Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The city of Tataouine was made famous upon the release of "A New Hope"; its name became the basis for Luke Skywalker's home planet, Tatooine. In what country would you find it?

Answer: Tunisia

It's hard to resist a "Star Wars" filming location quiz without giving a bit of info about where it all seemed to begin. Tatooine is a desert planet heavily featured in "A New Hope" and "The Phantom Menace". The home of Anakin and Luke Skywalker and the site of a pretty thorough podrace in "The Phantom Menace", Tatooine is home to nomads, raiders, and scavengers. Scenes for this planet were originally filmed in Southern Tunisia back in 1977 in the city of Tatouine, a region known for its unique Berber settlements, and the area was reused for the prequel trilogy.
2. The Jawas and Tusken Raiders of Tatooine filmed a number of scenes in Death Valley. It was also used for establishing shots of whose palace in "Return of the Jedi"?

Answer: Jabba the Hutt

While Tunisia was used for a number of important early scenes in "A New Hope" and portions of "Return of the Jedi", there was a certain practicality to filming in the U.S.' hottest locale-- Death Valley-- for parts of the films. Besides scenes set outside of Mos Eisley in "A New Hope", Death Valley was used in supporting shots, especially those featuring the raider canyons and C3P0 and R2D2's crash landing and sandcrawler sequences.

This is, of course, ideal since Tatooine is a relatively arid planet.

The scenes heading into Jabba's Palace were filmed at Twenty-Mule Team Canyon while the interior was filmed on a constructed set.
3. Norwegian glacier Hardangerjøkulen subbed in for what icy planet featured in an immense battle in "The Empire Strikes Back"?

Answer: Hoth

A secret base for the Rebel Alliance (of which Luke and Leia were a part), Hoth was considered by many too foreboding and chilly to be used for most purposes and that made it an ideal hiding spot while plans were formed to oppose the Empire. The movie ended up featuring a large-scale battle between the two sides in one of its major set-pieces. Exterior shots were filmed on Norway's sixth-largest glacier, Hardangerjøkulen, near the village of Finse in the country's highest reaches.

The battles were filmed using miniatures.
4. Humboldt State Park's redwood forest was used for the lush, verdant home of the Ewoks in "Return of the Jedi", known by what name in the film?

Answer: Endor

The coastal redwoods found in Del Norte County, California created the otherworldly forests of Endor in "Return of the Jedi", and while some scenes were shot across the Redwood National and State Parks, the majority of scenes involving the Ewoks and the stormtrooper battles of the film were completed in Humboldt Redwoods State Park, the largest of them.

In the film, Endor is the moon around which Darth Vader's second Death Star orbits, and the film ends with the Rebel Alliance winning here and bringing it down.

The planet it orbits, also known as Endor, is an uninhabitable gas giant.
5. Home of the Wookiees, what planet was constructed from establishing shots of karst mountains from Guilin, China and Phuket, Thailand?

Answer: Kashyyyk

While Kashyyyk was only slated to appear in the ill-fated "Star Wars Holiday Special", it ended up making a reappearance in the canon in "Revenge of the Sith", introducing Chewbacca into the legacy (before he would feature heavily in the original trilogy).

While Guilin was used for establishing shots of the region because of its similar landscape, the bulk of the Kashyyyk shoots were done in Phang Nga Bay, Thailand. The planet features prominently in the Expanded Universe because of the role the Wookiees play caught up in between the Rebels and the Empire.
6. Did Padme and Anakin have an Italian wedding? Well, kind of. Scenes from the end of "Attack of the Clones" saw the two in Northern Italy, but on what planet were they married in the film?

Answer: Naboo

During "Attack of the Clones", Naboo scenes were filmed at the Villa del Balbianello in Lenno, Italy, close to the city of Como near the Swiss border. It provided a stunning backdrop for the planet which, in "The Phantom Menace", already established both the royal city of Theed and the Gungan homeland.

It features in the final scenes of "Episode 2" in a notable sequence; as the remaining Jedi note the start of the Clone Wars, Anakin and Padme elope on Naboo, marrying in a ceremony that goes against Anakin's Jedi training and continuing his spiral into evil.
7. Shots taken at an erupting Mount Etna were later used in scenes on what planet, the site of a major lightsaber duel?

Answer: Mustafar

Featured in the latter half of "Revenge of the Sith", Mustafar was the planet where Anakin and Obi-Wan faced off in a lightsaber duel that left Anakin without his limbs. Although this volcanic planet was used as an Empire base and the home of Darth Vader for a short time, it seemed to be nearly inhospitable otherwise due to its geology. To get this visual atmosphere, filmmakers headed to Mount Etna in Sicily during its eruption in 2002 and composited their shots into the final piece.
8. The island of Skellig Michael was renamed Ahch-To in "The Force Awakens" and turned out to be the home of what character?

Answer: Luke Skywalker

Seen in the closing scenes of "The Force Awakens" and a number of others in "The Last Jedi", Ahch-To was the place of self-exile for Luke Skywalker who sought it out looking for the First Temple. In reality, his island home is the Irish Skellig Michael in County Kerry which, in 1996, became a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its cultural and religious significance.

The island sits twelve kilometers off Ireland's southwest coast in the Atlantic and is meant to represent only one of the many small islands on Ahch-To which, from space, actually looks to be a water planet like Kamino.
9. Scenes on which planet were filmed in the Middle Eastern Rub' al Khali Desert?

Answer: Jakku

Featured in "The Force Awakens", the planet of Jakku is the home of Rey, who was left there in the harsh and desolate landscape as a child. Evidently, Jakku was once a vital planet teeming with forests. It was also the site of the last major battle between the Rebels and the Empire following "Return of the Jedi".

The setting somewhat mirrors Tatooine in this way since it, also a desert planet, was the home of Luke Skywalker. Scenes set on Jakku were filmed in the United Arab Emirates near Abu Dhabi; the Rub' al Khali Desert there, expansive and hot, was not unlike the Sahara used in "A New Hope".
10. The Laamu Atoll was used as the filming location for the Planet Scarif in what "Star Wars" film?

Answer: Rogue One

The planet of Scarif was covertly used for many years as the think-tank for the construction of the Death Star, and the events of "Rogue One" led into "A New Hope" in a surprisingly unique way, feeding into the narrative at the start of the film where Princess Leia was captured by Darth Vader.

The base on Scarif is main location for the final act of the film in which Rogue One must infiltrate the compound and steal the plans. Many outdoor scenes on Scarif were actually filmed in the Maldives on the island of Gan, a part of the Laamu Atoll.

Indoor scenes were filmed in the UK.
