Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In roughly chronological order, our first question is about the ancient Sith. Thousands of years before "A New Hope" happened, who became the first Lord of the Sith?

Answer: Ajunta Pall

All four of these answers were Sith Lords with tombs in the Valley of the Dark Lords on the planet Korriban. This location was visited by the player character in the 2003 video game "Knights of the Old Republic".

The Sith were originally a unique species, native to Korriban. Dark Jedi found the planet, subjugated the native Sith, and the Sith society associated with the Dark Side of the Force was born. Ajunta Pall was the leader of the Dark Jedi when Korriban was discovered, and soon became the first Sith Lord.

Ajunta Pall was eventually followed by Tulak Hord, then Marka Ragnos, and finally Naga Sadow. Many more Sith Lords would come later.
2. Nearly 4000 years before the movies took place, the Jedi Civil War was raging. The conclusion of this epic struggle was depicted in the video game "Knights of the Old Republic", released by Bioware in 2003. What was the name of the Dark Jedi who led his followers away from the Jedi and the Republic, and started a new Sith Empire?

Answer: Darth Revan

In ancient "Star Wars" history, there was a conflict between the Republic and the Mandalorians. The Jedi decided to stay out of the fight, and Republic citizens were being slaughtered. One Jedi, Revan, decided to help the Republic without the approval of the Jedi Council. Many Jedi followed Revan, and the Mandalorian Wars were won.

Instead of returning to Coruscant, Revan chased the Mandalorians into the Unknown Regions. There, he found the Star Forge, and started a new Sith Empire. He returned to Republic Space as Darth Revan, along with his apprentice, Darth Malak, and began the Jedi Civil War.

The Jedi Civil War was ended in "Knights of the Old Republic". Darth Nihilus and Darth Traya were antagonists in the sequel, "Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords", released by Obsidian Entertainment in 2005.
3. The early Sith had large armies and empires, but would often be plagued by infighting, and could not withstand the Republic and its Jedi. One Sith created a new philosophhy: the Rule of Two. There should only ever be two Sith, a master and an apprentice. Who created the Rule of Two?

Answer: Darth Bane

Darth Bane lived about 1000 years before the movies took place. He joined the Sith Brotherhood, and was trained by many masters in the ways of the Force. Bane even learned from the holocron of Darth Revan. He was strong and cunning, but grew disillusioned with the Sith Brotherhood. He used his knowledge of the Brotherhood to destroy it, and began a new line of Sith.

The new line of Sith would follow the Rule of Two. Only two Sith Lords would exist at the same time. One with power, and the other to seek it. It was expected that the apprentice would ascend and become the master when they were strong enough to kill their own master. After becoming a Master of the Dark Side, they would take on a new apprentice, and repeat the cycle.

This cycle would continue until the movies, with Emperor Palpatine as the master, and Darth Vader as the apprentice.

Darth Bane's story was covered by a series of novels by Drew Karpyshyn, who was also a lead writer for the "Knights of the Old Republic" video game.

For the incorrect answers, Freedon Nadd was another ancient Dark Lord of the Sith. Darth Malgus was a key player during the Cold War, depicted in the 2011 video game "The Old Republic", which took place 300 years after "Knights of the Old Republic". Darth Plagueis was the Sith Master who trained Darth Sidious, who would go on to create the Galactic Empire in "Revenge of the Sith".
4. During the Clone Wars, twenty years before "A New Hope", Dark Jedi were employed by the Confederacy against the Republic. Count Dooku, despite technically being an apprentice himself to Darth Sidious, started training his own apprentices. Which of Dooku's apprentices was a bald woman who was famously dangerous when wielding two lightsabers at once?

Answer: Assaj Ventress

Assaj Ventress appeared in many stories set during the Clone Wars. She appeared in novels, comics, video games, and two TV shows. She appeared in the animated "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" movie, but never appeared in a live action capacity. Assaj Ventress was a high ranking leader in the Confederacy. Usually she would play the role of assassin, and attempt to eliminate Jedi, but she was also used on diplomatic missions, and led droid armies.

