Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following people was NOT credited as one of the scriptwriters for Episode VII, "The Force Awakens"?

Answer: George Lucas

Although Disney executives decided to buy Lucas' treatments for each of the sequel films when they acquired Lucasfilm, they stated that they had ultimately decided to discard them and "start from scratch." Lucas has been public about his feelings of disappointment and betrayal at this decision, although he has been retained by Disney as a "creative consultant" who provided advice about continuity in the "Star Wars" universe. Michael Arndt (also known for writing "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Toy Story 3") wrote the first screenplay for Episode VII but was unable to complete it in time, so JJ Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan took over and produced the final draft. Abrams has made many films, such as "Star Trek" among others; Kasdan is a "Star Wars" veteran, having co-written "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi".
2. When "The Force Awakens" begins, the Galaxy is ruled mainly by the New Republic, a restored version of the previous Galactic Republic that was overthrown by Palpatine. What planet is the New Republic's capital?

Answer: Hosnian Prime

Hosnian Prime is mentioned in "The Force Awakens" during a scene in which Admiral Hux gives a speech denouncing the New Republic as "illegitimate", just prior to using the Starkiller Base to destroy the inhabited planets in the Hosnian system, along with the New Republic Defense Fleet. Although Coruscant was the capital of both the old Republic and the Empire, a decision is made to move the capital elsewhere.

Despite the Galactic Empire having been defeated 30 years before the beginning of "The Force Awakens", and a New Republic established, Imperial loyalists have regrouped as the First Order.

In the first film of the trilogy, the First Order uses its Starkiller Base, a new, improved version of the Death Star from the original trilogy, to destroy Hosnian Prime and the New Republic is disbanded.
3. At the beginning of "The Force Awakens", Resistance pilot Poe Dameron receives something vitally important that Kylo Ren and the stormtroopers are desperate to retrieve. What is it?

Answer: A map to Luke Skywalker's location

Poe Dameron is captured and tortured by Kylo Ren, but he no longer has the map, which he gave to BB-8 for safe keeping. It turns out that the map is incomplete, but the missing information needed to locate Luke Skywalker is eventually found stored in R2-D2.

The theme of a hunt for vitally important information stored within a droid has obvious parallels with the famous plot device in "A New Hope", in which stolen plans to the Death Star are hidden in R2-D2 and desperately sought after by the Empire.

This is only one of many parallels between the sequels and the original trilogy.
4. In "The Force Awakens", after touching Luke's lightsaber, Rey has a series of visions that disturb her. Who then explains to her that she is a force sensitive and encourages her take the lightsaber?

Answer: Maz Kanata

Maz Kanata lives in an ancient castle on the planet Takodana, and provides refuge for travelling smugglers. Rey is introduced to her by Han Solo, who is an old friend. She is also a force sensitive and encourages Rey to embrace her newfound powers. However, Rey initially refuses to accept the lightsaber as she found her experience confusing and frightening. Maz gives the lightsaber to Finn for safekeeping.
5. Who directed "The Last Jedi"?

Answer: Rian Johnson

Lucasfilm originally asked JJ Abrams to direct all three films in the trilogy, but Abrams was unwilling to commit to such a long-term project. Lucasfilm then decided that each film would have a different director, and the plan was that Abrams would direct Episode VII, Johnson would direct Episode VIII, and Episode IX would be directed by Colin Trevorrow.

However, Trevorrow withdrew in September 2017 after creative differences with Lucasfilm, and Abrams ended up directing both Episode VII and IX, and was the executive producer for Episode VIII. Rian Johnson, in addition to directing, also wrote the script for "The Last Jedi" and stated that it was "the most fun I've ever had writing." Johnson has also written and directed several other films, including "Brick" (2005), "The Brothers Bloom" (2008), "Looper" (2012), and "Knives Out" (2019).
6. In "The Last Jedi", Luke Skywalker reluctantly agrees to train Rey in the ways of the force. According to Luke, what prompted Kylo to destroy the new Jedi order?

Answer: Luke had contemplated killing him.

Luke admitted that when he found out that Kylo had been corrupted by Snoke, he briefly contemplated killing Kylo. Although he quickly rejected this plan, Kylo sensed his intention and retaliated by killing the Jedi that Luke had trained.
7. In "The Last Jedi", what happens when Snoke orders Kylo to kill Rey?

Answer: Kylo kills Snoke instead.

Rey allows herself to be captured and taken aboard Snoke's command ship in the hope that she can turn Kylo away from the dark side. Snoke explains that he created the mental connection between Rey and Ren as part of a plan to find and destroy Luke Skywalker.

When he orders Ren to kill Rey, Ren assassinates his master instead and he and Rey join forces to fight Snoke's guards. In Episode IX, it is revealed that Kylo slaying Snoke was actually part of Palpatine's master plan, as it was a test that he had to pass to become heir to the New Empire.
8. What is the name of the Sith home world where Palpatine is based?

Answer: Exegol

In "The Rise of Skywalker", Kylo is searching for Palpatine's location and uncovers a Sith Wayfinder that leads him to Exegol, a planet in the Unknown Regions. When Kylo, and later Rey, confront Palpatine on Exegol, he is attended by hooded figures who tend the machinery to which he is attached. According to "The Rise of Skywalker - Visual Dictionary", these are members of a secret cult based on the planet Exegol called Sith Eternal, who have existed throughout Galactic history, and who helped Palpatine return from the dead.

After the fall of the Empire, they spent decades secretly building a vast Star Fleet to restore the Empire. They also considered Kylo Ren, as Darth Vader's grandson, the heir to the Sith order. They were also instrumental in helping Palpatine to create Snoke for the purpose of training Kylo in the ways of the dark side.
9. While on the planet Pasaana in Episode IX, Rey and company find a dagger with a Sith inscription containing information they need to locate Palpatine. However, C-3PO, despite being fluent in more than six million forms of communication, is unable to translate. Why?

Answer: His programming forbids him to translate Sith artefacts.

Rey's associates find someone who can hack C-3PO's programming so that he can translate the inscription. However, this will result in a complete erasure of his memory. Rey and friends are reluctant to do this to C-3PO, who is like a friend to them, but he volunteers to undergo the process and is able to give them the information they need. Poor old C-3PO previously underwent a memory wipe in Episode III, "Revenge of the Sith".

However, in this Episode, he is able to have most of his memory restored from a backup held by R2-D2.
10. In "The Rise of Skywalker", Rey finally learns the truth about her origins. She is in fact what?

Answer: Palpatine's granddaughter

Rey first learns this from Kylo. During the film's climax when Rey is confronting Palpatine, he reveals that his plan is to provoke her into killing him so that he can transfer his spirit into her and take control of her body. Rey defeats Palpatine with some spiritual support from the late Jedi masters, dies, and then is resurrected by Kylo, who then dies. One of the themes of the movie seems to be that bloodline does not determine one's destiny.
