Answer: Titanic

In this scene Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) has joined a group of first-class passengers on the RMS Titanic at dinner, as a reward for saving the life of Rose Bukater (Kate Winslet) and has just been introduced to millionaire John Jacob Astor (Eric Braeden). Astor says this first line and Dawson replies with the second. "Titanic" tells the true-life story of the luxurious White Star ocean liner RMS Titanic that sank in 1912 on its maiden voyage, through the lives of two main fictional characters, Jack Dawson and Rose Bukater. "Titanic" won 11 Oscars in the 1998 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Original Song for "My Heart Will Go On." Both Gloria Stuart (old Rose) and Kate Winslet (young Rose) were nominated for Oscars, but neither won.

Answer: The Godfather

In this scene Salvadore "Sally" Tessio (Abe Vigoda) realizes that Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) knows he was the traitor who tried to set up Michael's assassination by a rival mob boss and that he is about to be killed himself. He turns to Corleone consigliore Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) and asks this first line. Tom shakes his head and says the second line. "The Godfather" won three Oscars in the 1973 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Marlon Brando won Best Actor in a Leading Role, but refused to accept the award. Al Pacino, James Caan, and Robert Duvall were all nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, but didn't win. "The Godfather" follows the lives of a fictional American crime family, but many of the characters and incidents in this fictional story are loosely based on people and incidents in real life.

Answer: Patton

In this scene British Field Marshal, Bernard Montgomery (Michael Bates), and his troops parade into Messina during the Sicily invasion thinking they got there first, but then they see American General George Patton (George C. Scott) and his troops already there, waiting to review the British. An uncomfortable-looking Montgomery says the first line and a beaming Patton says the second. "Patton" won seven Oscars in the 1971 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. George C. Scott was chosen the winner for Best Actor but refused to accept the Oscar, stating that competition between actors was unfair and calling it a "meat parade." The role of Patton was turned down by Rod Steiger, Lee Marvin, Robert Mitchum and Burt Lancaster.

Answer: Gone with the Wind

Producer David O. Selznick elected to pay a $5,000 fine so the second line could stay in the movie. In the 1940 Academy Awards, "Gone with the Wind" won nine Oscars, including Best Picture, Vivien Leigh for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and Hattie McDaniel for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Clark Gable and Olivia de Havilland were nominated for Oscars but did not win.

In this almost-final scene in the movie, Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) is finally disgusted with Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) and leaves.

When she pleads with him to stay with her, he replies with this famous quote. Contrary to popular belief, this is not the final line in the movie. That one is by Scarlett ("After all... tomorrow is another day").

Answer: The Sting

In this scene Johnny Hooker (Robert Redford) and Henry Gondorff (Paul Newman) spot gangster Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw) in a train station and are sizing him up in anticipation of running a confidence scam on him. Hooker makes the observation in the first line but Gondorff replies with the second line. "The Sting" won Best Picture in the 1974 Academy Awards. "The Sting" was the only other feature film Paul Newman and Robert Redford made together after they made "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" in 1969.

Much of the music in "The Sting" is ragtime written by African-American composer Scott Joplin, around the beginning of the 20th century (with musical adaptations for the movie by Marvin Hamlisch). Jack Nicholson turned down the role of Johnny Hooker before Robert Redford changed his mind and decided to take the part.

Answer: Casablanca

In this almost final scene in the movie, Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), owner of Rick's Cafe Americain nightclub in Casablanca, is talking to Ilsa Laszlo (Ingrid Bergman). She is reluctant to take an airplane out of Casablanca to join her husband Victor (Paul Henreid) and instead is wavering about staying in Casablanca with Rick.

He gives her advice to leave and then adds "Here's lookin' at you, kid." In the 1944 Academy Awards, "Casablanca" won three Oscars, including Best Picture. Humphrey Bogart was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Rick, but didn't win the Oscar.

Answer: L.A. Confidential

In this scene Detectives Exley (Guy Pearce) and Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) spot gangster Johnny Stompanato (Paolo Seganti) at a nightclub table and want to question him. Detective Exley says the first line while attempting to shoo off Stompanato's date, but Detective Vincennes makes the observation in the second line. An incensed Lana Turner (Brenda Bakke) throws a drink in Detective Exley's face! The word "cut" refers to plastic surgery designed to make wannabe movie actresses look like famous stars. "L.A. Confidential" was nominated for Best Picture in the 1998 Academy Awards but lost to "Titanic".

Historical note: Some months later Stompanato would be stabbed to death by Turner's 14-year-old daughter, Cheryl. However, Lana took the blame (supposedly to protect her daughter) and was found innocent since her testimony caused the death to be labeled a justifiable homicide.

Some observers have said her testimony at the coroner's inquest was the acting performance of her life.

Answer: Tom Jones

In this scene London resident Miss Western (Edith Evans) encounters her country farmer brother (Hugh Griffith) sprawled on a haystack and says the first line. He misunderstands her comment and replies with the second. She considers him an uncouth country bumpkin.

He considers her a citified busybody. This hilarious movie tells the story of Tom Jones (played as a young adult by a young Albert Finney), a child of unknown parentage who is raised as a gentleman in 18th century England. In the 1964 Academy Awards "Tom Jones" won four Oscars, including Best Picture. "Tom Jones" is one of my all-time favorites (the version with Albert Finney, Susannah York, and Hugh Griffith).

Answer: Moonstruck

In this scene Loretta Castorini (Cher) goes into the Sweetheart Liquor Store to buy a bottle of champagne and the middle-age couple behind the counter are in middle of a discussion. She says the first line and her husband replies with the second line.

Then he adds, "You know what I see in you, Lotte? The girl I married." She is caught off guard and blushes. Loretta smiles on her way out. "Moonstruck" was nominated for Best Picture in the 1988 Academy Awards but lost out to "The Last Emperor." Cher won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Loretta Castorini and Olympia Dukakis won one for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her portrayal of Loretta's mother Rose. Vincent Gardenia was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role as Loretta's father Cosmo, but lost to Sean Connery in "The Untouchables." "Moonstruck" is another one of my all-time favorites.

Answer: Apollo 13

This scene starts with an ominous transmission from the Apollo 13 spacecraft: "Houston, we have a problem." The Houston command center realizes trouble on board the spacecraft may prevent its safe return to earth and the NASA Director (Joe Spano) says this first line. Optimistic co-worker Gene Kranz (Ed Harris) replies with the second line.

This movie is based on the true story of the ill-fated 13th Apollo mission bound for the moon. America has already achieved their lunar landing goal (by Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin in 1969), so there's little interest in this "routine" flight. That is, until things go very wrong, and prospects of a safe return fade. "Apollo 13" was nominated for Best Picture in the 1996 Academy Awards but lost out to "Braveheart."
