Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who plays Anne Elliot in this film?

Answer: Amanda Root

Amanda Root was born in Essex, England in 1963. "Persuasion" was her first leading role in a film. A regular on such British television series as "Rose and Maloney", "A Touch of Frost", and "The Robinsons", you might also recognize her from her role as Winifred Dartie in "The Forsyte Saga". Miss Root has also belonged to the Royal Shakespeare Company.
2. What are Mary and Anne doing when Anne sees Captain Wentworth after almost eight years?

Answer: Having breakfast

It is the morning after the dinner at the Great House. Mary meets Captain Wentworth for the first time there. Anne did not go to the dinner, instead staying home to nurse little Charles who had fallen out of a tree. Captain Wentworth stops in with the Musgrove sisters on the way to shooting, ostensibly to check on little Charles.

When Captain Wentworth comes into the breakfast room, Mary (not ever having known Anne and Captain Wentworth's history) introduces him to Anne. Anne can barely speak she is so affected, but Captain Wentworth is stiffly formal to her, and quickly exits the room.
3. This film is set in 1814. Captain Wentworth's sister and brother-in-law let Kellynch Hall. Who plays Captain Wentworth?

Answer: Ciaran Hinds

Ciaran Hinds is a fantastic Captain Wentworth. He and Amanda Root have excellent chemistry on film. Mr. Hinds was born in 1953 in Belfast. He has a large body of work in televison, film and theatre and has been a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
4. Where does Anne first see her cousin Mr. Elliot?

Answer: At Lyme

During a walk at Lyme, Mr. Elliot and Anne don't know each other, but do notice one another. They pass each other on the Cobb and he doffs his hat and watches after her in an admiring manner. A little later, she is in the hotel and they almost bump into each other. Again, he watches after her, not knowing who she is, but keenly interested.
5. Why do the characters travel to Lyme?

Answer: To see Captain Harville and his family

Captain Harville, his family and Captain Benwick are at Lyme. Both Harville and Benwick served with Wentworth in the Royal Navy. Captain Harville writes Captain Wentworth and Wentworth decides to visit him. He invites Charles Musgrove, his wife Mary, Louisa and Henrietta along. Louisa asks if they can bring Anne as well.
6. During the long walk, who says to Captain Wentworth, "If I loved a man as she does the Admiral, I would rather be overturned by him than be driven safely by someone else!"?

Answer: Louisa

On the long walk, Captain Wentworth and Louisa have a nice chat. Captain Wentworth wonders aloud how quickly the the Admiral will overturn the gig while he and his wife (Wentworth's sister) are out riding. Wentworth responds, "Fine words, Louisa", because he is impressed with her determination to go her own way.

She is a foil to Anne, who broke his heart eight years previously, because she was persuaded not to marry him in spite of loving him.
7. What are the characters doing when Henry Hayter comes to the Great House and immediately becomes upset and leaves?

Answer: Dancing

Everyone is dancing and Henrietta, whom Mr. Hayter loves, happens to be partnered with Captain Wentworth. She is laughing as Captain Wentworth swings her round in circles just as Hayter walks in. He turns and leaves in a jealous fit. As an aside, in the novel Mr. Hayter's name is Charles, just as Mr. Musgrove's is. I can only suppose his name was changed to Henry for the film to keep it simple.
8. What is the instrument Henrietta plays for her family (Mrs. Musgrove wants to know why her spinet should make way for it)?

Answer: The Harp

Henrietta's mother good naturedly asks what is wrong with her old spinet that it must make way for 'that great noisy article', Henrietta's new harp.
9. While visiting the Great House, Anne is accosted first by one and then another of the family. In turns they take her aside to tell her their woes about each other. Mrs. Musgrove complains that Charles and Mary's children can only be made to behave by giving them more of something than is good for them. What does she have to give them?

Answer: Cake

Mrs. Musgrove feels she must give her grandchildren lots of cake to make them behave. Somehow she feels this must be Mary's fault. Mary in turn tells Anne that she's quite tired of Mrs. Musgrove stuffing the children full of cake!
10. What is the language that Anne translates for Mr. Elliot, at the concert in the Assembly Rooms at Bath?

Answer: Italian

The concert programme is written in Italian, which Mr. Elliot does not read. He flatters her knowledge of Italian and Anne responds that she really isn't very good and would hate to be tested on her skill.
