Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film opens in a munitions manufacturing plant in Odessa. What song is playing in the background?

Answer: For What It's Worth

The song "For What It's Worth," by Buffalo Springfield may be better known as "Stop, Hey What's That Sound." The opening scene traces the path of a single bullet from its manufacture to its final destination, in the head of a small African child.
2. Where is Yuri Orlov from?

Answer: Ukraine

Yuri and his family fled Ukraine and settled in Brighton Beach. Brighton Beach has a very large Russian population and is often called "Little Odessa" by the locals. The family pretended to be Jewish in order to aid their escape. Yuri says, "Little about my life has been kosher ever since."
3. What is the Orlov family business?

Answer: restaurant business

Yuri says that people go into the restaurant business because people are always going to have to eat. He has just witnessed a gun battle at a restaurant and it is at that point he decides that his destiny lies in fulfilling another basic human need.
4. Yuri has a good head for business and tries to improve his stature in arms dealing by making contact with Simeon Weisz, the acknowledged foremost arms dealer in the world. "He was selling guns before there was gunpowder." Does Yuri become his partner?

Answer: No

Yuri approaches Simeon with a business proposal at an arms convention. However, Simeon says that they are not in the same business. "You think I just sell guns, don't you? I don't. I take sides." Finally, Simeon tells Yuri that this is no place for amateurs.
5. Yuri considers himself an equal opportunity merchant of death. Even so, he will not sell arms to Osama Bin Laden. What is his reason?

Answer: He is worried about not getting paid.

He is concerned about getting paid. Yuri says "Back then, he was always bouncing checks." "I supplied every army but the Salvation Army." He sells Israeli-made Uzis to Muslims. He even sells weapons to Afghanistan to fight against his own countrymen. Yuri Orlov has become very successful.

His weapons are represented in eight of the ten top war zones. During this recounting by Yuri, the song "Money" by the Flying Lizards is playing in the background.
6. Which country's flag does Vitaly (Yuri's brother) use to help disguise their vessel?

Answer: France

Yuri and his crew are carrying illegal weapons by ship. The authorities have been tipped off. To avoid capture, Yuri decides to change the name of the ship. He renames the ship "Kono", which is a Dutch ship. The ship's flag must match the registration. Vitaly does find a French flag. He suggests turning it sideways so it will look like a flag from the Netherlands.
7. Who is Yuri's love interest?

Answer: Ava Fontaine

Yuri has worshiped Ava Fontaine since he was ten years old. Early in the film, he sees her in a parade as Miss Long Island. In his attempt to win her affections, he rents a private jet, car and even a suit - representing them as his own. "In my experience, some of the most successful relationships are based on lies and deceit." They get married soon afterwards.
8. Andre Baptiste, Sr., the dictator "president" of Liberia, turns out to be one of Yuri's best customers. How does Andre pay for his cache of weapons?

Answer: diamonds

Andre or 'Andy' as Yuri likes to call him, offers to pay for his weapons with timber or stones. Of course, Yuri accepts the diamonds as the timber is not entirely practical. He says, "It's kind of hard to get a tree trunk into my hand luggage." Yuri goes on to say that these diamonds are often called "conflict diamonds" or "blood diamonds".
9. What is the combination to Yuri's secret "catalog of carnage?"

Answer: Nicolai's birthday (his son)

Yuri used the digits of his son's birthday for the combination to his secret weapons cache.

Jack Valentine has told Ava Orlov everything about Yuri in an effort to capture Yuri. Yuri, in an effort to appease Ava, stops dealing in arms for six months. After six months, the Liberian president (Andre Baptiste, Sr.) makes Yuri an irresistible offer to resume his arms trade. Ava follows Yuri to his vault and discovers the truth about Yuri's trade. She helps Jack Valentine (Ethan Hawke) gather the evidence that he needs to arrest Yuri.
10. Jack Valentine finally has enough evidence to convict Yuri and have him serve consecutive life sentences. Does Yuri go to prison?

Answer: No

While Jack Valentine has Yuri in custody, Yuri explains to Jack that he is a necessary evil. "Soon, there will be a knock on that door. In the hall, there will be a man who outranks you. First, he'll compliment you on the fine job you've done. ... And then, he's going to tell you that I'm to be released. You're going to protest. ... But, in the end, I will be released." Finally, Yuri says, "So you call me evil, but unfortunately for you, I'm a necessary evil." After Yuri says this, there is, in fact, a knock on the door and everything transpires just as Yuri predicts. Yuri is back plying his trade and offers these final words: "Never go to war, especially with yourself."
