Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (2001) Eddie and Gwen were lovers, both on and off the silver screen, and their public just ate it up. When Gwen's affair led to a messy divorce, Eddie had a bit of a nervous breakdown. Publicist Lee Phillips had to get Eddie and Gwen back together one more time, to attend the press junket for the last film that they made. What was the name of this very funny film?

Answer: America's Sweethearts

John Cusack, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Billy Crystal, Julia Roberts and Hank Azaria starred in this very funny film, directed by Joe Roth. Christopher Walken's contribution, as the eccentric film director holding the finished work hostage, was nothing short of brilliant.
2. (1991) The trials and tribulations of filming a successful soap opera were examined in Michael Hoffman's hilarious film. The show's star, played by Sally Field, had her hands full, fighting off a plot to push her off the show. However the return of an old lover to the show brought a whole new set of issues, as she tried to keep him from romancing their daughter, without having to tell him that he was the girl's father. What was the name of this very funny film?

Answer: Soapdish

The ensemble cast of this well scripted film included, Sally Field, Kevin Kline, Robert Downey Junior, Cathy Moriarty, Garry Marshall, Elizabeth Shue and Whoopi Goldberg.
Playing the writer for the show, Goldberg was given the task of reintroducing Kline's character. She had a very funny speech wherein she pointed out how difficult this would be, since he had been written out of the show by being decapitated.
3. (2002) "Death to Smoochy" told the story of dethroned children's show host, Randolph Smiley, who was fired for taking money to put kids in front of the camera. He was replaced by a squeaky clean rhinoceros named Smoochy, and spent the rest of the movie trying to discredit him. Who played 'Rainbow' Randolph Smiley?

Answer: Robin Williams

Ed Norton was also very funny as the well-meaning, but very naïve Smoochy. Williams was at his manic best in "Death to Smoochy", concocting many bizarre plans, and willing to stoop to any level to get his show back. While definitely at his best in comedic roles, Williams has also been very believable in much darker roles, such as in "Insomnia", where he played a murderer, and "One Hour Photo", where his obsession with a family was truly frightening.
4. (2005) In an effort to revive a flagging career, Jack Wyatt decided to remake the television series "Bewitched". Since he wanted the show to be predominantly about himself, he decided to hire a virtual unknown for the part of Samantha. Charmed by the way she could wiggle her nose, he unknowingly cast a real witch in the role. Which actress played the role of the witch, who was playing the role of a witch?

Answer: Nicole Kidman

With stars like Kidman, Michael Caine and Shirley McLaine, this should have been a terrific movie. However too much of the plot focused on Will Ferrell, who approached the role with his typical lack of finesse. Somebody needs to tell him that his childish temper tantrums and jumping up and down with glee get old pretty quickly.
Kidman has previously played a witch in Griffin Dune's excellent "Practical Magic".
5. (1988) This interesting mixture of animation and real life action presented a world where cartoon stars, known as Toons, didn't simply exist on film. Once drawn, they continued to exist, acting in other films, and living side by side with their human co-stars (well almost side by side, they did have their own part of town). This co-existence was not always peaceful, and someone was out to get rid of as many Toons as possible. Finding himself set up for a murder he didn't commit, one brave Toon turned to a human detective for help. What was the name of this strange, but funny film?

Answer: Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Bob Hoskins, Christopher Lloyd, Joanna Cassidy, Charles Fleischer and Kathleen Turner starred under Robert Zemeckis' direction. Turner got to deliver the immortal line, "I'm not bad...I'm just drawn that way."
6. (1994) Loosely based on a real story from the 50s, "Quiz Show" told the tale of a game show "Twenty One", a show that tested the general knowledge of its contestants...or at least it would have done if the show hadn't been fixed. All was going according to plan, until an ambitious lawyer got wind of the fix, and the show found itself being investigated by a Congressional subcommittee. Which Hollywood hunk, also known for hosting his own film festival, directed this film?

Answer: Robert Redford

Robert Redford has had a long and successful acting career. He also founded The Sundance Film Festival, an annual event that encourages young filmmakers.
"Quiz Show" was a masterpiece that starred John Turturro, Rob Morrow, and Ralph Fiennes.
7. (1982) Dustin Hoffman played an intense young actor who landed a female lead in a popular soap opera, just to prove that he could. Once established, he found himself falling in love with the female lead, who was confused about her feelings for her...er...him! To further complicate things, Hoffman received a proposal of marriage from the father of the woman that he loved. What was the name of this very funny movie?

Answer: Tootsie

Directed by Sydney Pollack, "Tootsie" was nominated for ten Academy Awards, but only won one, which went to Jessica Lange for Best Actress in a supporting cast. Also adding their considerable talents to the film were Teri Garr, Dabney Coleman, Geena Davis, Bill Murray and Charles Durning.
8. (2002) In "Showtime" two cops were forced to work together in a reality-type television program. One of the partners, played by Eddie Murphy, was anxious to become an actor, and jumped into the project with great enthusiasm. The second cop just wanted to be a cop, and was only there as a disciplinary action, because he shot the camera out of the hands of a newscaster who was intruding on his partner's pain. Who played the reluctant cop?

Answer: Robert De Niro

Eddie Murphy was at his obnoxious best, under Tom Dey's direction. Renee Russo, and William Shatner also starred. De Niro's character's anger was intensified by the fact that his original partner only got hurt because of a mistake that Murphy's character made. The animosity between these two made this movie worth watching.
9. (1980) This strange film was one wherein the reality of the story often crossed lines with the fantasy of making a movie. A man, Cameron, who was running from the law, took a position as a stunt man on a film set, replacing the former stunt man, who drowned on the set. As events unfolded, he began to fear that he was headed for the same fate as his predecessor. The fact that he had fallen in love with the film's female star was just another complication. What was the name of this movie?

Answer: The Stunt Man

Richard Rush directed this interesting film that starred Peter O'Toole, Steve Railsback and Barabara Hersey.
O'Toole's performance as the overly intense director, who was willing to sacrifice anything, perhaps even his cast, in order to create his film, was amazing.
10. (1996) This movie told the story of a female news reporter, determined to be the best in the field, being mentored by her boss. Together they established her reputation and career, managing to fall in love along the way. All went well, until he got tired of staying in the background, and decided to take another crack in front of the cameras on a very dangerous assignment. Then she was given the almost impossible task of reporting on his death. What was the name of this very poignant film?

Answer: Up Close and Personal

Robert Redford and Michelle Pfeiffer played the ill-fated lovers in this very powerful film, under Jon Avnet's direction. Stockard Channing, Joe Mantegna and Kate Nelligan also starred.
