Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Yuen Biao played the character Leung Foon in the first "Once Upon a Time in China" movie. He was replaced by which actor for the rest of the "Once" series?

Answer: Mok Siu-chung

Mok Siu-chung was born in Hong Kong, 1960, and has appeared in over 70 movies. He was recruited by the Shaw Bros Studios and his first debut was in the 1983 "The Enchantress".

His most famous role is of course playing Leung Foon in Parts 2-5 of the "Once Upon a Time in China" series.
2. Hong Kong comedian Stephen Chow ("Kung Fu Hustle", "Shaolin Soccer") has NEVER appeared in a Jet Li movie.

Answer: False

Stephen Chow Sing-chi starred alongside Jet Li in the 1989 movie "Dragon Fight".

Stephen Chow was still a television actor then, and did not become hugely famous until his 1990 movie "All For The Winner", where he showcased his nonsense style of comedy (known as "Mo Lei Tau"). He went from strength to strength, starring in some of Hong Kong's biggest box office movies in the '90s such as "Fight Back to School", "God of Gamblers 2", "Flirting Scholar", "The Royal Tramp", and "A Chinese Odyssey".

Western viewers may remember him well in "Shaolin Soccer" and "Kung Fu Hustle".

He is also the director of "Journey to the West" (2013) and "The Mermaid" (2016), two hugely successful movies filmed in China in which he did not appear.
3. Veteran martial artist Collin Chou made numerous appearances in Jet Li's movies usually as a bad guy. In which movie did he play Jet Li's father?

Answer: Fearless

Collin Chou played a good guy in "Fearless", where he portrayed the father of the young Huo Yuan-jia (Fok Yuen-gap).

In the movie, Huo becomes a fearsome fighter, winning every single fight he participates in. He becomes reckless and egotistic, eventually causing his own downfall by killing another martial artist who has no quarrel with him. Huo goes into hiding and learns the true nature of martial arts in a remote village. He comes back to participate in fights against foreigners, and to spread the true message of learning martial arts to the masses.

Collin Chou is a Taiwanese martial artist. During his early years in the business he was known by his stage name Ngai Sing, and appeared in numerous martial arts movies in the 1990s and 2000s, usually playing the bad guy.

In the West, he is best known for his role as Seraph in "Matrix Reloaded" and "Matrix Revolutions" movies.
4. How did Huo Yuan-jia (Fok Yuen-gap) die in the movie "Fearless"?

Answer: He was poisoned.

In the movie, whilst Huo was sparring with the Japanese warrior, his tea was swapped with one laced with poison. At an interval, Huo drank the poisoned tea, and when he continued his fight with the Japanese, the poison took effect, and Huo died on stage, much to the shock and horror of the Japanese warrior.

Huo Yuan-jia (1868-1910) was a real life Chinese martial arts practitioner who co-founded the Chin Woo Athletic Association in Shanghai, and was known to be a Chinese patriot. His fame came from his fights with Western boxers who mocked the Chinese for being the "Weak Men of the East". These fights could not be verified, so some historians claim that these fights were just stories told to bolster Chinese confidence at the time.

He died in 1910 aged just 42 due to arsenic poisoning. Many have speculated whether the Japanese had poisoned Huo, but this again cannot be verified. Some have said Huo was poisoned by the medicine he was taking for his ill health.

Nevertheless, Huo's legacy remains to this day as the Chin Woo Association is one of the largest Wushu organisations in the world.
5. "The Warlords" was set in which Chinese dynasty?

Answer: Qing

One easy and surefire way to know if a Chinese movie is set in the Qing dynasty (1644-1912) is to look at the hairstyle of the men. If they are wearing a "queue" (pigtail) with usually the front portion of the head shaved, then it is the Qing dynasty. This is because when the Manchus conquered China proper, they forced the Han people of China to adopt their hairstyle. Those who resisted were all executed. In the other dynasties, the men did not wear this queue.

Revolutionaries in the early 1900s cut off their queue as a sign of rebellion. When the Qing regime fell in 1912, many people resisted having their queue cut off, but the new government forced them to.
6. What kind of business opened next to Wong Fei-hung's martial arts school in "The Last Hero in China"?

Answer: A brothel

In the movie Wong needs a new place to set up his school because his old school has become too small for his growing number of students. He meets a fan of his who offers to rent him a suitable place. Wong agrees and moves in. At the opening day, Wong finds out that his landlord has also opened a business right next door to his. But the business is a brothel, much to Wong's embarrassment.
7. Who portrayed Jet Li's nemesis in "Romeo Must Die"?

Answer: Russell Wong

Russell Wong plays Kai, a right hand man to a powerful Chinese triad boss in California. On orders of the boss, he kills the boss's son and frames a local gang leader for the deed. Jet Li, who is also the boss's other son, finds out that his father had his own son murdered.

Russell Wong was born in New York, 1963, and is the brother to Hong Kong actor Michael Wong. Unlike his brother, Russell decided to stay in the US for his movie career and has appeared in numerous movies such as "Taipan", "The Joy Luck Club", "The Vanishing Son" series, and reuniting with Jet Li in "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor".
8. In the opening of "Flying Swords of Dragon Gate" Jet Li's character fought and killed which veteran Shaw Bros actor?

Answer: Gordon Liu Chia-hui (Lau Kar-fai)

Gordon Liu (aka Lau Kar-fai) is one of Hong Kong's most famous martial artists/actors. His portrayal of San Te in "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin" catapulted him into a leading actor. His subsequent movies has cemented him into one of Hong Kong's greatest cinematic heroes.

Western viewers will have seen him in Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" movies where he played two roles.

Gordon Liu practiced martial arts at an early age, and he was the godson of martial artist Lau Charm, who was himself a grand-student of the legendary Wong Fei-hung. One of Lau Charm's son was Lau Kar-leung, a famous director and actor in Hong Kong.

Gordon began his movie career with his debut in the 1974 Shaw Bros movie "5 Shaolin Masters", and he was pretty much typecast as a shaolin monk in many of his movies. When movie roles dried up in the late '90s, he branched out into television, and appeared in dozens of dramas for the Hong Kong TVB station.
9. Which American actor was transported into Ancient China fighting alongside Jet Li and Jackie Chan in "The Forbidden Kingdom"?

Answer: Michael Angarano

Michael Angarano is an American actor who has appeared in numerous movies and television dramas. He once dated Kristen Stewart.

"The Forbidden Kingdom" is the first movie collaboration between two movie giants: Jet Li and Jackie Chan.

It is a shame that it was mostly an American production with an American director.
Imagine the outcome if it was a Hong Kong movie directed by a veteran Hong Kong director.
10. General Fujita was played by which martial artist in "Fist of Legend"?

Answer: Billy Chow

Billy Chow is a former World Kickboxing champion (1984-1986), and has appeared in several Hong Kong movies, his most famous being "Fist of Legend".

He has also appeared in two Jackie Chan's movies: "Dragons Forever" and "Miracles".

In 2006, he announced his retirement from acting.
