Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This movie, about a man saving over a thousand people during the genocide crisis in Rwanda, earned Don Cheadle an Oscar nomination. Unfortunately Oscar recognition didn't equal box office success. What movie was it?

Answer: Hotel Rwanda

"Rwanda" was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress. Neither Cheadle nor the other two won in their respective categories.
2. Zach Braff of "Scrubs" fame, wrote, directed, and starred in this film about a man who went back home to New Jersey because his mother died. What movie, co-starring Natalie Portman, landed on our list of most disappointing movies of 2004?

Answer: Garden State

Natalie Portman was amazing as the quirky love interest opposite Braff. "Garden State" was Braff's first effort at writing/directing.
3. A TV star who tried to make it on the big screen in 2004 was Ray Romano. Unfortunately his TV audience didn't come out to support which comedy, about a small town man running for mayor against a popular ex-U.S. President?

Answer: Welcome to Mooseport

Gene Hackman added some "movie star" punch to the film, but in the end "everybody loves" box office flops. Another TV vet, Maura Tierney, played the love interest of the two male leads.
4. Jackie Chan hit box office gold with his "Rush Hour" movies. In 2004 he left us wondering where Chris Tucker was as he missed big with this movie remake. What movie, about an inventor making a crazy wager with the head of the Royal Academy of Science, am I talking about?

Answer: Around the World in 80 Days

Chan played the assistant to the inventor who bet the head of the Royal Academy of Science that he could circumnavigate the entire globe in 80 days. The movie did give us a cameo by the now Governer of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
5. Historical epics are always a financial risk in Hollywood because they are usually expensive and they don't always draw a crowd. Which historical epic, about a small group of men, grossly outnumbered, defending their ruined mission for 13 days, was not very "memorable"?

Answer: The Alamo

"The Alamo" starred Billy Bob Thornton and Dennis Quaid as American heroes Davy Crockett and Sam Houston. Sadly no one will remember this Alamo.
6. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen have made a pretty good living with many straight-to-video movies. However, in 2004 they thought they would give the big screen a try. Which film, about two sisters with very different personalities, evading the uptight authority figure in a wild adventure, was probably better suited for straight-to-video?

Answer: New York Minute

"New York Minute"...that's about how long it lasted at the theater. Eugene Levy did, however, play a perfect uptight authority figure.
7. Which movie, about two buddies in search of some nourishment late at night, was advertised as starring "that Indian guy from 'Van Wilder' and that Asian guy from 'American Pie'."?

Answer: Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle

This movie was actually pretty funny. Neil Patrick Harris (aka Doogie Howser) made a cameo in the film.
8. Anne Hathaway played the title character in this fairy tale, about a girl whose fairy Godmother gave her the gift/curse of obedience. She then went on a quest to rid herself of the curse and find an audience who would pay to see the movie. Sadly, she could not find an audience anywhere. Name the film.

Answer: Ella Enchanted

Hathaway seems to have a thing for playing a princess. She also lent her lungs to the movie soundtrack. She has an amazing voice!
9. This movie was about basketball star Todd Anderson being chosen number one in the NBA draft, and the decisions he must make as a new celebrity. His family offered him plenty of suggestions on how to spend his new-found fortune, which was about three times as much as the movie actually made. Name the film.

Answer: The Cookout

This movie starred newcomer Quran Pender as the lead character, but boasted Hollywood heavyweights such as Danny Glover, Queen Latifah, and Farrah Fawcett in supporting roles.
10. Poor Ben Affleck starred in a couple of box office flops in 2004. For his second dud of the year, Affleck tried his hand at a holiday movie. Not even Santa could save this movie about a man trying to rediscover the Christmas spirit by returning to his childhood home. Name the film.

Answer: Surviving Christmas

Affleck returned to his childhood home to find a dysfunctional family living there. He then paid the family a fortune to allow him to spend Christmas with them.
