Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "You're tearing me apart!" "What?" "You, you say one thing, he says another, and everybody changes back again!" "That's a fine way to behave!" "Well, you know who he takes after." Choose the movie these quotes are in from these multiple choices. (Hint: One of the young stars in this movie appeared in only three movies before he was killed in a car crash at age 24.)

Answer: Rebel Without a Cause

In this scene rebellious and troubled teenager Jim Stark (James Dean) is trying to explain to his parents why they are the cause of much of his inner turmoil. Both his parents are present in this scene, but his father (Jim Backus) says nothing. Jim cries line one in anguish and his surprised mother (Ann Doran) says line two. Jim explains with line three and his annoyed mother says line four. Jim's grandmother adds line five. In one telling scene Jim tells a police court psychiatrist (Edward Platt) how his domineering mother and his paternal grandmother make "mush" out of his father. In another telling scene, his father is wearing a frilly apron while on his hands and knees, when Jim gently pulls him upright and says, "Dad... stand... don't..."

In the 1958 Academy Awards "Rebel Without a Cause" was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Natalie Wood for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Sal Mineo for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, but it didn't win any. The three main young actors in this movie all died young: James Dean died in a car accident at age 24, Sal Mineo was stabbed to death in a robbery at age 37, and Natalie Wood drowned at age 43. The three movies James Dean starred in before his death were "East of Eden" (1955), "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955), and "Giant" (1956).
2. "Is that a desert country?" "No. A fat country. Fat people." "You are not fat?" "No. I'm different." Choose the movie these quotes are in from these multiple choices. (Hint: The central character in this movie later died in a motorcycle crash.)

Answer: Lawrence of Arabia

In this scene during World War I, eccentric British Lieutenant T.E. Lawrence (a.k.a. Lawrence of Arabia, played by Peter O'Toole) is describing Great Britain to the Arab man Tafas (Zia Mohyeddin), who is guiding Lawrence through the desert to the camp of Prince Feisal (Alec Guinness). Mr. Dryden of the British Arab Bureau (Claude Rains) has convinced British General Murray (Donald Wolfit) to let Lawrence observe Prince Feisal's armed forces. Lawrence would later unite the various small desert Arab tribes into one big army to fight against the Turks, an ally of Germany in WWI. An interesting piece of movie trivia: Marlon Brando, Anthony Perkins and Albert Finney were all considered for the role of T.E. Lawrence, so it was quite a coup for relatively-unknown actor Peter O'Toole to get such a major part. Actress Katharine Hepburn is credited with urging producer Sam Spiegel to cast Peter O'Toole (Hepburn and O'Toole would later star together in the 1968 movie "The Lion in Winter").

In the 1963 Academy Awards, "Lawrence of Arabia" won seven Oscars, including Best Picture. David Lean won an Oscar for Best Director. Both Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif were nominated for acting Oscars, but neither won. Director David Lean has either won or been nominated for the Best Director Oscar seven times, including for "A Passage to India" (1985), "Dr. Zhivago" (1966), "Lawrence of Arabia" (1963), and "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (1958). This is one of those movies that should be seen on a wide screen with a good sound system to be fully appreciated. The desert vistas are stunningly beautiful and the majestic theme music is pretty impressive.
3. "I have never worked with somebody so unprofessional in my life! I mean, have you ever even acted before?" "Well, I'm learning. But let me tell you something, blondie, you're not exactly Audrey Hepburn!" Choose the movie these quotes are in from these multiple choices. (Hint: The songs "Beyond the Sea" and "Mack the Knife" are sung in this movie.)

Answer: Beyond the Sea

In this scene, on a movie set for the 1961 movie "Come September", actor Bobby Darin (Kevin Spacey) has just asked actress Sandra Dee (Kate Bosworth) to have dinner with him. She declines his offer, saying she is going to have dinner in her room and retire early. When Darin mocks her sense of excitement she says line one. Darin comes back with line two. This movie is not only a biopic of Bobby Darin's life, but also a showcase for Kevin Spacey's singing talent (he sings many of Darin's songs in this movie).

In the 2005 Golden Globes awards, Kevin Spacey was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy (but lost to Jamie Foxx in "Ray"). Darin received a Grammy award in 1959 for his version of the song "Mack The Knife" and received an award for "Best New Artist of 1959." Some of Darin's hits include "Splish Splash" (1958), "Dream Lover" (1959), "Mack The Knife" (1959) and "Beyond the Sea" (1946). The movie set for "Come September" is where Bobby Darin met Sandra Dee. They later married and stayed together until Darin's death at age 37 in 1973 (he had rheumatic fever as a child and wasn't expected to live this long). Dee never remarried and died in 2005 at age 62.
4. "Meet me in 20 minutes at the corner of El Dorado and Palm." "Lady, not for a million dollars." (Hint: The "lady" in question is actually a male dressed in drag and the setting for these quotes is outside a gay nightclub in Miami, Florida.) Choose the movie these quotes are in from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Birdcage

In this scene, ultra-conservative U.S. Senator Kevin Keeley (Gene Hackman) is dressed in drag in an attempt to escape reporters waiting at the Miami female-impersonator nightclub owned by Armand Goldman (Robin Williams). Senator Keeley's daughter has just gotten engaged to the straight son of Goldman, and Senator and Mrs. Keeley have gone to Miami to meet his parents. However, when the press discovers where he is, they camp out at the entrance hoping for a photograph. Senator Keeley senses a media disaster and tries to escape unnoticed by dressing in drag. In his drag clothes Senator Keeley looks like an unattractive, beefy female. He spots his chauffeur and (hoping for a fast getaway) says line one. The chauffeur (who does not recognize him) says line two.

