Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the start of the film SS Colonel Hans Landa, played by Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, visited Perrier LaPadite's family to investigate the whereabouts of the Dreyfus family. Why was the conversation between Colonel Landa and Mr. LaPadite in both French and English?

Answer: The Dreyfus family didn't speak/understand English

Landa offered Mr. LaPadite a deal whereby he disclosed the Dreyfus' location and the SS would no longer bother his family for the duration of the war. Landa spoke in English so that Mr. LaPadite could disclose this information without the Dreyfus family (who were hiding under the floorboards) being aware of his betrayal. Landa later spoke French to give the false impression of his departure while his soldiers entered to mercilessly shoot the home's floorboards; only one member of the family, Shosanna, survived. Throughout the film Hans Landa was shown speaking 4 different languages: German, French, English, and Italian.
2. Lieutenant Aldo Raine, played by Brad Pitt, said that his ethnic background was part Native American. He was called 'Aldo the _____' and his crew's battle plan was that of a(n) _______ resistance. What Native American tribe did Aldo and his men affiliate themselves with?

Answer: Apache

Aldo's life before the war involved the illegal production of moonshine liquor in the mountains of Tennessee. Many of 'the Basterds' and other characters in the film had nicknames because of their wartime exploits; Colonel Hans Landa was referred to as 'the Jew hunter' and even Private Utivich (played by BJ Novak) was known by German soldiers as 'the little man,' a title he was very disappointed to discover.
3. Sargent Donny Donowitz, played by Eli Roth, was known for savagely beating Nazi soldiers to death with a baseball bat. His brutality earned him the nickname "the _________ Jew"; what was Donny's nickname?

Answer: Bear

The first appearance of Sgt. Donowitz was quite frightening, as his introduction was almost excruciatingly long. A Nazi officer that refused to disclose information was kneeling in the dirt and had to listen to Sgt. Donowitz walk out from a deep tunnel while he tapped a baseball bat against the metal frame with every step he took.
4. One member of 'the Basterds' was a German enlisted soldier that had killed 13 Gestapo officers. 'The Basterds' sought him out while he was in military prison and asked him if he wanted to 'go pro' as a Nazi killer. Everyone in the German army had heard of him, but what was this man's name?

Answer: Hugo Stiglitz

Tarantino knows how to craft an incredible 'sales pitch' scene in his films, as can be seen in his section of 'Four Rooms' and in 'Pulp Fiction.' Aldo's pitch was as follows: "We're a big fan of your work...when it comes to killing Nazis. I think you show great talent...and I pride myself on having an eye for that kind of talent...But your status as a Nazi killer is still amateur, and we all have come here to see if you want to go pro." Hugo didn't speak much throughout the film, but his exploits as a Nazi killer were shown in an extremely violent montage that vividly illustrated the variety of ways he chose to kill the Gestapo.

While he seemed like a very nice person if you were not a Nazi, he was killed in the brawl at the basement bar in Nadine, along with Archie and Wilhelm.
5. Fredrick Zoller's persistence lead Joseph Goebbels to choose Shosanna's theater for the gala premiere of his new 'epic' propaganda film. The film starred Fredrick and was all about the four days that Fredrick spent in a bird's nest killing Allied soldiers. What was the name of this movie?

Answer: Nation's Pride

The film caught up with Shosanna in Paris, 1944, when she was operating a movie theater and happened to catch the attention of Fredrick Zoller, whom she told that her name was 'Emmanuelle Mimieux.' She ran into Fredrick again at a cafe and then she discovered his status as a 'war hero;' while he was in the bell tower he killed 68 soldiers the first day, 150 the second day, and 32 on the third day before they left the area on the fourth day. No matter what she did, Shosanna couldn't seem to get away from Fredrick.
6. Shosanna's plan to burn down the theater on 'Nazi night' involved burning hundreds of highly flammable film reels made of what material?

Answer: nitrate

Like most Tarantino films, Shosanna's plan was described by the narrator, who disclosed that 35mm nitrate film was "so flammable that you couldn't even bring a reel on a streetcar." Nitrate film burned three times faster than paper
and Shosanna happened to have a collection of over 350 nitrate films.
7. British Lieutenant Archie Hicox was selected to work alongside 'the Basterds' because he was fluent in German and his profession before the war provided him considerable knowledge about Germany and their culture. What was Archie's profession before the war?

Answer: film critic

British Lt. Archie Hicox met with Winston Churchill and British General Ed Fenech to discuss his upcoming role in the plot to kill Hitler at the film premiere. Before the war, Archie worked as a film critic for a publication called 'Films and Filmmakers;' Archie had also published two books, both of which related to German cinema and German filmmakers.

