and Karin as the building project is underway. According to Ray, which hall-of-fame slugger copied Joe's swing?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Annie is trying to sleep when Ray asks her "Did you know that Babe Ruth copied his swing?" Annie's quiet response is "If I DID know, I'd forgotten." Ruth was a young pitcher with the Boston Red Sox when Joe was in his prime, and is said to have used Jackson's swing as a model when he made the transition to an 'every-day' player.
6. According to the rants of the "Nazi Cow" woman at the PTA meeting, why has Terrence Mann stopped writing?

Answer: He masturbates.

If you've only seen the film on network TV, you might have missed this shocking statement. Some broadcast versions edit out this exchange.
7. First baseman Chick Gandil brags to Ray about what great shape he's in. His old uniform still fits, and he hasn't done 'something' in 18 years. What bad habit has Chick given up?

Answer: Smoking cigarettes

Chick explains that he died in 1970, so he hasn't had a cigarette 18 years (the film is based in 1988). I suppose he hasn't done any of the others things for 18 years either, but he only mentions the cigarettes; and then he asks Ray for a smoke.
8. The soundtrack provides a rare treat while Ray drives to Boston; a lengthy instrumental from the Allman Brothers Band. Name the song.

Answer: Jessica

Composed by Dickey Betts and Les Dudek, the song is from the Allman's 1973 album "Brothers and Sisters". Break out the vinyl, folks, it's worth a listen. Whoever selected the music for this film must have had a 'brother' fixation. When Ray and Terry travel from Boston to Minnesota, we get an earful of the Doobie Brothers' "China Grove".
9. While Ray is trying to "kidnap" Terrence to the baseball game, what does Mann pick up and threaten to hit Ray with?

Answer: Crowbar

Mann tells Ray he is "going to beat you with this crowbar 'till you go away"; but relents after Ray reminds Mann that he is a pacifist.
10. On their visit to Chisholm Minnesota, Ray and Terry seem to have 'struck out' in their quest to find Moonlight Graham. Ray goes out for a late-night walk, and soon discovers himself transported back in time. Several clues alert Ray to the 16 year time-warp; among them, a campaign poster asking voters to re-elect which U.S. President?

Answer: Richard Nixon

The other clues include a cinema marquee advertising "The Godfather" and the date on an automobile's license plate. Richard Nixon trounced George McGovern in the 1972 presidential election; but as we found out later, he cheated.
11. As they walk to the good doctor's office, Doc Graham gives Ray a detailed account of his lone big league appearance. Name the Hall-of-Fame manager who pointed his "bony finger" at the youngster and said "right field."

Answer: John McGraw

John McGraw managed the New York Giants from 1902-1932. He would have been Moonlight's manager in 1905 (when Graham REALLY played) or in 1921 (when the movie SAYS he played). I don't know if McGraw really had 'bony' fingers, but that's how Doc Graham describes them.
12. Annie's brother Mark doesn't believe in the dream and, therefore can't see the ball players. He does, however see Terry Mann, but refuses to believe he is who Ray says he is. With a mocking smirk, Mark introduces himself to Terry as who?

Answer: The Easter Bunny

Mark (looking at Terry) says to Ray, "Who's this, Elvis?" then introduces himself as the Easter Bunny. Mel Ott is one of the players Archie recognizes on the field. In the book version, Terry Mann's character is J. D. Salinger, the reclusive author of "Catcher in the Rye". The movie producers took Salinger's name out of the script over fear of legal action.
13. When Archie finally gets to bat, there are runners on base. Where are the runners?

Answer: First and Third

The previous batter tries to move a runner from second to third with a sacrifice bunt. Rather than taking the sure out at first, the pitcher tries to get the lead man at third, but the runner is called "safe". This brings Archie to the plate with runners on the corners.
14. After the pitcher ("Knuckles" Cicote) knocks Archie down with two consecutive pitches, Archie asks the umpire to issue a warning. What's the umpire's response?

Answer: (to Archie) "Watch out you don't get killed."

The umpire's warning is classic baseball, as is Joe's advice: "He's not gonna want to walk ya and load the bases, so look for 'low and away' (pause) but watch out for 'in your ear'."

Interesting side note, since Archie's turn at the plate results in a sacrifice fly, his stats would still not reflect an official time 'at bat'.
15. Of the three instructions Ray receives from 'the voice', "Ease his pain" is certainly the most cryptic. Ultimately, whose pain needed to be eased?

Answer: Ray

Ray doesn't understand this until Joe tells him near the end of the film: "No, Ray... it was you." Throughout the story, Ray risks EVERYTHING to help others achieve or re-discover THEIR dream. At the end of the day, it was HIS pain (the result of a fractured relationship between Ray and his father) that needed easing.
