"Cast Away" is the story of a FedEx employee who gets marooned on an uninhabited island a la Robinson Crusoe in the novel by Daniel Defoe. The film sparked off the idea for a similarly themed TV show which eventually became the Emmy award winning show "Lost". Tom Hanks was nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for his performance in "Cast Away" but lost out to Russell Crowe ("Gladiator").

Hanks directed his first film, "That Thing You Do!" in 1996, a film he also wrote and starred in. The plot centred around a rock band which only managed to produce one hit.

Although the film garnered decent reviews from critics, it tanked at the box office.
