Answer: To disband Robert's dying father's corporation

According to Saito, Robert's father's company was a very powerful company that dominated more than half of the world's energy supply. Robert's father was very ill and he was lying on his deathbed. Saito thought that Robert's father's company was his business rival, so it was in his best interest if he could "ask" Robert to somehow dismantle his father's empire. So, Saito asked Dom to do him the favor, simply by "inserting" a simple idea into Robert's mind.

Dom's totem was a top. Throughout the movie, Dom spun his top almost every time he woke up from his dream. The top would spin steadily and never fall down if he was dreaming. On the other hand, the top would topple eventually if he was awake. The spinning top was Mal's idea.

She used it to keep track of her dream and reality. Arthur's totem was a red die. Ariadne made her own totem, which was a hollowed chess piece. At the end of the movie, Dom arrived at his home in the US. After spinning his top, he rushed to greet his two children, James and Phillipa.

As the camera zoomed out, the last scene featured the spinning top which began to wobble.

The first layer of the dream happened inside Yusuf's mind. Dom knew Robert needed a taxi so he appointed Arthur to hijack one. Once they had Robert in the car, they brought him to a warehouse. Dom was in another car. As he fetched Ariadne, a massive train showed up in the city.

The team members knew that the gunmen were from Robert's subconscious to protect his secret from being extracted. However, only Ariadne knew that the train was from Dom's subconscious, because she had seen the same train in Dom's memory before.

The second layer of the dream happened inside Arthur's mind. The team members gathered in a hotel room and everyone had their wrists connected to a special device that enabled them to share a dream. Arthur stayed back and pushed the button. Unexpectedly, he also fought and defeated a bad guy in the zero-gravity fight scene.

Dom and Ariadne were watching Robert from afar as he made his way to meet his father. Dom's deceased wife, Mal kept haunting Dom's subconscious and she showed up unexpectedly. Dom wanted to kill Mal but he hesitated. It was too late because Mal had pulled the trigger and Robert was dead.

Saito died in the third level of the dream. Previously, he was shot by a gunman in the first layer of the dream during the ambush. When he died, he did not wake up from his dream. Instead, he went to the limbo state because Yusuf had used a stronger sedative for the mission. Dom found Saito, who was a very old man now. Dom convinced Saito that they were in the limbo state and they needed to go back to reality. James and Phillipa were Dom's children while Miles was Dom's father-in-law.

Answer: To go back to the first layer of the dream, Arthur pushed everyone into a swimming pool.

In the fourth level of the dream or limbo, both Ariadne and Robert jumped off a tall building, which provided them the kick to go back to the third layer of the dream. On the other hand, Dom and Saito shot themselves with gun. In the third level of the dream, Eames put many explosives at the supports of the fortress.

He then blew up the fortress and everyone was back at level two of the dream. In level two of the dream, Arthur put everyone into a lift and simulated a free fall by using explosives.

In level one of the dream, Yusuf attempted the first kick by driving his van off the bridge but the timing was not right and it failed. The second kick succeeded, when the van hit the water.

In the first scene of the movie, Dom was washed up on a beach. He saw his two children, James and Phillipa playing on the beach. Those were only his projections (memories from his subconscious). In the second layer of the dream, when Dom was escorting Robert in his mission, he also caught a glimpse of his two children in the hotel.

In another scene, Mal wanted Dom to look at their children, but Dom refused because he knew those were only his projections. The very last scene of the movie showed Dom finally arriving in the US.

He was greeted by his father-in-law, Miles, who brought him back to his home. At home, he spun his top again, but he got distracted and went to greet his children. He finally saw the faces of his two children, James and Phillipa.

Dom and Ariadne traveled to the fourth layer of the dream. They met Mal there in a very modern apartment. Dom emotionally admitted to Mal that while they were both in the limbo state, Dom knew something was not right. It was just a matter of time before Dom realized the situation. To get them out of the limbo state, Dom knew he had to persuade Mal to kill herself so that she could wake up from her dream. Through inception, Dom succeeded in implanting the idea into Mal's mind. Mal woke up, but she could not differentiate between dream and reality. Even though she was in the real world, she believed and perceived that the world she lived in was still in her dream so she tried to kill herself again by jumping off the hotel. Dom felt very guilty because of this.

This quote was first said by Mal when she met Ariadne in the hotel room. Mal told Ariadne that it was a riddle. Mal repeated this quote before she committed suicide by jumping off the hotel building. Dom tried very hard to convince her not to jump but he couldn't stop her.

This quote was also said by both Dom and Mal when they killed themselves by getting hit by a train while they were in the limbo state. They did this so that they could wake up from their dream.