In the 1997 Academy Awards "The Birdcage" was nominated for one award but didn't win (although in my opinion Nathan Lane should been nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of Albert Goldman). Lane did win several minor awards for playing that part. Hank Azaria's portrayal of the gay Guatemalan house boy Agador Spartacus is hilarious. Azaria is perhaps best known to American audiences for the many voices he provides for the U.S. television show "The Simpsons."
5. "Would you like a sip of my wine?" "I've never had a sip of a gentleman's wine before." [She takes a swig from his bottle] "Ooooh, it's very potent!" (Hint: This hilarious movie is about a young man who is raised as a gentleman in 18th century England.) Choose the movie these quotes are in from these multiple choices.

Answer: Tom Jones

In this scene a tipsy Tom Jones (played as an adult by a young Albert Finney), has just been thrown out of the house of Tom's benefactor, Squire Allworthy (George Devine), and has run into comely servant girl Molly Seagrim (Diane Cilento). Tom flirtatiously asks line one, Molly replies with line two, and after a sip of wine she says line four. Tom was celebrating the recovery of Squire Allworthy from a serious carriage accident, but while tipsy has insulted Mr. Thwackum (Peter Bull) and picked a fight with nephew Blifil (David Warner). Mr. Allworthy's recovery means Mr. Thwackum and others will not be receiving their expected inheritance. Tom is a child of unknown parentage who is being raised as a gentleman in 18th century England by Squire Allworthy. This wonderfully entertaining movie tells the story of Tom Jones, who is both charming and likeable, but seems unable to resist the advances of any attractive lady he meets.

In the 1964 Academy Awards "Tom Jones" won four Oscars, including Best Picture. Albert Finney, Hugh Griffith, Diane Cilento, Edith Evans and Joyce Redman were all nominated for Oscars but didn't win. In my opinion, Hugh Griffith should have won for Best Supporting Actor (he is just wonderful in this movie). Blifil (the son of Squire Allworthy's widowed sister Bridget) was played by David Warner at the beginning of his acting career. He is perhaps best known for playing Spicer Lovejoy (Cal's right-hand man) in the 1997 movie "Titanic". "Tom Jones" is based on English author Henry Fielding's classic 1749 novel "The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling" and is one of my all-time favorites (the version with Albert Finney, Susannah York, and Hugh Griffith).
6. "Some would say not a great seaman, but a great leader." "He's England's only hope if old Boney intends to invade." "Sir, might we press you for an anecdote?" "The first time he spoke to me, I shall never forget his words. I remember it like it was yesterday. He leaned across the table, he looked me straight in the eye, and he said "Aubrey, may I trouble you for the salt?"" (Hint: This movie is set in 1805, during the Napoleonic war between England and France.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

In this scene seven officers of the British warship HMS Surprise are seated around the dinner table in the cabin of Captain Jack "Lucky Jack" Aubrey (Russell Crowe). The talk turns to Admiral Horatio Nelson, and how Capt. Aubrey served with him when Aubrey was a young lieutenant. Mr. Allen (Robert Pugh) says line one and Capt. Howard (Chris Larkin) adds line two (the nickname "old Boney" refers to Napoleon Bonaparte). Mr. Allen asks line three and Capt. Aubrey tells the anecdote in lines four and five. In the events leading up to this scene, Capt. Aubrey has opened orders while underway to sink or capture the French privateer ship Acheron, which has been deployed to the region (off the coast of South America).

In the 2004 Academy Awards "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World " won two Oscars and was nominated in eight other categories, including Best Picture (but lost to "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King"). This is the first movie to include scenes filmed on the Galapagos Islands. Russell Crowe did most of his own violin playing in this movie. He learned to play for the film (and said it was the hardest thing he'd ever done for a movie). The screenplay for this movie is based on two novels: "Master and Commander" and "The Far Side of the World." Both are by Patrick O'Brian.
7. "Why me? Why did you pick me?" "You really don't remember, do you? We didn't pick you. You picked us. You volunteered. Right here. Even after you were warned." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices. (Hint: The central character in this movie had amnesia.)

Answer: The Bourne Ultimatum

In this scene (at the end of the movie) Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) finally confronts CIA operative Dr. Albert Hirsch (Albert Finney) about his amnesia and his being programmed as a heartless killer. Dr. Hirsch had been there from the beginning of the Treadstone project and would know the answers. Jason asks line one and Dr. Hirsch answers with line two. Jason then adds, "You said I'd be saving American lives....I was killing for you, for them." Dr. Hirsch fully expects Jason to kill him, but Jason decides he's not worth it and lets him go. Just like its predecessors, this movie has quite a few fast-paced and exciting action sequences and is fun to watch. This is the third theatrical movie based on the character developed by author Robert Ludlum.

