Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What studio was responsible for the creation of "The Emperor's New Groove"?

Answer: Disney

As you're certainly all aware, Disney Studios has been responsible for many of the highest-grossing/most widely-viewed animated films of all time, including such classics as "Fantasia", "The Lion King", "The Little Mermaid" and "Bambi". Pixar is the company behind the recent smash hit movie, "Finding Nemo", which was computer generated. 20th Century Fox created "Titan A.E.", a year 2000 film which mixed CG and hand-drawn animation. Miyazaki is a director, famous in Japan and catching on in North America with such recent cult favourites as "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away".
2. Who gives voice to Emperor Kuzco, of groove fame?

Answer: David Spade

David Spade is a popular comedian, famous for appearances on "Saturday Night Live", the sitcom "Just Shoot Me", and in several recent movies, including his latest one, "Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star". Kuzco was a perfect role for him. George W. Bush is the President of the United States as of 2003. Pink is a standout in the music industry as a white woman with pink hair who performs mostly R and B songs.
3. Emperor Kuzco has his own personal "theme song guy".

Answer: True

Not only does he indeed have a "theme song guy", Kuzco also has a personal butler, chef and royal advisor, as well as bodyguards by the dozen and pretty much everything else. He even has about 50 carpenters who will appear out of nowhere and build a new door if Kuzco should feel the need to walk through a wall.
4. Why does Kuzco summon a peasant named Pacha to the palace?

Answer: To ask Pacha which side of his hill gets the most sun

Kuzco has never had to ask permission for anything in his life. And no doubt he has no lack of royal shoe shiners and totem carvers.
5. What is the name of the project Kuzco is planning to build on Pacha's hill?

Answer: Kuzcotopia

Anachronisms abound in this movie, not the least of which is the idea of a theme-park type creation being plunked in the middle of a barely-medieval village that lives primarily by agriculture. Kuzco himself could have been pulled from a 21st century nightclub and cast in the movie.
6. Who is the voice of Pacha?

Answer: John Goodman

John Goodman has nothing in common with Pacha in terms of looks except for the fact that they're both rather tubby, but his voice suits the character well. If you like John Goodman, he has a hilarious role in the movie "Arachnophobia", as Delbert the pest control expert. John Candy was a famous Canadian comedian. Eddie Murphy is most famous as the "Beverly Hills Cop" (parts 1, 2 and 3), and more recently has been in the partially computer animated film "Dr. Dolittle", among many others. George Bush Sr. is the father of George W. and is a former President of the USA.
7. What was Yzma's first plan to get rid of Emperor Kuzco?

Answer: Turn him into a flea, mail him to herself and smash the package when it arrived

Interesting scheme. And anyway, if they can have theme parks and theme songs in the time period this movie takes place, they can have Mad Cow Disease (otherwise known as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy).
8. Why did Yzma abandon her first scheme for Kuzco removal?

Answer: To save on postage

I wonder if the postal system works 21st century style... Yzma could have checked her Kuzco shipment online, right to her door! Maybe she uses UPS, "What can BROWN do for you?"
9. When cooking, what is Kronk's specialty?

Answer: Spinach puffs

At the end of the movie, Yzma cruelly confides that she never liked Kronk's spinach puffs. If you've seen "Austin Powers 2", you'll remember this line: "I want my baby-back baby-back baby-back . . . RIIIIBS, I want my baby-back baby-back baby-back... RIIIBS,". "Fried Green Tomatoes" was a reference to a movie of the same name starring Jessica Lange. Spaghetti is a type of pasta; if you're ever in Toronto, check out The Pickle Barrel, they make great spaghetti with meatballs.
10. Just to trick you when you thought the quiz was in chronological order, this question gets thrown at you: Earlier in the movie, Kuzco gets a chance to choose a bride from one of... how many different women?

Answer: 7

Apparently amusement parks, modern postal systems and theme songs aren't the only interestingly modern ideas/technology possessed by Kuzco's people: they must have also had cloning. Without looking particularly close it's easy to see that every single one of the seven women has exactly the same face.
11. What does Kronk accidentally feed Kuzco instead of the poison Yzma told him to use?

Answer: Extract of llama

Eau de toilette is a mysteriously popular brand of cologne/perfume. "A nice Chianti" is what Anthony Hopkins, playing Hannibal in "The Silence of the Lambs" (an excellent movie), says he would have consumed with the liver of a man he had killed. Some people consider wasps and other insects (probably bees as well) dipped in chocolate to be a delicacy.
12. What unexpectedly pops into the picture just after Kronk rescues Kuzco from the waterfall?

Answer: A chimp eating a bug

Kuzco himself is narrating the scene at this point and even he's startled by the sudden appearance of a chimp consuming insect life. It's kind of a funny attempt at commenting on the somewhat-overused movie cliche of zooming out and out and out in order to portray a proper sense of scale.
13. What causes Kronk to fall down the stairs while carrying Kuzco?

