Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What color (in every movie except two) is Godzilla's skin?

Answer: Charcoal

Contrary to popular belief, Godzilla's skin is indeed a dark, charcoal grey. It has only been green in two movies: "Godzilla 2000" and "Godzilla vs. Megaguirus". This misconception originally came from the fact that they accidentally used green ink on the posters for the first "Godzilla" movie in America, and since it was in black-and-white, nobody could tell his true color, and it's stuck ever since.
2. Who is Godzilla's arch enemy?

Answer: King Ghidorah

The flying, golden, triple-headed, lightning-spitting space dragon in question has proven himself to be one of the most popular kaiju of all time, ever since his debut film, "Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster". Even back then, he did battle with Godzilla. Besides Godzilla, Ghidorah's main adversary is the giant insect Mothra.
3. What is the name of the company that makes the "Godzilla" movies?

Answer: Toho

Toho was founded by Hankyu Railway in 1932, though under a different name back then. Kadokawa-Daiei is the name of the company that produces the "Gamera" films, and Tristar is usually the one that releases the "Godzilla" films in America.
4. Name each "Godzilla" series in order, beginning with the earliest and ending with the latest.

Answer: Showa, Heisei, and Millennium

The Showa series was named after the Japanese Showa era, which refers to the reign of the emperor Hirohito. Likewise, the Heisei series is named after the Japanese Heisei era, meaning the rule of the current emperor, Hirohito's son Akihito. The Millennium series, of course, is not named in such a manner, but for the fact that this series began near the beginning of the new millennium in 2001.
5. What three dinosaurs are Godzilla's design mainly based off of?

Answer: Tyrannosaurus rex, Stegosaurus, and Iguanodon

The most obvious of these is the Tyrannosaurus rex, in terms of the general body and head design. The Stegosaurus inspires the rows of fins down his back. The Iguanodon is probably the least noticeable; Godzilla, unlike Tyrannosaurus, has long, muscular arms with four fingers, just like Iguanodon.
6. In the Japanese version of "Godzilla 2000", what is Godzilla's distinctive regenerating ability labeled?

Answer: Organizer G-1

It is from the first four letters of this title that the monster Orga was named (though it is never spoken aloud in the film itself). Regenerator G-1 is what it has been changed to in the American version. The other two I made up.
7. Godzilla can fly.

Answer: True

This rather unconventional ability is only displayed once. In a rather infamous scene from "Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster", as Hedorah attempts to flee the battle by flying away.
8. In the original draft of the script, what three monsters were slated to appear alongside Godzilla in "Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack?"

Answer: Anguirus, Varan, and Baragon

Anguirus and Varan were originally intended to be in the film because they were both weaker than Godzilla, who was intended to be the most obviously powerful monster in the film. They were replaced with Mothra and King Ghidorah because they weren't considered popular enough to draw in a large audience.

This caused much confusion among American fans, because Anguirus was widely considered much more popular than Baragon there. When suit designer Fuyuki Shinada found out that Varan, his favorite monster, had been cut from the film, he incorporated some of Varan's facial features into Ghidorah's.
9. What is Godzilla's origin?

Answer: A Godzillasaurus mutated by H-bomb tests in the Pacific

This is seen explicitly in "Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah". The Xilians actually are a race of aliens in the "Godzilla" series; they try to conquer Earth in two movies, and have no relation to his origin. The "restless souls" idea is taken from "Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack", in which the souls motivate Godzilla to destroy Japan (but don't actually create him).
10. How is Godzilla usually portrayed?

Answer: Man in a suit.

The original "Godzilla" movie was actually the first to use someone in a suit to portray a monster, known as suitmation. This was decided because stop-motion took longer to execute, was much more expensive, and ultimately looked less realistic. They have used stop motion once for a deleted scene of "Godzilla vs. Biollante", and for underwater shots, full CGI shots have been used to show Godzilla swimming.
11. How was Godzilla's trademark roar created?

Answer: Rubbing the strings of a contrabass with a mesh glove and adding some reverberation to the sound

Goodness knows how they came up with that idea, but it sure did work. Although they have altered the sound numerous times to create different pitched roars, the technique is the same each time. With the exception of the part where it is slowed down, which I just made up, the method involving the wrench tapped against the telephone pole was how they created the blaster sound effects in "Star Wars".

The choice with sewer water being altered to make an electronic effect was based on how they made R2-D2's many sound effects, although they used baby talk instead of sewer water (which, again, I just made up).
12. What term do fans use to label the giant monsters seen in the "Godzilla" films, as well as those from other giant monster movies?

Answer: kaiju

(Pronounced KIE-joo.) It is a Japanese word, that, literally translated, means "strange creature" or "strange animal". Roughly, it just means monster, with kind of a supernatural overtone. The full term is actually daikaiju, which means "giant monster".

While I simply made up the use of superbeasts and leviathans, tokusatsu is actually the genre in which the "Godzilla" films belong, which basically means live-action Japanese films that make use of special effects.
13. Godzilla breathes fire.

Answer: False

Another common misconception about Godzilla is that he breathes fire, when in fact it is a stream of radiation so intense that it heats up the air around it to its plasma state. It is depicted in various ways, sometimes (in the first five films or so) as superheated mist, and appearing the rest of the time as a concentrated beam that can possess kinetic, incendiary, and explosive properties.
14. What monster almost ate Godzilla?

Answer: Orga

In the final battle of "Godzilla 2000", the monster Orga, in an attempt to absorb Godzilla's DNA so he could become a Godzilla clone, extends his mouth all the way across his body in an attempt to swallow Godzilla whole. Ultimately, Godzilla used his nuclear pulse while inside Orga's mouth, obliterating him from the inside out.
15. Who directed the first "Godzilla" movie, along with much of the Showa series?

Answer: Ishiro Honda

Yes, most of the more notable entries of the Showa series (which is not necessarily a good thing, when you take "Godzilla's Revenge" into account) were directed by Ishiro Honda. He also directed several other Showa-era kaiju films, such as "Rodan" and "Mothra," along with films such as "Return of Ultraman", and "Matango" and the TV series "Zone Fighter". Eiji Tsuburaya was the special effects director throughout most of the Showa films. Shusuke Kaneko directed "Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack" and Ryuhei Kitamura directed "Godzilla: Final Wars". Well, I hope you've enjoyed my "Godzilla" quiz.

It would have been longer, but I didn't really want to make it into two separate quizzes. Still, hopefully you either made a good score or have been reduced to tears by now. Peace!
