Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What US state began using talking cows to promote their dairy industry starting in late 2003?

Answer: California

The California Milk Advisory Board has been advertising with the slogan "Great cheese comes from Happy Cows. Happy Cows come from California." The ads are generally done in a humorous vein.

The "Happy Cows" spots were part of a $33 million advertising effort that was syndicated nationally. It was designed by the Los Angeles firm of Deustch LA, run by famed advertising guru Donny Deutsch. The "Happy Cows" were seen during the 2004 and 2005 Superbowls.

California is the United States' second largest producer of cheese, after Wisconsin. PETA unsuccessfully sued the California MAB, claiming that conditions on California farms created cows that were not happy. A judge threw out the case.
2. What fast food company has been using cows holding poorly spelled signs to entice people to buy their products?

Answer: Chik-Fil-A

Chik-Fil-A began their "Eat Mor Chikin" campaign in 1995. The corporate website contains many of the commercials. It also has cow calendars and a wide variety of other cow related merchandise available, including plush dolls.

The cows campaign was created by The Richards Group, a Dallas based advertising firm. It started out with billboards and grew into television ads and then a company-wide motif.

Chik-Fil-A began in suburban Atlanta in 1946. It is one of the largest fast food chains in the United States, with over 1800 stores in 41 states. The restaurant is known for its Southern Baptist values, closing on Sunday. In 2012, the company had a major controversy over their beliefs on same sex marriage, one of the odder moments of the culture wars between liberals and conservatives in the United States.
3. What company spent a fortune on an ad during the 2011 Superbowl that featured a rock band made up of cows to promote their research on methane?

Answer: General Electric

General Electric ran the commercial as part of their "Ecomagination" campaign. The band was known as The Electric Cattle. The commercial discussed GE efforts at biogas research from landfills and cattle, with cows looking at an electrical generator outside an arena as the band played on stage.

CBS charged $3 million for a 30 second commercial during the 2011 Superbowl. Since GE took in $147 billion in revenue for 2011, they can afford it. For that money, they can probably teach cows how to perform rock music.
4. Also appearing during the 2011 Superbowl was Shamrock Farms. What actress gave voice to Roxie, the fairy godmother cow?

Answer: Kathy Najimy

Kathy Najimy's voice is quite familiar to fans of "King of the Hill" where she voiced Peggy Hill. Najimy has been acting since the early 1990s; her first big break was as Sister Mary Patrick in "Sister Act" (1992). Najimy began doing the voice of Roxie in 2005.

The ad was created by the Richards Group and Ring of Fire Studios. Shamrock Farms is a family-owned dairy company which was founded in Tucson, Arizona in 1922.
5. What dairy company created the mascot of "Elsie the Cow" in 1935?

Answer: Borden

Borden created Elsie to promote their dairy products. There was a real life Elsie at the 1939 World's Fair. She was a cow from Connecticut named "You'll Do, Lobelia".

Elsie the Cow was named one of the top ten advertising icons of the 20th century by "Ad Age" magazine in 2000. Borden today exists only as a brand. The company was bought up in a leveraged buyout in 1995, had most of its divisions sold off, and by 2005 it had effectively ceased to exist as an actual company.
6. Since 1921, the French company Fromageries Bel has used what kind of a cow to market their spreadable cheese?

Answer: Laughing Cow

The Laughing Cow (in French: La Vache qui rit) has been used by Bel for almost a century to market their wedges of spreadable cheese. The cheese comes from Lons-le-Saunier, which is near the French Alps and Switzerland.

Not one, but two punk rock bands (Rain and Zounds) have released albums with the title "La Vache qui Rit". Hosni Mubarak, the deposed president of Egypt, actually had the nickname "La Vache qui Rit". In Zurich, "La Vache qui Lit" is an award given out by the public library for children's literature.
7. In 2010, Cadbury, England's largest chocolate company, released a video of a cow named Frieda tap dancing to what song?

Answer: Putting on the Ritz

"Putting on the Ritz" was written by Irving Berlin in 1927 and first published in 1929. It has been used in many films since, perhaps most memorably in a duet between Gene Wilder and Peter Boyle in "Young Frankenstein" (1974).

Frieda the dancing cow was part of the "Glass and a Half Full Productions" campaign from Cadbury. The most famous video is a gorilla playing the Genesis song "In the Air Tonight", which came out in 2007.
"I Got Rhythm" was written by George Gershwin in 1930. "I Get a Kick Out of You" and "Anything Goes" were written by Cole Porter for the 1934 musical "Anything Goes".
8. Rowan Glen, a Scottish dairy company, introduced a campaign with two talking cows in June 2011. What were the names of the cows?

Answer: Gwen and Jen

Gwen and Jen are two cows who are spying on the Glen Rowan factory. They speak with decidedly Scottish accents.
Jen: "Apple crumb [yogurt]"
Gwen: "It has nothing on grass."-
Jen: "I know".

Rowan Glen is based near Newton Stewart in southwest Scotland. They are quite proud of their natural yogurt, and also make cheese and butter. Rowan Glen are the official dairy sponsors of the Glasgow Warriors rugby team.
Sophie and Emily were the two most popular names for Scottish girls in 2012.
9. Milka, a chocolate brand from Switzerland, has been dyeing real cows what color as part of their advertising efforts?

Answer: Purple

The purple cow has been a brand symbol since 1901, and the company started using real cows in 1972. Milka is a contraction Milch and Kakao, the German words for milk and cacao, the key ingredients in milk chocolate.

Milka was created by Suchard, which merged with Tobler in 1970. Today it is part of Mondelēz International (formerly Kraft Foods).

The company uses Simmenthal cattle, which are usually brown and white, and dyes them purple. The packaging for the candy bars has been purple since 1901.
10. In May 2010, Anchor Butter released a commercial called "Paradise City" featuring cows running a factory. What country is Anchor based in?

Answer: New Zealand

Anchor Butter was founded in New Zealand in 1886. According to their website, they are iconic as a brand of butter in New Zealand. The ad was created by Matt Collier and Wayne Robinson of CHI & Partners.

"Paradise City" was released by Guns N' Roses, an American rock band, in 1987. It peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
