Will Sampson stood 6'5" tall and had significant movie roles in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975), "Poltergeist II: The Other Side" (1986) and "The Outlaw Josey Wales" (1976). He passed away in 1987 at age 53 from complications of surgery.

Fish Hawk mentions this to Corby Boggs, the farm boy. Sampson was actually from the Creek Nation of Native Americans and was born in Oklahoma in 1933. He is buried there on the Creek reservation.

Charlie (Geoffrey Bowes) is intellectually challenged. He thinks bottles are "magic" and enjoys looking at the world through their colored glass. He is always looking out for bottles to add to his collection which he carries around with him in a burlap bag.

A large grizzly bear had been rampaging over the countryside and killing cattle. Fish Hawk is promised the bear fat, hide, $10 and a gallon of whiskey if he dispatches the beast.

In one scene the bear and boar fight each other with no clear victor. However, when Fish Hawk kills the bear, the people that process the carcass find a tusk of the boar imbedded in the bear's jaw. Fish Hawks also hunts the boar, but when he finds it, he doesn't kill it because he discovers that the boar is blind and will die anyway when winter comes.

While hunting the grizzly bear with his dog, Ebo, Fish Hawk shoots the bear which falls and crushes his beloved pet. He blames his drinking on this mishap thinking if he wasn't so hung over, he might have been more careful when shooting. After this, he never drinks in the movie again, even when offered free whiskey.

Fish Hawk is a widower. He says that his father was shot by white soldiers, but his wife and son died from smallpox.

Corby (Charles Fields) is impressed with the necklace and wants to give Fish Hawk a special gift in return. He saves money to buy a copy of "The Last of the Mohicans". Fish Hawk seems to enjoy the book and reads it to Corby and sometimes Towsack Charlie.

Fish Hawk is seen playing the harmonica in one scene, but Boggs (Don Francks) is seen in several scenes playing the autoharp. In real life, Francks is an accomplished musician and plays the trombone, flute and drums in various jazz clubs.

However, he moves away much to the sadness of Corby and some of the townspeople. Fish Hawk feels he must "find his people". There are several deaths in the movie, but mostly animals - Fish Hawk's dog, Corby's dog, a puma cub, a farm calf and the grizzly bear.

There's one human death - Towsack Charlie who is attacked by the wild boar. At the end, in a short character narration, Corby says that years after Fish Hawk left, he heard of his death.
