Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This beautiful actress picked up two Oscars in the 80s, for both "Norma Rae" and "Places in the Heart". Who is this beauty?

Answer: Sally Field

Sally started her career in "Gidget" back in 1965 in the television series. A few years later, she took to the skies in "The Flying Nun" as Sister Bertrille.
Sally hooked up with Burt Reynolds for a few movies, including "Smokey and the Bandit", "The End" and "Hooper", to name a few.

After this string of movies, she took her role to a serious level in "Norma Rae" and won herself an Oscar for her performance as Norma.

Sally played the role of M'Lynn Eatenton in the movie "Steel Magnolias". She played the role of Shelby's mother. She had to watch her daughter die in this movie. Her scene, where she breaks down after the funeral, was so sad, but yet had a comical ending.
2. This country western singer, turned actress, was born in Tennessee. She composed songs for her movies, "Rhinestone", "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" and "Straight Talk". Who is this singer?

Answer: Dolly Parton

Dolly played the role of Truvy. Truvy was the hairdresser that owned her own shop in town. I love the way that woman talks. I had to laugh at the line, "There is no such thing as natural beauty." It was strange seeing Dolly in a movie, and not hearing her beautiful singing voice.
3. Shirley MacLaine is one hot lady. She can sing, she can dance, she can act! She was nominated for many Oscars, but couldn't pick one up until her role of Aurora. What movie did she win her first Oscar for?

Answer: Terms of Endearment

Shirley played the role of Ouiser Boudreaux in the movie "Steel Magnolias". She was the cranky one that Clairee told M'Lynn to hit, after the funeral. This was my favorite scene in the whole movie. M'Lynn was crying and mad and Clairee pulls Ouiser out and says, "here hit her..." Of course, Ouiser was not happy with the decision at all. She took off like a bat out of hell.
4. This beautiful actress portrayed a mermaid that fell in love with Tom Hanks. Can you name this "Splash" beauty?

Answer: Daryl Hannah

Daryl played the role of Annelle Dupuy. She was courted by Sammy Desoto in 'Steel Magnolias'. They were married and then she became pregnant. She was going to name the baby Shelby. At the end of the movie, her husband, donned in a bunny rabbit costume, and hitched a ride to the hospital on a motorcycle, to see the birth of his baby.
5. Olympia Dukakis has played many different roles in her later years. She was Cher's mother in "Moonstruck". She played Kristi Alley's mother in "Look Who's Talking". Do know which movie she won an Oscar for in 1988?

Answer: Moonstruck

Olympia played the role of Clairee Belcher in 'Steel Magnolias' to a tee. She was like the leader of the pack of women. She was the mean one, and the fun one. She had a saying "if you don't have something nice to say, come sit by me." She loved the gossiping and the fun!
6. Everyone was thrilled when Julia Roberts picked up her first Oscar for "Erin", but can you remember the first Oscar nomination that she received, for Best Actress in a Leading Role?

Answer: Pretty Woman

Julia Roberts did get a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in "Steel Magnolias" for her role of Shelby. Shelby was M'Lynn's daughter who was getting married in the beginning of the film. After Shelby was married, she had a son. Her mother was not happy at the "joyful" news, since her daughter was a diabetic, and should not have gotten pregnant.

Shelby says, "I'd rather have 30 seconds of happy than a lifetime of nothing special." That was so sad, but true. M'Lynn finally understood what she meant.
7. Elizabeth and Radley Tate have three beautiful daughters. One is getting married, one is a lesbian and the other is developmentally handicapped. Carla is trying to grow up without the help of her overprotective mother, played by Diane Keaton. Who plays the role of Carla's father, Radley Tate?

Answer: Tom Skerritt

Tom not only played the role of Radley Tate in "The Other Sister" but he also played the role of Drum Eastenton, in "Steel Magnolias". He was the father of the bride in this movie also. He was shooting all the birds in the first part of the movie. He lost a little bit of his hearing due to the gunshots!
8. This actor has appeared in many movies, from "The Pelican Brief" as Professor Thomas Callahan, to the role of Dr. Jeff Cooper in "Baby Boom" with Diane Keaton. Who is this actor who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in "The Right Stuff"?

Answer: Sam Shepard

Sam Shepard had a smaller role in "Steel Magnolias" as Truvy's husband, Spud. Spud put up with Truvy and her comments, including the time she yelled, "I'm just screamin' at my husband; I can do that any time!" But then again, I don't think Spud minded her screaming at all.
9. This actor actually believed in Santa Claus. He tried to get Dorey Walker and her daughter, Susan, to believe in him also. He was also trying to get a little closer to Dorey in the meantime too. Who is this actor who played the role of Bryan Bedford in "Miracle on 34th Street", the 1994 version?

Answer: Dylan McDermott

Dylan played the role of Shelby's husband, Jackson, in the movie, "Steel Magnolias". He was such a good husband to Shelby. He knew that she had a problem, but he loved her and took care of her. When he came in the house and found her on lying on the floor, he just broke down.
10. Julia Roberts, Olympia Dukakis and Shirley MacLaine teamed up in this southern flick, directed by Herbert Ross. What movie is this?

Answer: Steel Magnolias

Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Darryl Hannah and the rest of the gang starred in this heart moving picture. It was a wonderful movie, from the marriage of Shelby and Jackson, to the sweet southern comments of Clairee and Ouiser, and to the future birth of Annelle's child. This movie has everything from sadness to happiness. It moves you from joy to sorrow.

This movie reminded me quite a bit of "Terms of Endearment". I had to put MacLaine into a whole new character, since her role was replaced by Sally Field. If "Steel Magnolias" would have come out first, I probably would have been more impressed, but I just felt it was a copy-cat for "Terms".
