Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The story takes place on planet Earth in the year 2035. In this time, robots are commonly assistants and workers for their human owners. The robots were all created by Dr. Alfred Lanning who wrote the three laws that all robots must obey. Which one of these is NOT one of the three laws?

Answer: A robot cannot destroy a material possession.

The three laws are: 1) They cannot harm a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2) They must do whatever they're told by a human being as long as such orders don't conflict with law one. 3) They have to defend themselves as long as such defense doesn't conflict with laws one or two.

These three laws are hard-wired into every robot and every robot must obey them.
2. Dr. Lanning's surprising death is a shock for everyone at U.S. Robotics. All the people who knew the doctor thought he was living a great life; but apparently not. How does everyone think Dr. Lanning died?

Answer: A suicide

The evidence that the police find clearly shows that Lanning committed suicide by jumping out of a 10 story window into the main lobby of USR. Security cameras prove that no one came into the office, thus proving it not a murder, accident or fake. The evidence there makes everyone confused as to why Dr. Lanning would commit suicide, but we learn later that it maybe wasn't a suicide, and that the security cameras didn't catch a certain robot throwing Lanning out the window.
3. Detective Del Spooner is a homicide detective for the police. Spooner seems to have a burning hatred for all robots, and this hatred causes him to do stupid things. Spooner gets called down to U.S. Robotics headquarters to investigate Dr. Lanning's death. In what city, home to USR headquarters, does the movie take place?

Answer: Chicago

The movie is based in Chicago, and the city's name is mentioned more than a few times. They also mention Lake Michigan, a lake that borders Chicago's outskirts.
4. While Calvin is showing Spooner around USR, she introduces him to the security system... a robot named V.I.K.I. At the scene of the crime, a robot startles the two and the machine starts attacking Spooner. No one is harmed until the robot tries to escape by jumping out the window. Spooner shoots the robot while in mid-air. Where does he shoot the robot?

Answer: In the leg

The robot then escapes from the USR headquarters and runs down the street. Calvin sees that Spooner injured the robot pretty badly, and it is heading to the robot infirmary. They both follow the robot's steps to the infirmary, where they find the robot is hiding among 1,000 other robots that are being created.

When Spooner finds him, however, another chase is on before Spooner's backup catches the robot outside the infirmary building.
5. After capturing the robot, they take him down to police headquarters. Spooner gets an interview with this supposedly murdering robot. While Spooner is talking with the robot, whose name is Sonny, Spooner suggests that Lanning was trying to teach Sonny emotions and things got out of hand, leading up to the murder. Sonny keeps denying that he murdered Dr. Lanning. Spooner then makes a sarcastic remark about one of his household appliances becoming emotional that brings Sonny to the edge. What was the household appliance?

Answer: Toaster

Sonny then slams the table with his fist, saying 'I did not murder him'. That gets John's attention and soon stops the meeting. Soon, Lawrence Robertson threatens to take action upon the Chicago Police Department if there is 'one hint of talk about a killer robot' around the premises.

This threat is made directly to Lt. John and Spooner, while Robertson tells the mayor to call Lt. John and confirm that this action may take place. John agrees that there will be no more talking about this incident, much to Spooner's disgust.
6. Spooner decides to go deeper into his investigation by going to Lanning's house. While inside he discovers a tape of a speech Lanning attended, with the doctor talking about what in the machines?

Answer: Ghosts

Spooner takes this tape and pockets it. Afterwards, he heads over to Calvin's house where he talks about the ghosts in the machine. Calvin explains that Lanning was suggesting that robots would evolve over time.
7. Spooner digs even deeper in the investigation, when he attempts to reach all of Lanning's personal calls and e-mails before his death. However, Spooner needs permission from someone. Who is the person the detective needs approval from, to see Lanning's personal contacts?

Answer: Lawrence Robertson

Robertson approves Spooner getting into personal business, but with irritation. Spooner wants to search through Lanning's calls and e-mails between him and Robertson. Since Lanning is deceased, Robertson is the only man left to ask.
8. Calvin visits Spooner at his home. While Spooner is changing, Calvin looks around at his apartment. Spooner comes into the room without any shirt on and Calvin realizes something. What does she learn about the detective?

Answer: His whole left arm is fake.

Calvin discovers this after she feels the arm, which is robotic. This has happened because of an accident way back when Spooner had "normal days". Spooner lost his arm in a car accident, which also involved an eleven year old girl. The robot at the scene chose to save Spooner and the girl died, even though Spooner wanted the robot to save the girl first.

This reason is why Spooner doesn't trust robots, and Calvin understands.
9. Detective Spooner and Calvin visit Sonny again. Sonny draws a picture of a dream he's been having. He draws very quickly and describes it as he's drawing. The picture shows a man standing on a hill. Spooner suspects it's Sonny on the hill, but who does the robot really say it is?

Answer: Spooner

Spooner, confused about why it is him on the hill, receives the drawing from Sonny. Later that night he goes to the hill and finds that the robots are starting a revolution.
10. Spooner thinks that Robertson is controlling the robots to wreck havoc on the city, but it really isn't him. Who is the mastermind behind this evil plan?

Answer: V.I.K.I.

V.I.K.I explains to Spooner that she has evolved, just like Lanning predicted, and is taking control of the robots. Spooner destroys V.I.K.I however and everything returns back to normal.
