Dory's story began one year after "Finding Nemo". As a young fish, Dory used to speak to a friend through the pipes in the Open Ocean exhibit. This is how she learned to speak whale. When she went to the Marine Life Center, she met Destiny, who identified herself as Dory's "pipe friend". Destiny was voiced by Kaitlin Olsen.

Nemo and Marlin were trapped inside the truck that was taking animals to Cleveland. They were trapped in the blue tang tank and Dory had to rescue them with the help of her friends from the Marine Life Center. She was able to get them and the other fish along with the truck into the ocean.

Dory's parents were trying to teach her how dangerous the undertow was and that she should never get close to it. Dory accidentally got too close to the undertow and it sucked her into the ocean and this is how she became lost.

Dory heard Sigourney Weaver's voice through the speakers when she first found the Marine Life Center. Several times Dory referred to Sigourney Weaver as her friend. After losing Marlin and Nemo, Dory found the Marine Life Center again by hearing Sigourney Weaver's voice.

Dory's parents laid out shells in different directions that all led back to her house so she could follow them and find her way home. When Dory left the exhibit and went back to the ocean, she followed the shells and found the home her parents had made in hopes she would find them again.

Dory remembered that she lived in California. Marlin used Crush to help them get to California to help Dory find her family. When Dory was a child she and her parents lived in the Open Ocean exhibit at Marine Life Institute in Morro Bay, California.

Hank used a child's stroller with Dory in a sippy cup to take him and Dory to the Open Ocean Exhibit. After Dory got them out of the touch tank at the kids zone, Hank was able to get Dory into the Open Ocean exhibit. Unfortunately, her parents moved after she disappeared.

As they were enjoying their freedom, the boat from Marine Life Center picked them up and took them to quarantine.
