Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What disaster film gave us the immortal line, "I gotta go, we got cows."?

Answer: Twister

If you're looking for cows, you have to go with "Twister" (1996) which features cows flying every which way around the Oklahoma countryside. Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton play a separated couple; she is leading a team of storm chasers following some of the largest tornadoes the Midwest has ever seen, while he is simply trying to get her to finalize their divorce.

They wind up getting back together by the end of the film. Jami Gertz, playing Paxton's fiancee Melissa, delivers the line. She is in a truck as cows are flying past, talking with a patient on a cell phone.

As for the other films, there are not too many cows in downtown Los Angeles, outer space or the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
2. Which of these George Clooney films should you watch if you want to AVOID seeing cows?

Answer: Good Night, and Good Luck

In "Three Kings" (1999), a cow is blown sky high by a land mine, right in front of Clooney's truck. In "O Brother Where Art Thou" (2000), you have George Nelson machine-gunning cows, and a cow floating on top of a house in a flood. "Cows! I hate cows worse than coppers!" says Nelson. "Leatherheads" (2008) is about the early days of football, and features a football game in a cow pasture. Cows have it rough in Clooney films.

There are no cows to be found in "Good Night, and Good Luck" which is about journalist Edward R Murrow and his fight against Senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s.
3. In what film does John Travolta shoot at cows?

Answer: Battlefield Earth

In "Battlefield Earth" (2000), Travolta plays Terl, a member of the alien Psychlo race which has enslaved Earth. Terl demonstrates his marksmanship by shooting at cows. The movie is based on the novel by L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. It focuses on the start of a rebellion by the humans against their alien overlords. In "Broken Arrow" (1996), Travolta plays an Air Force officer stealing nuclear weapons.

He shoots people, not cows. In "Swordfish" (2001), he plays a covert anti-terrorist agent.

He shoots several people and blows up others, but no cows. Travolta shot several people in "Pulp Fiction" (1994) but no cows.
4. What really bad 2001 comedy features a dairy cow dangling from a hot air balloon?

Answer: Rat Race

"Rat Race" is an extremely bad remake of "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World". A group of idiots chases after a treasure, all at the whim of a group of wealthy gamblers.
The unfortunate cow is tied to the balloon, which is piloted by Seth Green and Vince Vieluf. The cow is eventually hit by a tour bus being driven by Cuba Gooding, Jr. This may be the worst film ever to star more than one Academy Award winner (Whoopi Goldberg is also in it).
In "Joe Dirt" (2001) an unfortunate cow has firecrackers stuffed into its posterior. In "Bubble Boy" (2001), PushPop (Brian George) drives over a cow with his car. "Freddy Got Fingered" (also 2001) contains many disturbing things, but none involving cows.
5. In what 2004 comedy are school children horrified by the sight of a farmer shooting a cow?

Answer: Napoleon Dynamite

In "Napoleon Dynamite" Lyle (Dale Critchlow) shoots the cow. Napoleon's grandmother ays they have run out of steak and Lyle is going to fix that problem. We only hear the shotgun go off, but have to assume the worst. "Napoleon Dynamite" is a quirky comedy about high school students living in Idaho.
Cows also have it rough in "50 First Dates" as Lucy (Drew Barrymore) hits a cow in a traffic accident. While many things are shot at and blown up in "Team America," none of them are cows. Many cows are eaten at the end of "Harold and Kumar" but none are shot on screen.
6. Bored by cow tipping? What should you watch to see something different?

Answer: Barnyard

"Barnyard" is an animated comedy from 2006 that turns the idea of cow-tipping on its head by having the cows tip over humans. The film features Courtney Cox, Wanda Sykes, Kevin James and Sam Elliott as cows.
In "Beth Cooper" (2009) Cammy (Lauren London), Treece (Lauren Storm), and Rich (Jack Carpenter) try to tip over a cow but fail. In "Tommy Boy" Tommy Callaghan is not successful at tipping over a cow. He is successful at falling in manure, starting a stampede and getting a farmer to shoot at him. Farley shared an MTV Movie Award with David Spade for their work on "Tommy Boy" (1995).
"Heathers" (1988) has football jocks Kurt and Ram trying their hand at cow-tipping. Cow-tipping gets mentioned in "US Marshals" (1998), "Pearl Harbor" (2001) and "Sweet Home Alabama" (2002). Cow tipping is generally regarded as an urban legend; research shows it would take at least two, and possibly four, people to generate the energy necessary to tip over a cow.
7. What Adam Sandler comedy features a parody of "Rocky" in which John Turturro punches a live cow?

Answer: You Don't Mess with the Zohan

Turturro plays Fatoush "The Phantom" Hakbarah, the arch-enemy of The Zohan (Sandler). The parody of "Rocky" includes him drinking eggs and punching sides of beef, and one turns out to be still mooing. "Don't Mess With the Zohan" stars Sandler as a former Israeli secret agent who is trying to start over as a hairdresser. It is sort of a romantic comedy, as he falls in love with his arch-enemy's sister.
"Billy Madison" (1995) includes a strange sub-plot about a penguin, and "Happy Gilmore" (1996) features the violent demise of an alligator. Animals have it rough in Sandler films.
8. Which of these animated films LACKS an Academy Award winning actress giving voice to a cow?

Answer: Open Season

"Home on the Range" (2004) gives us Judi Dench as Mrs Calloway the cow. Dench also narrates "Doogal" (2006), in which Whoopi Goldberg plays Ermintrude, an opera-singing cow. And "Charlotte's Web" (2006) has Kathy Bates as Bitsy the Cow. Oscar winner Julia Roberts is the title spider.
"Open Season" (2006) features neither cows nor Oscar winners. Martin Lawrence voices a grizzy bear and Ashton Kutcher is a mule deer. The film is about their adventures when the bear tries to escape captivity.
9. What Jim Carrey comedy includes an extremely memorable scene involving a cow?

Answer: Me, Myself and Irene

In "Me, Myself and Irene" (2000) Carrey's character is a highway patrol officer, who comes across a cow on the road. The cow proves rather difficult to kill. After shooting the cow multiple times, Carrey attempts to choke the beast. It is one of the more bizarre scenes in a very bizarre film. The "Me, Myself" part is from the fact that Carrey's officer has a split personality: one mild-mannered, the other completely psychotic. The other films have the wild slapstick comedy that is a Carrey trademark, but no cows.
10. "Inglourious Basterds" opens with a scene on a dairy farm in what country?

Answer: France

Chapter One opens in Nazi-occupied France. Colonal Hans Landa (Cristoph Waltz in an Oscar-winning performance) visits the farm of Perrier LaPadite, a French dairy farmer who has been harboring some Jewish neighbors. In a tense exchange, Landa is both charming and menacing.

At one point he congratulates LaPadite on "vos filles et vos vaches," meaning his daughters and his cows. However, vache also has a vulgar sexual meaning in French, making this a veiled threat that Landa's soldiers could do something very nasty to the daughters. LaPadite caves and reveals where he is hiding the Jews.

The actual cows are seen very briefly; they appear to be Holsteins. Just FYI, the Nazis don't harm the cows. Many people are killed in "Inglorious Basterds" but no cows.

The Quentin Tarantino film is centered on a group of Jewish-American soldiers engaged in guerilla warfare in France, and a plot to kill the Nazi high command at a film premiere.