Aura Sing was a bounty hunter with some Force sensitivity. She was hired by the Confederacy, but was never an apprentice to Dooku. She made an appearance in "The Phantom Menace" during the pod race.

Cydon Prax was another bounty hunter hired by the Confederacy during the Clone Wars. He was not Force sensitive, but was a difficult opponent for the Jedi. He appeared in the 2002 video game "The Clone Wars".

Sev'rance Tann was a Chiss woman who was trained by Count Dooku and also active during the Clone Wars. She only appeared in the 2002 video game "Galactic Battlegrounds: Clone Campaigns".
5. Darth Vader was an apprentice to Darth Sidious, but even he started training his own apprentice in secret. What was the name of Darth Vader's apprentice, the playable character in the 2010 video game, "The Force Unleashed"?

Answer: Mareek Starkiller

"The Force Unleashed" was a multimedia project released in 2008. It followed the story of Mareek Starkiller, the secret apprentice of Darth Vader. Because Vader was still an apprentice himself, this technically broke the Rule of Two, so Vader kept Starkiller hidden from the emperor. When the emperor found out, Vader betrayed his apprentice. Starkiller survived, and ended up helping found the Rebellion.

Dash Rendar was a smuggler remarkably similar to Han Solo. He played a major role during the "Shadows of the Empire" multimedia project, which took place between "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi", when Han Solo was frozen in carbonite.

Jaden Korr and Rosh Penin were both students at Luke Skywalker's Jedi Academy, seen in the 2003 video game "Jedi Academy".

Starkiller was the original last name for Luke in drafts for "A New Hope". Starkiller was used to name the super weapon in "The Force Awakens".
6. The "Dark Forces" series of video games followed protagonist Kyle Katarn. In the second game, "Jedi Knight", he discovered his latent Force sensitivity and was tasked with defending the Valley of the Jedi from the Sith. Who was leading the Sith and trying to absorb the power from the Valley of the Jedi?

Answer: Jerec

"Dark Forces" was a video game released in 1995, and was much like a "Star Wars" version of the video game "Doom", but with added features. It followed mercenary Kyle Katarn, who was hired by the Rebellion. In the 1997 sequel, "Jedi Knight", the developers added lightsabers and Force powers. Protagonist Kyle Katarn had to solve a mystery, and fight multiple Dark Jedi, ending with the leader, Jerec.

"Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast" was released in 2002, with the Dark Jedi Dasann as the main antagonist. In 2003, "Jedi Academy" was released. In "Jedi Academy", players took on the role or Jaden Korr, who was Kyle's apprentice. They would fight Tavion Axmis, Dasann's apprentice, and Alora, the new apprentice of Tavion.
7. The Rule of Two said that there would be only two true Sith. It did not put any limit on those trained in the ways of the Dark Side. Emperor Palpatine's apprentice was Darth Vader, but he also had other agents trained. Which of the Emperor's agents was known as The Emperor's Hand, and would eventually marry Luke Skywalker?

Answer: Mara Jade

Mara Jade was introduced in the 1991 "Thrawn" Trilogy, by Timothy Zahn. She instantly became a fan favourite, and appeared in subsequent media. During the Galactic Civil War, she was an agent for the emperor, performing clandestine operations and assassinations. She was sensitive to the Force, and trained to use it to help her complete her missions. She was never a true apprentice or Sith, though. Her final target was Luke Skywalker, but she did not complete the mission before the emperor was killed at the Battle of Endor.

Mara Jade hated Luke, but was forced to rely upon him to survive. As the two worked together, her anger dissipated. It would be a very long transformation, but she would eventually grow closer to Luke, and they were married fifteen years after the Battle of Endor.

