Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There's something about your first piece.

Answer: American Pie

According to the IMDb (Internet Movie Database) website, writer Adam Herz's original "title" for "American Pie" (1999) was "Untitled Teenage Sex Comedy That Can Be Made For Under $10 Million Which Studio Readers Will Likely Hate But I Think You Will Love". Which pretty much sums it up.

"American Pie" (1999) is a movie about four teenage boys who make a pact that they will each lose their virginity before they graduate high school. As is to be expected, the humour is puerile. Despite mostly negative and mediocre reviews, the movie did quite well at the box office.
2. The terrifying motion picture from the number 1 bestseller.

Answer: Jaws

"Jaws", the 1975 movie, was based on the book of the same name by Peter Benchley, published the previous year. It tells the story of a great white shark that preys upon the people of Amity Island, a fictional resort town.

"Jaws" was nominated for four academy awards and won three -- Best Original Score (John Williams), Best Sound, and Best Film Editing. It was nominated for Best Picture but lost to "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".
3. The story of a man who wanted to keep the world safe for democracy...and meet girls.

Answer: Stripes

The other tagline for "Stripes (1981) was "Today's army needs men of courage... honesty... integrity... ambition. Instead, they got John Winger."

John (portrayed by Bill Murray) and Russell (Harold Ramis) are two friends who impulsively join the army. According to the director, Ivan Reitman, Bill Murray insisted that Harold Ramis be cast as Russell because they were good friends in real life and because Ramis could help him ad-lib and improvise his way through the film. In fact, a significant percentage of the dialogue was ad-libbed and the action improvised by Reitman, Murray and Ramis, as well as John Laroquette.
4. The story that touched the world.

Answer: ET - The Extra Terrestrial

Originally released in 1982, "The story that touched the world" was the tagline for the 1985 re-release.

"ET: the Extra-Terrestrial" was written by Melissa Mathieson and directed by Steven Spielberg. Harrison Ford, Melissa Mathieson's partner at that time (and future husband), had a cameo role in the film, however, this was cut from the final version.

The original taglines for the movie included:
He is afraid. He is (totally alone). He is 3 million light years from home.
The Extra-Terrestrial in his adventure on Earth.
The mystery. The suspense. The adventure. The call... that started it all.
5. Young ones! Parental units! We summon you!

Answer: Coneheads

The movie "Coneheads" (1993) arose out of a sketch on the popular television comedy show, "Saturday Night Live". The film includes Jane Curtin, Dan Aykroyd, Michael McKean, and Garrett Morris from the "Saturday Night Live" cast, as well as Jason Alexander, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Phil Hartman, Tom Arnold, and William Shatner. Drew Carey and Ellen DeGeneres made their film debut in "Coneheads".
6. The true story of a real fake.

Answer: Catch Me If You Can

"Catch Me If You Can" (2002) is based on the true story of con-man Frank Abagnale Jnr. Abagnale was a scammer from a very young age. Although he was an accomplished forger and impersonator, he wasn't infallible - he was imprisoned for theft and forgery/fraud on four separation occasions in France, Sweden and the USA.

Frank Abagnale was portrayed by Leonardo Di Caprio. The real Frank Abagnale made a cameo appearance in the movie as a French policeman taking the on-screen Abagnale into custody.

Other taglines included:
Catch them this Christmas.
The true story of an ingenious deception.
Frank didn't go to flight school...Frank didn't go to medical school...Frank didn't go to law school...because Frank's still in high school!
7. We are not alone.

Answer: Close Encounters of the Third Kind

The expression "close encounters of the third kind" was coined by American astronomer/astrophysicist and UFO expert, Professor Josef Allen Hynek, in 1972. He defined three levels of alien encounters -- the first kind is sighting a UFO, the second kind is observable effects, such as scorched earth, and the third kind is contact with an alien or aliens. Hynek was a consultant on Steven Spielberg's 1977 movie, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind".

He also made a cameo appearance as a spectator when the extra-terrestrials emerge from the mothership in the final sequence of the movie.
8. Life is in their hands -- death is on their minds!

Answer: Twelve Angry Men

"Twelve Angry Men" (1957) is a classic courtroom drama which examines the process of jury deliberation and the concept of reasonable doubt. A youth accused of murder will be executed if convicted of the murder of his father. Initially, eleven jurors want to vote guilty - only one (portrayed by Henry Fonda) is inclined to critically examine the evidence. The cast included Jack Klugman, Lee J. Cobb, Martin Balsam, Ed Begley and E.G. Marshall.

In 2008, the American Film Institute voted this movie the second-best courtroom drama ever, second only to "To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962).

Additional taglines were:
They have twelve scraps of paper... Twelve chances to kill!
...it explodes like twelve sticks of dynamite!
9. The music is on his side.

Answer: Footloose

"Footloose" (1984) is loosely based on a true story. The movie stars Kevin Bacon as Ren McCormack, a city kid who moves to a small town where dancing is banned at the instigation of the local clergyman, Reverend Shaw Moore (portrayed by John Lithgow).

"Footloose" is notable for its soundtrack. Two songs -- "Footloose" (Kenny Loggins and Dean Pitchford) and "Let's Hear It for the Boy" (Dean Pitchford and Tom Snow) -- were nominated for Best Original Song, but lost to Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called to Say I Love You" from "The Woman in Red".

Other taglines included:
One kid. One town. One chance.
All he wanted to do was dance.
He's a big-city kid in a small town. They said he'd never win. He knew he had to.
10. Knowing what you know now, what would you do differently?

Answer: Peggy Sue Got Married

"Peggy Sue Got Married" (1986) stars Kathleen Turner, as the titular Peggy Sue, and Nicolas Cage as her husband, Charlie. The title is derived from the Buddy Holly songs "Peggy Sue" (1957) and "Peggy Sue Got Married" (1959), the latter song being featured in the movie soundtrack.

Other taglines included:
Peggy Sue is going back with the chance to change her destiny.
She awoke in the past with a chance to rebuild her future.
A film about love and life and the chance to change them both.
...or will she?
