Question 1 of 10
1. 2002. Gaspar Noe's "Irreversible" would not strictly fall under the heading "horror". However I include it here because it contains two horrifically unsettling scenes that would rival any horror that you could think of. The film's events are shown in reverse. Which effect was used in an attempt to make the viewer feel uneasy? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. 2004. Pascal Laugier is quickly becoming a name synonymous with the French horror genre. His feature length debut was originally given the title "Saint Ange". It concerns a young woman who has been tasked with cleaning up an abandoned orphanage who begins to hear strange noises and the sounds of children talking, leading her to believe that the house is haunted. What was the English language title it was given upon its international release? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. 2006. "Ils" (released in the UK as "Them") is a French/Romanian movie centering on Lucas and Clementine, a French couple who have recently moved to a remote house in the Romanian countryside. They realise just how remote the house is when their peaceful life is shattered one night when their house is invaded by a gang of hooded thugs. The thugs are identified as a group of 10-15 year old children who are arrested at the end of the movie. What reason do they give for terrorising the couple that highlights their young age? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. 2007. The streets of Paris are mobbed with rioters following a particularly unpopular political election. A group of young thieves cash in on the madness by pulling off a lucrative heist, which goes awry when one of their number is badly injured and they gun down a policeman. They flee the city, taking refuge in a countryside inn that, unfortunately for them, is owned by a family of Neo-Nazi murderous psychopaths. What is the title of this movie? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. 2007. If you fancy watching something extremely disturbing then "Inside" is the film for you. The film follows a seriously deranged woman who infiltrates the house of the heavily pregnant Sara. Sara is due to have her baby delivered the following morning but it is going to be a long night as it quickly becomes clear that the mysterious intruder intends to steal the unborn child by any means necessary. Which two actresses were lauded for their performances in the starring roles? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. 2008. Pascal Laugier returned with a film that almost rivalled "Inside" for its disturbing content. Laugier's second feature tells the story of a girl called Lucie and her friend, who pay a visit to a family that Lucie believes were responsible for kidnapping and torturing her when she was a child. What follows is a completely mental hour and a half of murders, suicide, buckets and buckets of blood and a secret society carrying out human experiments to unlock the secret of the afterlife. What is the name of this controversial movie? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. 2009. Next up we head to a derelict apartment block where a group of police officers have infiltrated the hideout of a criminal gang intent on getting revenge for their murdered brother. However, the good guys are forced to team up with the bad guys when out of nowhere the zombie apocalypse rains down upon them. What is the title of this movie? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. 2009. "5150 Rue Des Ormes" (released in the UK as "5150 Elms Way") is an excellent Canadian, French language psychological thriller. Beaulieu tells him that the only way he will ever be allowed to go free is if Yannick manages to beat him at what game? Hint

9. 2010. Written by Patrick Senecal, who also brought us "5150 Elms Way", is a revenge thriller called "7 Days". After his daughter is brutally murdered, a father takes the law into his own hands by breaking the killer out of prison and taking him to a secluded holiday cabin where he subjects him to a period of sustained torture. The movie poses the age old moral question of "do two wrongs make a right"? Complete the tag-line for the movie: "Justice is blind. So is ______." Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Low frequency sound

For the first 30 minutes of the film there is an almost inaudible, low frequency background noise, which actually caused many people to walk out of the film. Low frequency sound can cause feelings of nausea, vertigo and fear in some people.
Although the film was hailed as a work of art by many, others viewed it as a disgrace. The critic Roger Ebert summed it up quite aptly when he wrote that "Irreversible" was "a movie so violent and cruel that most people will find it unwatchable".

Answer: House of Voices

The film starred Virginie Ledoyen, who had found international fame a few years earlier when cast alongside Leo Di Caprio in "The Beach".
"House of Voices" failed to excite the critics but it did pave the way for Pascal Laugier to move on to bigger and better things, which we will get to later.

Answer: "They wouldn't play with us."

"Ils" is credited by some as the first great film of the new wave of French extreme cinema. However, other critics could not disagree more. Bill White of "The Seattle Post" went so far as to describe it as "a gruellingly dull slog through basic horror movie conventions... should be dumped in the Seine". Personally, I have to agree with him. If you are a fan of horror there is nothing here that you probably haven't already seen before.

Answer: Frontier(s)

"Frontier(s)" was written and directed by Xavier Gens, who has gone on to direct the Hollywood movies "Hitman" and "The Divide".
The film received mainly positive reviews, with special praise directed at the female lead Karina Testa.

Answer: Beatrice Dalle and Alysson Paradis

Beatrice Dalle is a star of French cinema starring in many films including "Chimere" and "Trouble Every Day". Alysson Paradis is the younger sister of the singer Vanessa Paradis. "Inside" was an early role in her career which has blossomed somewhat since.
Despite the incredibly disturbing and gory nature of this movie, it was a real hit with fans and critics alike, owing largely to the cinematography and the acting, which is second to none. The result is a mind-blowingly tense movie that is not for the faint of heart.
Proceed with caution.

Answer: Martyrs

"Martyrs" has earned its place as one of the greats of the French horror genre. Laugier fought hard to find a studio brave enough to produce such a controversial movie and also to find actresses who would accept the roles of the two girls. He overcame the challenges and made a brilliant film that again is not for the faint of heart.

Answer: The Horde

Being the latest in a long line of zombie movies, "The Horde" failed to impress the critics due to its lack of originality and non-existent back story. However, it did win the Best Cinematography and Best Screenplay awards at the Fantasporto Film Festival.
8. 2009. "5150 Rue Des Ormes" (released in the UK as "5150 Elms Way") is an excellent Canadian, French language psychological thriller. The film's protagonist makes a grisly discovery at the house of the Beaulieu family and is subsequently kidnapped and locked up in a room by the man of the house, the deranged Jack Beaulieu. Beaulieu tells him that the only way he will ever be allowed to go free is if Yannick manages to beat him at what game?

Answer: Chess

Beaulieu is a self proclaimed master of chess and what follows is a seemingly endless run of defeats for Yannick, who had never played the game before. His obsession with getting out of the room leads him dangerously close to losing his mind as his burning desire to find a way to win consumes him.
"5150 Rue Des Ormes" received very positive reviews and won several awards at the Canadian film festivals that year, but due to its limited international release it has largely gone unnoticed around the world.
9. So is ______."

Answer: Vengeance

The film is notable for featuring absolutely no music throughout, not even during the end credits.
It was favourably received by the critics. To your average viewer, "7 Days" is probably an intense watch but if you have already watched "Inside" and "Martyrs", its attempts to shock and gross out the audience may fall a little flat.
10. 2011. Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury ("Inside") returned with the film "Livid", which follows young carer, Lucy, who takes a job looking after Mrs Jessel, a coma patient, who lives in a large, derelict house. Lucy learns that an unidentified treasure lies somewhere within the house and, along with some friends, decides to search for it. It emerges that Mrs Jessel was not living entirely alone when they stumble upon the body of Mrs Jessel's daughter, Anna. When it becomes clear that Anna is not exactly dead, what item which is readily available in France would have been of use to Lucy and her friends?

Answer: A necklace of garlic

It transpires that Mrs Jessel and her daughter are vampires. Garlic, which is a staple of the French diet, has long been believed to repel these creatures.
Whilst not comparable to the brilliance of their first feature, "Livid" was generally well received by the critics and the fans who had eagerly been waiting to see what Bustillo and Maury would come up with next. The directors explained that the film was a love-letter to their favourite Hammer Horror and Giallo style movies.
