Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Dave" (1993), the eponymous protagonist bears an uncanny resemblance to a much more widely recognised figure, for whom he ends up filling in throughout most of the movie. Who does he impersonate?

Answer: The President of the USA

Dave (played by Kevin Kline) is asked to stand in for the President (also played by Kevin Kline) in order to cover up the President's extramarital affair. Unfortunately, the President then suffers a stroke, and his Chief of Staff decides it would be a good idea for Dave to carry on standing in.

There are many cameo appearances in this movie from real politicians and media personalities such as Jay Leno, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Oliver Stone.
2. Bobby Bowfinger is in a fix, having made the rash promise to his producer that action star Kit Ramsey would appear in his newest film. Unfortunately, Kit isn't interested and so Bowfinger eventually resorts to hiring a hapless lookalike named Jiff. Which actor (also known for his roles as a mad professor and a donkey) plays the parts of both Kit and Jiff in the film "Bowfinger" (1999)?

Answer: Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy portrays the two very different characters of Kit and Jiff with equal success. He was a mad professor in "The Nutty Professor" (1996) - another film (one of several) in which he played multiple roles. He also provided the voice of Donkey in the "Shrek" films.

Bowfinger's initial plan is to follow Kit Ramsey, film him secretly, and work the scenes into his film. This ploy was actually used in real life once, when a Russian film maker filmed scenes of Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks on holiday and then created the film "A Kiss from Mary Pickford" (1927) around the footage. It is unknown whether or not the couple were aware that they were being filmed.
3. The 2013 movie "The Double" features two characters, Simon James and James Simon, who look identical but whose personalities are polar opposites. The film is based on a novel of the same name by a Russian author who is better known for a different novel which explores the theme of lawlessness and its consequences. Who is the author?

Answer: Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Dostoyevsky is probably best known for his novel "Crime and Punishment", which has been adapted for film at least 30 times.

In "The Double", Simon is quiet and unremarkable, ignored by his boss and colleagues. James is confident and outgoing, and when he starts working at Simon's office everyone loves him - and bizarrely nobody even notices that he looks exactly like Simon. The score of the film features a recurring motif, the chords of which come from the appropriately titled song "Der Doppelgänger" by Franz Schubert.
4. The story of Peter Pan has eternal appeal, and has spawned many stage and film adaptations over the years. In the 2003 film "Peter Pan", two of the characters are played by the same actor. Following in theatrical tradition, which two roles are they?

Answer: Mr George Darling/Captain Hook

This tradition was also followed in the 1953 animated Disney film of "Peter Pan", where the same actor provided the voice for both characters. There has been much speculation about the origin of this dual role, involving the psychology of the relationship between Wendy and her father, and analysis of the similarities between the two characters' personalities.

In fact the most likely reason is that allocating both roles to the same person saved expense and dressing room space!
5. "The Prisoner of Zenda" (1937) sees an Englishman on his holidays get drawn into impersonating a king who turns out to be a distant relation. Things get a bit hairy, but after a few close shaves everything turns out ok. The pair look almost identical apart from a single feature. What is the difference between Major Rudolf Rassendyll and King Rudolf V at the start of the film?

Answer: Rudolf Rassendyll has a small beard

At the start of the film, Rudolf Rassendlyll sports a small beard. He then has to shave it off in order to impersonate the King. Incidentally, the uniforms in the movie were the inspiration for the Starfleet uniforms in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" and several subsequent "Star Trek" movies.
6. In "The Wizard of Oz" (1939) Dorothy Gale meets several characters in the land of Oz who look awfully familiar from the earlier part the film, when she was at home in Kansas. Which of the following pairs of characters are NOT played by the same actor?

Answer: Aunt Em/The Good Witch of the North

Not only does Zeke appear in Oz as the Cowardly Lion, but the other two farm labourers, Hunk and Hickory appear as the Scarecrow and the Tin Man. Frank Morgan, who plays Professor Marvel (a travelling salesman in Kansas) and the Wizard also plays the parts of a doorman, a cabbie and a guard in the emerald city.

These dual roles reinforce the idea that Dorothy dreamed the whole adventure, and that Oz was simply all in her head.
7. Twins Bok Min and Ma Yau are separated at birth. Years later, one a world class concert pianist and conductor, the other a streetwise mechanic with a penchant for martial arts, they meet again, and predictably much confusion ensues. In "Twin Dragons" (1992), which well known comedic Hong Kong martial artist, actor and director plays the part of both characters?

Answer: Jackie Chan

Jackie Chan is one of several actors who combine their martial arts skills with their acting roles. His films are often very silly. Jackie Chan does all his own stunts, and has sustained several serious injuries as a result.

The twins in "Twin Dragons" share a physical connection which makes them mirror each other's moves. Not good news when Bok Min is in a speedboat chase while Ma Yau is in a restaurant, or while (having accidentally switched places) Bok Min is trying to conduct an orchestra while Ma Yau is involved in a car chase. Extremely useful though, during the denouement when both twins are facing off against a gang of thugs, and the one who knows martial arts is locked in a cage. Each brother also has a love interest, both of which end up preferring the other twin. Enemies defeated, the family are reunited and the film ends with a lavish double wedding.
8. This trilogy sees the main character, Marty McFly, travel backwards and forwards in time, meeting his own son and daughter and his great great grandfather, all of whom bear a spooky resemblance to him. What is the name of the trilogy?

Answer: Back To The Future

The whole trilogy had several actors playing older or younger versions of themselves, which sometimes required them spending hours in make up. In fact Lea Thompson and Crispin Glover, who play Marty McFly's parents, are close in age to Michael J Fox, who plays Marty.

As most of their scenes are set in 1955 it made sense to choose actors who were the right age for the 1955 version of the characters, and make them look older for the scenes set in the "present day" (1985 - the year the first film was made).
9. In this 1949 Ealing Comedy, Louis Mazzini plots and schemes to murder every member of his mother's aristocratic family (the D'Ascoynes) in revenge for their refusal to grant her dying wish to be buried in the family vault. After eliminating them one at a time he inherits the family title and becomes a duke. All eight members of the D'Ascoyne family look very much alike, and are all played by Alec Guinness. What is the name of this movie?

Answer: Kind Hearts and Coronets

"Ealing Comedies" is the name given to a series of dark comedies made by the Ealing studios in London during the years 1947-1957. In "Kind Hearts and Coronets", Alec Guinness plays The Duke, The Banker, The Parson, The General, The Admiral, Young D'Ascoyne, Young Henry and Lady Agatha. During a television interview, Guinness revealed that he had originally only been offered four of the parts, and had replied with a telegram to say, "Why four parts? Why not eight!?"
10. You might expect the two lead characters in the movie "Twins" to look like peas in a pod. However, Julius and Vincent Benedict are not played by the same actor. Which unlikely duo play the twins?

Answer: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito

Arnold Schwarzenegger at 1.88m (6'2") tall, and Danny DeVito at 1.52m (5'0") are an unlikely pair to play twins. In the movie, they are the result of a secret experiment carried out in a genetics laboratory, designed to create the perfect child.

As the money wasn't available to pay Schwarzenegger and DeVito their normal fees for the movie, they agreed to take 20% of box office takings. As it was such a great success, this resulted in both of them earning more from it than from any other movie they starred in, including Arnie's "Terminator" movies.
Hulk Hogan and Christopher Lloyd were actually second choice for the roles, had Schwarzenegger and DeVito turned them down.

Samuel L Jackson and John Travolta star as two (unrelated) characters who are also named Jules and Vincent in the movie "Pulp Fiction" (1994).
