Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John Wayne appeared in more than 80 films in the 1920s and 30s, but it was his portrayal of the Ringo Kid, in a 1939 film, that made his name. What was the film called?

Answer: Stagecoach

Directed by John Ford, "Stagecoach" tells the story of a group of strangers on a stagecoach ride, which is complicated by the fact that Geronimo and his Apaches are on the warpath. The Ringo Kid is recruited as the shotgun guard in the absence of the usual one. Claire Trevor provided the love interest.
2. John Wayne starred in three John Ford films, made in consecutive years, all filmed in Monument Valley, and known as the Cavalry Trilogy. The first and last were "Fort Apache" and "Rio Grande" - which film came in between?

Answer: She Wore a Yellow Ribbon

Made in 1948, 1949 and 1950 respectively, these three films are considered by many to be John Wayne's best. Oddly he plays the same character, Kirby Yorke, in the first and third movies, but a different character, Nathan Cutting Brittles, in the middle one. Captain Brittles, after a lifetime in the cavalry, is on the brink of retirement and takes out one last patrol to try and avert a major Indian uprising.

At the end of the film he is appointed chief of scouts with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
3. In 1952, John Wayne co-starred in the John Ford film, "The Quiet Man", with an actress with whom he was to share the screen another four times. Who was she?

Answer: Maureen O'Hara

She also starred with him in "Rio Grande", "Wings of Eagles", "McLintock" and "Big Jake".
4. In 1968 John Wayne directed and starred in the Vietnam war movie, "The Green Berets". He made the film to demonstrate his support for the war when public opinion was beginning to turn against it. He turned down a starring role in another major film so that he could make "The Green Berets"; which film?

Answer: The Dirty Dozen

The part of Major Reisman in the star-studded movie "The Dirty Dozen" went instead to Lee Marvin. In "The Green Berets" Wayne portrayed Colonel Kirby who leads two teams of Special Forces to Vietnam, accompanied by a sceptical reporter (David Janssen). Heartstrings are tugged by the sub-plot of a young orphan, Ham Chuck, and the gruesome death of the soldier who has befriended him.
5. In 1969 John Wayne starred in the film "True Grit", for which he won his only Oscar. What is the name of his character?

Answer: Rooster Cogburn

Wayne plays a hard-drinking, hard-shooting US Marshal who teams up with a Texas Ranger (Glen Campbell) to help find the killer of a young girl's father.
6. In the 1962 film "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", John Wayne's co-star is James Stewart. But who plays Liberty Valance?

Answer: Lee Marvin

James Stewart plays an aging senator who returns to the town of Shinbone to attend the funeral of John Wayne's character, Tom Doniphon, and to finally tell the truth about the shooting, years before, of the outlaw Liberty Valance.
7. In which 1962 film does John Wayne play the part of Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Vandervoort of the 504th Parachute Regiment?

Answer: The Longest Day

In "The Flying Leathernecks" Wayne plays a Marine pilot, in "In Harm's Way" he is a Navy Captain, and in "They Were Expendable" he is a Navy Lieutenant. "The Longest Day" tells the story of the D-Day landings in Normandy, from the point of view of many different combatants, from both sides, who are played by a multitude of big name stars.
8. John Wayne stars in and directs the 1960 film "The Alamo", for which he was also nominated for an Oscar as producer. Who does he play in the film?

Answer: Davy Crockett

John Wayne was originally going to play Sam Houston, a part small enough to allow him to focus on directing, but the film's financial backers insisted on him playing a lead part. This was one of the nine films in which Wayne's son Patrick also starred.
9. In 1968 John Wayne starred in "Hellfighters", a film about a group of oil well firefighters, loosely based on the life of which real life person?

Answer: Red Adair

Wayne plays Chance Buckman, the character based on Red Adair. Red Adair was, for decades, the world's leading expert on dealing with oilwell fires and explosions, including the fires in Kuwait's oil wells, which were the legacy of the first Gulf War. Adair and his long-time colleagues, Hansen and Matthews, were all technical advisers on the film.
10. Made in 1976, "The Shootist" was John Wayne's last film, and one of his best. Which of these actors do not appear in the film?
