Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It takes a special kind of parents to forget about a child when boarding a plane, but the parents of Kevin McCallister managed to do it twice. This leads little Kevin to be quite literally left "Home Alone", where he encounters a pair of bumbling crooks. Who plays the crooks?

Answer: Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern

In the first movie his family is in such a rush to catch a flight to Paris for the holidays that they leave him accidentally. The crooks are known as the Wet Bandits due to their penchant to flood their victim's homes. Kevin stops the crooks with various traps.
Now after that you would think the parents would be more careful, but no. The very next year the family attempts to take another holiday trip. This time Kevin makes it to the airport, but ends up on a plane for New York instead of with his family. Then, with the kind of coincidence that would only happen in Hollywood, Kevin ends up with the one bag that has all his dad's credit cards. He uses them to check into a hotel, but soon the staff finds out the cards are stolen and Kevin is forced to run away. Unfortunately he runs right into the now Sticky Bandits, who just happen to have escaped from jail and wound up in New York (what are the odds).
It was these two movies that launched Macaulay Culkin's career.
2. According to the title of a film made in 1974, and remade in 2006, what kind of Christmas do a group of sorority girls have?

Answer: Black

Both movies feature a mentally scarred man named Billy, who is killing off the current inhabitants of a house he is hiding in. The girls have been receiving perverted calls before the murders but do not know from whom. Ultimately the reveal of the movie is that they are coming from inside the house all along, a plot point used later in many horror movies.
3. What is the name of the mean old codger Lionel Barrymore plays in "It's a Wonderful Life"?

Answer: Mr Potter

Th movie is about a very giving man named George Bailey. When his life turns sour he contemplates suicide. He is stopped by his guardian angel Clarence, but now wishes he had never been born. Clarence shows him what life would be like for all those he cares about, if he had never been born.

His brother would be dead, the town became a slum owned almost entirely by a Scrooge-like Mr Potter, and in general he sees that all of his friend's lives are much worse off. He asks to have his life back and his wish is granted, which also enables Clarence to finally earn his wings.
4. A comedy spoof of the "Jaws" franchise revolves around killer pine trees. The second film in the "Trees" series has a pack of killer Christmas trees attacking a small town. What is the subtitle of that movie?

Answer: The Root of All Evil

The movies were completely ripped-off from the plot of the "Jaws" series. The first film has a Great White Pine that attacks and kills. A pine expert is called in and made a recommendation to close the woods, which is ignored by the mayor. The final scene of that movie takes place in a pick-up truck, but is otherwise the same ending as "Jaws".

The second movie finds not one, but several trees on the rampage. The trees are stolen from a government genetic experiment and sold as Christmas trees. The final battle is like something out of a war movie, with the army of trees colliding with armed villagers.

The final scene lampoons "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back". In it, the botanist from the first two movies is encased in sap and taken away by a bounty hunter.
5. In the original telling of "The Grinch who Stole Christmas" the Grinch is nothing more than a mean and vile meanie. But in the 2000 remake he is played much more sympathetically, as a misunderstood kid who was bullied until he fled town. Thus a new and even slimier villain is created, known as Mayor Augustus Maywho. What actor plays him?

Answer: Jeffrey Tambor

Although some could argue the real villain of the piece is commercialism, Tambor plays a magnificently underhanded and despicable character that makes you root for the Grinch.
Clint Howard plays the mayor's flunky, Whobris. Anthony Hopkins plays the narrator, in an nod to his predecessor in the role Boris Karloff, as both are most famous for their portrayals of monsters of cinema.
6. "Bad Santa" is another movie where the person, who initially appears to be the villain, surprises you. Here the titular mall Santa, Willie, played by Billy Bob Thornton, is upstaged as the bad guy by his partner. What role in the mall Santa scam did his partner have?

Answer: Elf

His partner Marcus(Tony Cox) is an extremely temperamental elf. Each year they would case the mall that they were hired by and rob it after hours. One year a suspicious mall security guard discovers their scheme and demands half the money. Ultimately, the guard is killed by Marcus who, along with his wife, plan to kill Willie too.

A letter Willie writes ends up with the police, and the robbery and attempted murder are foiled.
7. What is the name of Martin Short's bad guy character in "Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause"?

Answer: Jack Frost

In the movie Jack Frost is out to steal the Santa role. To achieve this he tricks Tim Allen's Santa/Scott Calvin into using the Escape Clause. The Escape Clause allows the current Santa to go back in time and prevent the circumstances of their becoming Santa from happening (this despite the fact that in the previous movies when Scott had wanted out of the Santa role he was told there was no way out). Scott initially prevents his becoming Santa and he finds out that he became a workaholic boss at his old company, while the North Pole became a tourist attraction for rich parents, under the tyrannical rule of Jack.

In the end Scott becomes Santa again and Jack's cold heart is melted.
8. Now what would a quiz about Christmas baddies be with out that guy who started it all, Scrooge. What actor plays the role of a Scrooge-like Frank Cross in the movie "Scrooged"?

Answer: Bill Murray

In the film Murray plays a television executive who is so single-minded with his career that he has alienated everyone around him. When he is put in charge of a television production of "A Christmas Carol", his life starts to reflect the story. After visits from the three ghosts, he changes his ways and reunites with his first love.
9. Even superheroes can get into the holiday spirit but the bad guys have to ruin it. In "Batman Returns", what villain causes the Ice Princess of Gotham to plummet off a building during a tree lighting ceremony and gets Batman blamed for it?

Answer: Penguin

Although Catwoman puts the Ice Princess in danger by placing her on the roof's edge, it is penguin who delivers the coup de gras. He throws an umbrella at her that unleashes a swarm of bats, which scares the Princess and causes her to fall off. The actress playing the Princess plays the ditsy blonde so well that you can dismiss the question of why she does not just hop down to the safety of the rooftop.

The movie itself is the second in the "Batman" franchise and the last with Michael Keaton and Tim Burton.
10. What ex-pro wrestler plays the part of a satanic Santa in the movie "Santa's Slay"?

Answer: Bill Goldberg

The movie is perhaps the most twisted version of Santa I have ever heard. In it, Santa is revealed as the second virgin birth (the movie calls it an immaculate conception but technically that is not correct as that term refers to a birth without sin, something pretty hard for the son of Satan). Santa is a violent demon and the holiday of Christmas is founded as a day to pray to Christ for protection from Santa. Eventually an angel assumes the form of a human and beats Santa at a game of curling. As a result Santa is forced to play nice and give out presents for the next 1000 years. Once that time is up Santa comes looking for the still-in-human-form angel in the town, of what else, Hell.

After arriving he terrorizes the town. The movie includes a number of celebrity cameos including Dave Thomas (the mayor) and a family played by Chris Kattan, Rebecca Gayheart, James Cann and Fran Drescher (ironically in that Xmas family bash all involved, including Santa, are Jewish in real life). Ultimately Santa is stopped after his reindeer (really a white buffalo) is killed by hunters and he is rendered powerless at the stroke of midnight, when Christmas ends.
