When the Fellowship arrived at the Mines of Moria, there was Elvish writing inscribed on the doors. Gandalf translated it as, "The Door of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak, friend, and enter." Frodo realized that it was a riddle and asked Gandalf the Elvish word for "friend". "Mellon," Gandalf replied, and the massive doors opened.

At the beginning, the Narrator told the story of how it all began with the forging of the Great Rings. It was mentioned that the Elves were the "immortal, wisest, and fairest of all beings". Legolas spotted a "wisp of cloud" in the sky, moving fast, and against the wind. Gandalf realized that the creatures were spies of Saruman and the path south was being watched. He announced, "We must take the Pass of Caradhras."

When Boromir was wounded after fighting valiantly against the opposing army, he spoke for a moment with Aragorn. He showed that he had finally accepted Aragorn not only as the king of the throne, but his king as well. His last words were saying, "My brother, my captain, my king."

Gandalf faced the demon on the bridge of Khazad-Dúm, willing it not to pass. He said, "I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn." It tried to strike him and Gandalf demanded, "Go back to the Shadow. You shall not pass!" The creature fell into the depths, pulling Gandalf off the rocks with it.

As he struggled to hold, Gandalf said, "Fly, you fools!" and tumbled into the darkness. His words were the first to be heard, echoing through the mountains in "The Two Towers".
