Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. She came. She saw. She moved in.

Answer: HouseSitter

This 1992 romantic comedy stars Steve Martin as an architect whose girlfriend dumps him after he has built their dream home, and Goldie Hawn as a con artist who moves in to the empty house and pretends to be his wife. He is initially shocked when he discovers her there, but they decide there are advantages for both of them in the situation. Needless to say, he eventually realises that the two of them have developed a partnership that makes each of them a better person. So they get married and live happily ever after.
2. What if someone you never met, someone you never saw, someone you never knew was the only one for you?

Answer: Sleepless in Seattle

This tear-jerker was released in 1993, and featured two of the hottest actors of the time. When widower Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks) is persuaded by his son to tell the listeners on a radio talk-back show how much he misses his wife, his words touch Annie Reed (Meg Ryan), and she writes him a letter that she never mails - but her friend does, Sam's son reads it, and he starts a campaign to get the two of them together. Problem - he lives in Seattle, she lives in Baltimore. With numerous references to the classic film 'An Affair to Remember', they do finally get together on the observation deck of the Empire State Building.
3. You can't get enough of a good thing... But first you have to find it.

Answer: Milk Money

This 1994 romantic comedy features Melanie Griffith as a prostitute (with a heart of gold, of course) who finds herself involved with a suburban man (Ed Harris) after she helps his son out of a tricky situation. A lot of the comedy is juvenile, and slapstick, but she does eventually extricate herself from the complexities of her former life, and settle down in the suburbs as the owner of an ice cream parlor.

Not every movie with an interesting tag line is a gem.
4. Drink from me and live forever.

Answer: Interview with the Vampire

This 1994 Gothic/horror film starts with a reporter interviewing Louis de Pointe du Lac (Brad Pitt), who describes his life from the time he was turned into a vampire in 1791 by Lestat de Lioncourt (Tom Cruise). The two of them add a young girl named Claudia (Kirsten Dunst) to their vampire family, but when she is destroyed, things spiral downwards.

The story finishes in the present, with the reporter showing he has clearly not understood Louis's intent in granting the interview, as he asks to be turned into a vampire despite all the unpleasantness that had been described. We are left unclear whether Lestat granted his wish.
5. Don't get mad. Get everything.

Answer: First Wives Club

Cynthia (Stockard Channing) commits suicide after writing a letter to each of her three former friends: Annie (Diane Keaton), Elise (Goldie Hawn) and Brenda (Bette Midler). The four had been college friends who lost touch over the years, and now realise that they have all been let down by the men in their lives - what led to Cynthia's suicide was the knowledge that the ex-husband who she had helped become wealthy had just married his much younger mistress.

The other three form the First Wives Club, and start digging up dirt.

They eventually realise, however, that exacting revenge would make them no better than their exes, and use their information to force the men to organise the establishment of a Crisis Center for abused women in Cynthia's memory.
6. The journey is everything.

Answer: Jerry Maguire

This 1996 movie is about a number of journeys: Jerry (Tom Cruise) starts thinking that his career is the central journey of his life, then learns that developing relationships is more important. When he is fired from his job in a sports agency, only Dorothy (Renée Zellweger) comes along to work with him in the new agency he sets up, with Rod (Cuba Gooding Jr) as his only client.

The professional and personal journeys are both rocky, but (it's a romantic comedy, after all) everyone ends up happy and successful.
7. What if finding the love of your life meant changing the life that you loved?

Answer: Fools Rush In

No, it's not an Elvis movie, despite the allusion in the title, and the use of a number of his songs on the soundtrack. Matthew Perry stars in this 1997 movie as Alex, an architect who has a passionate one-night stand, while visiting a project in Las Vegas, with Isabel (Selma Hayek). Three months later she lets him know she is pregnant with his child, and they marry (with an Elvis impersonator officiating). Twists and turns later, they remarry at the Grand Canyon.
8. A comedy about the heart that goes for the throat.

Answer: As Good as It Gets

Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt both won Best Actor Oscars for their portrayals, respectively, of the obsessive-compulsive homophobic Melvin Udall and Carol Connelly, the only waitress in the restaurant he frequents who will agree to serve him. Their relationship is both complicated and kicked along by Melvin's caring for a dog belonging to his neighbor Simon (Greg Kinnear), a gay artist. Melvin develops a fondness for the dog, which is reciprocated, and the three people start to develop a relationship that helps each of them be stronger than they were on their own.
9. There's a little witch in every woman.

Answer: Practical Magic

Maybe not every woman, but it is certainly true for Sally and Gillian Owens, played respectively by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in this 1998 romantic comedy. Unfortunately, they have inherited a family curse that means the men they love are doomed to die early.

After a fair amount of astral travelling, possession by the spirits of the dead (including a serial killer who one of them managed to get involved with), and other witchy activities, the curse is lifted.
10. Romeo, oh Romeo, get out of my face!

Answer: 10 Things I Hate About You

This 1997 modernization of the Shakespeare play 'The Taming of the Shrew' sees high school students attempting to find romantic partners. Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) can't date Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) because her father has decreed that Bianca cannot date anyone until her older sister (who is totally lacking interest in a social life)does so.

He convinces Patrick (Heath Ledger) to pursue Kat (Julia Styles), but it turns out that Bianca is only interested in Joey (Andrew Keegan), whose previous exploitation of Kat's naivete adds another complication to events. Don't worry, he gets his comeuppance, and all the right people realise who they belong with.
