Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Christmas favorite features such characters as the angel Clarence, the old curmudgeon Mr. Potter and the generous George Bailey?

Answer: It's a Wonderful Life

Anyone in the United States (and I imagine other English-speaking countries as well) who has a functioning television must have seen this film at least once. Jimmy Stewart (George Bailey), Lionel Barrymore (Mr. Potter) and Henry Travers (Clarence) are among the featured actors in this classic film cast. Frank Capra directs this masterpiece about a man named George Bailey who fights to keep a humble savings-and-loan alive despite its relative lack of profitability.
2. 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' was a made-for-TV animated film that debuted in 1965, the first animated 'Peanuts' special. In this special, which character quotes the Bible in delivering 'the true meaning of Christmas'?

Answer: Linus

Specifically, Linus quotes Luke 2:8-14.

All of the voices in this animated film are those of little children. Some of the kids were so young at the time of filming that they could not read and were taught to deliver the lines using phonetics.
3. The original 1966 animated version of Dr. Seuss's Christmas book 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas!' has simply become a classic. Which actor, known for his horror film roles, provided both the narration for this show and the voice of the Grinch?

Answer: Boris Karloff

Boris Karloff does the Grinch's voice only during spoken lines. The singing was performed by Thurl Ravenscroft, who is better known as the voice of Tony the Tiger, of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes fame.
4. When one thinks of Christmas films, one can't help but reminisce about 'A Christmas Story', the tale of a young boy named Ralphie who is practically obsessed with getting which type of item as a Christmas gift?

Answer: BB gun

Specifically, Ralphie (played by Peter Billingsley) wants an 'official Red Ryder Carbon Action 200 shot range model air rifle', but he's told repeatedly that he'll 'shoot his eye out'. Actors Melinda Dillon and Darren McGavin really help make this film a classic, playing Ralphie's mother and father, respectively.
5. Many great versions of Charles Dickens' classic short novel 'A Christmas Carol' have been released to the silver screen. One of the most beloved is the 1951 version, entitled 'Scrooge', which features which actor in the title role?

Answer: Alistair Sim

Directed by Brian Desmond Hurst, the 1951 movie, produced in the U.K., is for many the definitive film version of Dickens' wonderful tale.
6. Which 1988 action film, starring Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman, is not usually thought of as a Christmas film, but indeed has Xmas as a theme throughout?

Answer: Die Hard

In the film, the Bruce Willis character (John McClane) comes to Los Angeles to be with his estranged wife and children during Christmas. He intends to attend his wife's company Christmas party, but then things go badly awry. There are a number of Xmas references throughout the film, and the soundtrack even contains several Yuletide songs, for example 'Winter Wonderland', 'Let it Snow!' and the rap 'Christmas in Hollis' by Run-D.M.C.
7. Jack Skellington, Oogie Boogie and Sally are among the characters that can be found lurking about in which unconventional Christmas-time extravaganza?

Answer: The Nightmare Before Christmas

From the demented mind of Tim Burton comes this story about well-meaning Halloween characters who are lured into taking over Christmas by their overzealous leader Jack Skellington. Danny Elfman's music and the magical animations of Tim Burton make this film a must-see.
8. 'Miracle on 34th Street' broke into theaters just in the nick of time in 1947. What is the name of the sweet little girl played by Natalie Wood in this heartwarming Christmas classic?

Answer: Susan

Natalie Wood was only 9-years old when she played the part of Susan Walker in this sweet film that has withstood the test of time. Edmund Gwenn, who plays Kris Kringle in the film, received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his efforts.
9. 'Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer' was a fantastic animated short film, made originally for television in 1964. Which of these is not the name of a character that appears in this charming little story?

Answer: Heat Miser

In this classic stop motion animated special, Rudolph is joined by Clarice, a doe who is attracted to Rudolph, Hermey, an elf who would prefer to be a dentist, and Yukon Cornelius, a prospector for peppermint. Burl Ives provides the narration.
10. 'Holiday Inn' was a 1942 film featuring two of the biggest names in Hollywood history, namely Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby. Which Christmas-related song did Bing Crosby immortalize through voice and whistle in this film?

Answer: White Christmas

Though the film 'Holiday Inn' isn't exclusively a Christmas movie, it is most well-known for Crosby's rendition of the song 'White Christmas'. In fact, his version of the song became so popular, another entire movie was made featuring Crosby and Danny Kaye that was entitled 'White Christmas'.
