The movie begins in a textile factory where Paul talks to his son. Apparently, Paul's wife isn't well; she's been talking to herself to a point where it's concerning. One of his colleagues, after performing some final checks in the factory, notices some weird movement in the building as she makes her rounds culminating in the appearance of a spectre-like figure that seems to appear when she shuts off the lights.

She tells Paul about it specifically before leaving for the night. He, of course, doesn't heed the warning and gets mauled and killed by the apparition when he passes into the darkness and hides in his office.

Paul's step-daughter, Rebecca, doesn't hear the news about Paul's death until a bit later. In the meantime, she tries to force her not-boyfriend/boyfriend, Bret, to get out of her apartment even though he makes it clear that after eight months he wants to be a bit more official.

He tries to hide one of his socks in her dresser, but she finds it by the time he's on the sidewalk outside her apartment and she tosses it back. Things are a bit more dire elsewhere; Paul's wife and son, Sophie and Martin, experience some weird goings-on at home when Martin finds Sophie talking to herself.

It turns out that she's actually speaking to someone else that Martin can't see too clearly.

After Martin becomes unable to sleep at home, his school starts calling out looking for answers, especially since his father died so recently. His social worker ends up contacting Rebecca who, along with Bret, goes to pick him up and scope out the problem at home.

The social worker tries to figure out the truth behind the whole matter, but Martin doesn't seem to answer anything since he's concerned about going back to his mother's home. Instead, he wants to stay with Rebecca, even for one night.

Martin tells Rebecca that their mother has been receiving a special visitor named Diana every night and Rebecca doesn't really believe this since, when her father left, she used to have horrible nightmares about Diana. When they head into the house, Sophie tells Rebecca that she refuses to talk to a stranger about her problems and it's clear that she's off her medication. Worried for her step-brother's safety, Rebecca decides to take Martin to her place for a few days.

As they depart, the spectre appears before Martin once again, slamming a door before he rushes downstairs with his overnight bag.

Rebecca brings Martin back to her place and Bret clues her into the fact that she may be doing all of this to hurt her mother in some sick way. It gives her a lot to think about as the night comes to an end. That night, Rebecca wakes up to find Martin missing from the bed, but there's a figure in her bedroom doorway scratching into the hardwood floor.

As the neon light outside Rebecca's window flickers on and off, the figure disappears and reappears, at least until she turns on a light switch. Rebecca eventually finds Martin sleeping in the bathtub with a flashlight.

The next morning, Rebecca finds the name scratched into the floor under her rug.

Bret takes Rebecca to her mother's place and the two break in, intending to run if they see her return to the house. Rebecca ends up searching Sophie's office for clue and when she goes inside she finds a picture of her mother and Diana standing together on a sunny street-- Sophie in the open and Diana under an umbrella.

The photo indicates that it was taken in Mulberry Hill, California. Some of the other records laying about Sophie's office include photos of patients at an institution assaulted by Diana, tapes specifically about Diana's photosensitivity, and other items. One particular tape notes that Diana had a weird fascination with Sophie, at least until Diana was killed in a freak photosensitivity experiment in the ward.

Rebecca is attacked by Diana before her mother returns home and she and Bret end up leaving with a box of medical records. At the same time, Sophie and Martin get home and plan to reconcile over movies and popcorn-- just the three of them. This worries Martin, especially since her mother has stopped taking her medication again, but he feels trapped into tagging along.

They decide to face their fears and this prompts Sophie to shut off the lights and introduce her son to Diana once and for all.

This goes about as well as one would expect. As Sophie is cast to the floor, Martin turns on some lights and flees from the house. He ends up going to Rebecca's...and Diana follows. But before this encounter, Rebecca tells her young step-brother the whole backstory behind Diana and says that she believes her mother met the troubled girl at the asylum.

There, Diana was able to get into Sophie's head and reemerge when she was at her worst.

Martin, Rebecca and Bret return to Sophie's house to have a big discussion about everything going on, specifically Diana. Sophie admits to being friends with Diana but refuses to see the truth, saying that Diana couldn't be dead. Sophie blames Rebecca for shutting her out after Paul died and claims that she's trying to make it right by not shutting Diana out. That night, Martin, Rebecca, and Bret all decide to spend the night in the house, safeguarding against Diana's return with different light sources.

At the end of the night, Rebecca tries to speak to her mother through the bedroom door and a note is passed to her from underneath. All it says is 'I need help'. And that's where things get crazy.

As Rebecca searches the bathroom for her mother's pills, the lights start to flicker. She heads to bed with Martin and that's when all of the power goes out, leaving the house in near-total darkness. She heads to the basement to toggle with the breaker box and Martin, scared upon waking up, follows her downstairs, chased through the halls by Diana with nothing more than a candle in his hands. Rebecca only realizes that it's all a trap when it's too late; Diana locks them in the basement. The only solution, as it turns out, is to burn Diana's records in the furnace to create light. Searching through a box of Halloween supplies, Martin finds a large blacklight and, when they use it they find that they're able to see Diana clearly because of UV rays.
Bret returns from looking outside and gets attacked by Diana, leading him to escape in his car.
Upstairs, Sophie trie to confront Diana and take her medication, but that doesn't really go as planned.

Bret returns to the house with police in tow and recommends to the cops that they bring flashlights. They don't have much in the way of situational awareness, so the whole thing ends as one would expect. But this does grant a bit more opportunity for Sophie to wake up from being knocked out and for Rebecca and Martin to get out of the basement. Martin leaves with Bret, but Rebecca realizes she needs to save Sophie, so she heads upstairs to find her mother.

This results in a final fight with Diana, but Sophie, who brandishes a gun, threatens to end the nightmare once and for all.

The gun doesn't work on Diana, but Sophie realizes that she can save her children's lives by killing herself and removing Diana from the world. The movie ends with Rebecca, Martin, and Bret together, free of Diana once and for all.