Gaeriel Captison and Callista Masana were both early romantic interests for Luke, after the Battle of Endor. Vestara Khai was a young Sith woman who became attached to Ben Skywalker, the son of Luke and Mara Jade.
8. Eleven years after "A New Hope" happened, Luke was becoming stronger in the Force, and decided to open a new Jedi Academy to rebuild the order, as seen in the 1994 "Jedi Academy" trilogy novels. He decided to build the academy in the old Rebel base on Yavin IV, but this had some unforseen consequences. The malevolent spirit of which long-dead Sith started corrupting Luke's new students?

Answer: Exar Kun

The "Jedi Academy" trilogy of novels were written by Kevin J. Anderson, and published in 1994. They told the story of Luke Skywalker setting up a new Jedi Academy on Yavin IV, in the old Rebel base from "A New Hope". At the same time, Anderson worked on the "Tales of the Jedi" comic series, which took place thousands of years before the movies.

"Tales of the Jedi" told the story of Ulec Qel-Droma and Exar Kun. Both were Jedi Knights who fell to the Dark Side. Exar Kun went to Yavin IV, enslaved and corrupted the native population, and had them construct new temples steeped in the Dark Side. He later died on Yavin IV, but was able to preserve his spirit within his temples.

When Luke brought new, Force-sensitive students to Yavin IV, Exar Kun sought out Gantoris, who was ambitious, and lacked patience. Exar Kun eventually killed Gantoris when the student resisted, and moved on to influence Kyp Durron. Durron was also a newly discovered young Force sensitive. He rejected Kun's promises of power, and went on to be a major character in later "Star Wars" media. Exar Kun's spirit was banished for good by the combined efforts of Luke's new Jedi students.
9. Forty years after "A New Hope", the second Galactic Civil War broke out, depicted in the nine novel series "Legacy of the Force". While this series depicts an epic struggle, both militarily and politically, the arc ultimately follows the rise and fall of Darth Caedus. Who was Caedus before becoming a Lord of the Sith?

Answer: Jacen Solo

In the "Legends" timeline (the timeline before Disney reset everything), Han Solo and Leia Organa had three children. Jacen and Jaina were twins, born five years after "Return of the Jedi". Anakin Solo was born a year later. Luke and Mara Jade Skywalker had their only son, Ben, during the Yuuzhang Vong invasion.

Anakin Solo, at sixteen, died during the Yuuzhan Vong war. After the war, Jacen Solo went on a personal, spiritual journey, and became one of the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy. His cousin, Ben, was even his apprentice for a while. Jacen sought to fix the galaxy, and slowly slipped toward to the Dark Side. During the Second Civil War, he took the name Darth Caedus. He was killed by his own twin sister, Jaina, at the end of the war.
10. The farthest "Star Wars" ever got, before Disney acquired it, was 140 years after "A New Hope", with the "Legacy" comic series. In the series, the descendants of Anakin Skywalker were still trying to hold the galaxy together, and had to fight an ancient Sith Lord. What was the name of the Sith Lord who usurped the throne of the Empire, and fought Cade Skywalker?

Answer: Darth Krayt

Very few people knew that Darth Krayt was A'Sharad Hett, who had been alive since the Clone Wars. Hett appeared in a few comics set during the Clone Wars, and did not have the best luck. During the Yuuzhan Vong war, Hett fell to the Dark Side, and took the name Darth Krayt. He prolonged his life by tapping into the Dark Side of the Force, built up a new following of Sith in secret, and manipulated galactic events for a hundred years to secure his rise to power.

Lumiya was a character originally introduced in the old Marvel "Star Wars" comics. She later became Jacen Solo's teacher, pulling him to the Dark Side during the "Legacy of the Force" novel series.

Abeloth was the main antagonist during the "Fate of the Jedi" novel series. She was a strange creation of the Force, and tied to the characters from the "Mortis" series of episodes of "The Clone Wars" TV series.

Emperor Fel was the leader of the Empire during the "Legacy" comic series. He was a descendant of Jaina Solo, and could use the Force.