In the 2008 Academy Awards "The Bourne Ultimatum" won three Oscars, but none of them were for the actors. The first movie in the series, "The Bourne Identity" (2002), won several minor awards, but no Oscars. The first sequel, "The Bourne Supremacy" (2004), also won several minor awards but no Oscars.
8. "Wendell Rohr. An overdue pleasure. Rankin Fitch. Nice suit." "Excuse me, we're cleaning up in here." [bolts door] "Am I going to get beat up now, Mr. Rohr?" "What'd you do to my witness? Threaten his family? Write him a check?" Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices. (Hint: This movie is based on a book by John Grisham.)

Answer: Runaway Jury

In this scene tort attorney Wendell Rohr (Dustin Hoffman) and jury consultant for the defense Rankin Fitch (Gene Hackman) have run into each other in a men's room during a break in the jury trial they are both involved in. Fitch introduces himself with line one. Rohr says line two to a stranger attempting to enter the men's room, and then bolts the door. Fitch (who knows Rohr doesn't like him) jokingly says line three. Rohr (whose key witness has failed to appear) angrily says line four. "Runaway Jury" tells the story of a civil jury trial brought by the widow of a stock broker, killed by gunfire by a disgruntled day stock trader against Vicksburg Firearms, the manufacturer of the gun. Fitch demonstrates the art of shrewdly picking a jury by carefully analyzing each prospective juror's traits, interests, previous actions, etc. and then using his peremptory challenges to excuse jurors he thinks may vote against him. One of the wonderful quotes from this movie is, "Gentlemen, trials are too important to be left up to juries."

In the 2004 award season, "Runaway Jury" won three minor awards but no Oscars, although I thought it was pretty good. According to a Biography Channel program, Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman have known each other for more than 40 years and roomed together as young actors just starting out, but this was the first movie they appeared in together. They met in 1956 when both joined the Pasadena Playhouse in California. Their classmates saw them as outsiders and voted them "The Least Likely To Succeed". Other novels written by John Grisham made into movies include "The Firm" (1993), "The Pelican Brief" (1993), "A Time to Kill (1996) and "The Rainmaker" (1997).
9. "Well, I see you're smoking pot now. I think using psychotropic drugs is a very positive example to set for our daughter." "You're one to talk, you bloodless, money-grubbing freak." (Hint: In this scene, a wife has just confronted her husband while he is bench pressing weights.)

Answer: American Beauty

In this scene Carolyn Burnham (Annette Bening) is just starting to garden when she notices the smell of marijuana coming from her garage. She opens the garage door and confronts her husband, Lester (Kevin Spacey), who is lying on a weight bench in the garage. Lester is unsatisfied with his life and is going through a mid-life crisis, but has just discovered he is attracted to his daughter's attractive, young friend Angela Hayes (Mena Suvari) and has embarked on a program to get himself in shape to impress her. Lester and his materialistic realtor wife are constantly sniping at each other and this scene is typical of their conversations. Carolyn says line one and Lester comes back with line two.

In the 2000 Academy Awards, "American Beauty" won five Oscars, including Best Picture. Kevin Spacey won Best Actor in a Leading Role. Annette Bening was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role but lost to Hilary Swank in "Boys Don't Cry". The famous image from this movie of red rose petals on a bed has frequently been used in many other posters, article pictures, etc.
10. "Is Lonnegan after you, too?" "I don't know. Haven't seen anybody." "You never do, kid." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices. (Hint: This conversation takes place in a room behind a carousel.)

Answer: The Sting

In this scene small-time con man Johnny Hooker (Robert Redford) is meeting big-time con man Henry Gondorff (Paul Newman) for the first time and they are discussing gangster Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw). Lonnegan ordered the killing of Hooker's former partner Luther Coleman (Robert Earl Jones), because Hooker and Coleman inadvertently fleeced one of Lonnegan's cash-carrying runners. Gondorff asks line one and Hooker replies with line two. Experienced Gondorff then adds line three. In order to get revenge for Luther's killing, they decide to run the "Big Con" against Lonnegan because, as Hooker notes, "'Cause I don't know enough about killin' to kill him." The result is a wonderfully entertaining movie. There is an especially surprising ending, which I won't reveal in case you haven't seen this movie!

In the 1974 Academy Awards "The Sting" won seven Oscars, including Best Picture. Robert Redford was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role, but the Oscar went to Jack Lemmon in "Save the Tiger". The only other feature film Paul Newman and Robert Redford made together was "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969). Although the two actors had hoped to co-star in a third movie, Newman's advanced age made that unlikely (Newman died in 2008 at age 83). Much of the music in "The Sting" is ragtime written by African-American composer Scott Joplin around the beginning of the 20th century (with musical adaptations for this movie by Marvin Hamlisch).
