Answer: old timers

When they first become partners in the very first movie they talk about what guns they use. Riggs uses an automatic while Murtaugh is still using a six shooter.

2. In the third "Lethal Weapon" movie Roger and Martin get demoted after causing a lot of damage in the first scene.

They attempted to diffuse a bomb, unsuccessfully, rather than wait for the bomb squad. They are soon re-promoted.