Answer: A cat

The cat ends up on Kronk's head at the bottom. And a painful descent it was. Among the many anachronisms present, a boy on a tricycle wasn't one of them. A pterodactyl is a featherless flying dinosaur (Well, not technically. Pterodactyls are not part of the class Dinosauria, which consists only of land and some sea creatures.

But most people think "dinosaur" when they hear "pterodactyl".).
14. What does Kronk exclaim while falling down the stairs?

Answer: "Back, elbow, shoulder!"

He says the name of each body part as he hits it on the way down. In true Hollywood fashion however, he comes away from the tumble none the worse for wear.
15. When Kuzco first awakes after his ordeal with Kronk, he thinks Pacha caused his... problem.

Answer: True

Oddly enough he thinks Pacha turned him into a llama in order to coerce him into not destroying Pacha's village in favour of Kuzcotopia. If Pacha could do that, presumably he would have just snapped his fingers and blasted Kuzco to niblets way back in the palace, but Kuzco isn't exactly thinking straight. Nor would I be if I woke up as a llama.
16. What is the name of Pacha's wife?

Answer: Chicha

Nowhere in the movie does anyone actually say her name. It's in the closed captioning when she speaks, and it's in the credits. Macchu Picchu, Chichen Itza and Angkor Wat are all the names of temples of various cultures spread throughout the world. Also, has anyone noticed that Chicha looks strangely like the women Kuzco got to choose from earlier? Doesn't anyone at Disney know how to draw a different face, besides Yzma, who looks like a prune?
17. What does Kuzco do when an innocent squirrel gives him a nut as an offering of friendship?

Answer: Bonks the squirrel on the head with it

As Jar Jar Binks (a character which, in the opinion of many, murdered the "Star Wars" franchise permanently) might say, "How ROOD!"
18. What does the squirrel do to try to square things with Kuzco?

Answer: Pops a balloon while Kuzco is standing amidst tons of sleeping jaguars

The balloon exploded with some major force. It was shaped like a llama; quite a talented squirrel, he could make a living outside a museum or at a carnival. It's a hilarious scene since the squirrel's plot doesn't actually wake up the jaguars, and Kuzco says "Ha!" in triumph, which of course wakes them up.
19. How does Pacha first attempt to save Kuzco from the jaguars?

Answer: Swinging in on a vine, Tarzan-like

Pacha does indeed try to save Kuzco even though a lot of people in his position most likely wouldn't, and although his attempt goes seriously awry. Pacha makes a pretty well-endowed "Tarzan" in terms of stomach... er... "musculature".
20. What ends up happening that takes Kuzco and Pacha away from the jaguars?

Answer: They plunge over a waterfall

Kuzco: "Sharp rocks at the bottom?"

Pacha: "Most likely."

Kuzco: "Bring it on."

I doubt there are any squirrels friendly to Kuzco out there. The giant bat idea came from the eagle in "The Lord of the Rings" that carried Gandalf away from Isengard.
21. At one point Pacha and Kuzco dressed up as husband and wife.

Answer: True

As disturbing as it may seem, indeed at one point Kuzco becomes a cross-dresser for the purposes of disguise. A waitress comments (one would hope, sarcastically) with, "Bless you for coming out in public."
22. What does the waitress say after serving Pacha and Kuzco complementary Pillbug?

Answer: "Mazel tov"

While Giant Pillbug is undoubtedly good for the skin, that's not what the waitress says. Mazel tov is a traditional Yiddish way of saying "congratulations", as in a toast.
23. When the summoned guards come in to seize Kuzco and Pacha, they are turned into various animals. Which animal asks to go home, and is excused by Yzma?

Answer: The cow

I'm not entirely sure why a cow warrants an early punch-out whereas an octopus does not. Latrodectus Mactans is the scientific name of the Black Widow spider. Another reference to "Arachnophobia".
24. What is Yzma accidentally turned into while fighting with Kuzco?

Answer: A kitten

When she tries to chuckle evilly she's somewhat thwarted by having a kitten's voice. A kitten just can't be an arch-villain. A procompsognathus is a small, bird-like scavenger dinosaur made famous by the book "Jurassic Park". They don't appear in the movie franchise until the second episode, "The Lost World".
25. Where did Kuzco eventually decide to set up Kuzcotopia?

Answer: On the hill next to Pacha's

Kuzco does manage to grow a heart at the end, in true Disney fashion. He sets up near Pacha and allows Pacha's village to stay where it is. "The Emperor's New Groove" is a terrific movie, not only for children as I first suspected when my fiancee tried to convince me to watch it.

It contains a surprising amount of adult humour, but nothing in a form that would be inappropriate for children. If there's any family out there that hasn't seen this movie, go rent it.