In fact, Archie's knowledge of the German film 'Piz Palü' was crucial when German soldiers later told him that they couldn't place his unusual accent; his knowledge of the film allowed him to create a believable story that would be difficult to question by those unfamiliar with this small village.
8. The German officer in the pub wanted Bridget, Archie, Hugo, and Wilhelm to join him in a round of a game. Each person had to guess the identity of the famous person/character that was written on the card attached to their forehead. The German officer was the only person that played and he eventually guessed his character correctly, but who was written on his card?

Answer: King Kong

Based upon the questions he was asked, the officer deduced the following about his character: they were brought to America against their will; someone else profited off of them; they came from an exotic homeland/jungle; they were brought to America on a boat, in chains, and were displayed in chains when they arrived.

The officer first guessed that he was "the story of the Negro in America," and once he found out he was incorrect, he said, "Well, then I must be King Kong." This entire line of questioning and resulting guess relating to America's history of slavery was very provocative and the many connections between the fundamentals of each narrative were quite surprising.
9. While Archie and Bridget were able to convince the German officer of the origins of Archie's strange accent, Archie ended up making a fatal error that exposed himself to be a Nazi impostor. What did he do to wrong?

Answer: made the wrong hand gesture for the number '3'

Archie raised his ring, index, and middle finger when he ordered '3 drinks.' Evidently, in Germany, the number three is gestured by using the thumb, index, and middle finger. Bridget explained this to Aldo after her rescue and she said that Archie's way of gesturing was considered strange in Germany, and thus would definitely stand out.
10. British General Ed Fenech (played by Mike Myers) explained that the gala would "have all of our rotten eggs in one basket...the objective is to blow up the basket." This operation was designed to have Archie, Bridget, and 'the Basterds' infiltrate the gala premiere, strapped with dynamite, and blow up all of the high powered Nazi officers. What was the name of this operation?

Answer: Kino

Fredrick Zoller made the plans of 'the Basterds,' the OSS, and Shosanna all come to their full fruition. The smaller theater was the ideal setting for everyone's plans, and even though neither Shosanna, nor 'the Basterds,' knew of each others' plans, there was no way that Hitler and Goebbels would have escaped alive.
11. After the destruction at the pub in Nadine, Colonel Landa was sent to investigate what had occurred and to determine who may have been responsible. When he was there he found a woman's shoe and realized that she had been there during the massacre but was able to get away; what did he find that identified the missing woman as Bridget von Hammersmark?

Answer: autographed napkin

Bridget had signed her name and kissed a napkin for the newborn son of the drunken German soldier in the bar; besides herself, he was the last man standing until 'the Basterds' shot him. Colonel Landa caught up with Bridget at the gala premiere and ushered her away for a 'private conversation' just before the film began.

He made her put her foot on his knee and he proceeded to put the shoe he had found on her foot, somewhat like the story of 'Cinderella'. Landa then lunged at her, grabbed her throat, and choked her to death in Shosanna's office.
12. Since the rendezvous at the bar went horribly wrong, 'the Basterds' needed to come up with another plan to get themselves into the theater. Bridget asked if any of them spoke any other languages, and they eventually decided to pose as film executives from what European nation?

Answer: Italy

Lt. Aldo Raine, Sgt. Donny Donowitz, and PFC Omar Ulmer all posed as Frau von Hammersmark's Italian escorts, but their Italian language skills were remarkably limiting and/or hilariously poor (especially in the case of Aldo). Aldo was intercepted after Landa's altercation with Bridget and was taken away with PFC Utivich to have a private discussion with the colonel.
13. Hitler and Goebbels were both shot to death by Donny and Omar in the theater.

Answer: True

Unlike all of those historically accurate WWII films out there, this movie actually has Hitler and Goebbels gunned down and killed by two of 'the Basterds.' In fact, their death involved quite a bit of overkill, as Donny continued to shoot both of their bodies dozens of times after they were already dead. Donny and Omar also shot at the crowd that was frantically trying to open the doors and escape the fire's fury.
14. Colonel Hans Landa wanted to make a deal with the American government to end the war and start a new life in the USA. Which of the following was NOT one of his conditions?

Answer: that he receive a parade in his honor for toppling the Third Reich

Landa wanted the history books to report that he was involved with Operation Kino from the very beginning as a double agent and that any of his wrongdoings with the SS were sanctioned by the OSS as necessary in order for him to establish himself within the German military's infrastructure.

He also wanted people to know that it was his strategic placement of Aldo's dynamite that killed both Hitler and Goebbels; however, Hitler and Goebbels were already dead by the time that the dynamite exploded.
15. 'The Basterds' wanted to know when they were staring at a Nazi and they knew that this would be much more difficult after the war was over and these soldiers took off their uniforms. What did they carve into the forehead of all the soldiers that lived to speak of their encounter with 'the Basterds?'

Answer: swastika

Aldo was shown carving it into the forehead of a German soldier at the beginning of the film and he was complimented by Donny for his abilities to do so. It was when he carved the swastika into Hans Landa's forehead at the end that he delivered the film's final line: "You know something? This just may be my masterpiece."
