Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Firstly, all movies have one or more themes. What theme is very obviously shared by "Lord of the Rings" and "Star Wars"?

Answer: Good vs. Evil

In both movies, there are the good guys against the bad guys. In "Lord of the Rings", there are elves, men and dwarves with hobbits against Sauron and his minions. In "Star Wars" the original trilogy (Episodes 4-6) the Rebel Alliance fights the Galactic Empire. Episodes 1-3 mainly focus on Jedi versus Sith, and then Republic versus Separatists. "Evil triumphs" is not correct because the good guys win, they have to, otherwise it's not fair!
2. Both movies have a hero struggling for good, and suffering much for it. The hero is swept away from his comfortable home into a world torn with suffering. Who are the heroes?

Answer: Frodo and Luke

In "Lord of the Rings", Frodo Baggins is a hobbit who finds in his possession a ring, the Ring of Power and Evil. He must travel to a far away land and destroy it. Luke Skywalker, appearing in "Star Wars", acquires two droids, one of whom contains information that could turn the tide of battle in favor of a dying rebellion. Will Frodo destroy the Ring and Luke save the Alliance? Another similarity between the two heroes is that they both long to leave home when they are there.

However, Frodo eventually returns to the Shire, but Luke's uncle, Owen, is killed and his farm destroyed so there is no home to go to. Luke is Force sensitive, and can use the Force, but Frodo has no such supernatural weapon.
3. Both movies' respective heroes have an old mentor, a mighty warrior and hero, who dies and then reappears again, to continue helping Frodo and Luke. Who are they?

Answer: Gandalf and Obi Wan

Gandalf the Grey and Obi Wan Kenobi both die. Gandalf falls off Durin's Bridge and dies after slaying the Balrog, and Obi Wan is savagely struck and killed by Darth Vader. However, Gandalf returns from death as Gandalf the White, and Obi Wan appears to Luke several times as a Force Ghost. Yoda does mentor Luke, but when he dies he does not continue helping Luke.
4. Always, always, when you have good guys, you have a super villain or two. Who are the big baddies that Frodo and Luke face?

Answer: Sauron and Palpatine

Sauron is the evil servant of Morgoth, the big evil one, but Morgoth was imprisoned during the time "Lord of the Rings" took place. Palpatine is a Sith, and became Chancellor Palpatine, slowly becoming more and more powerful before striking and forming the Galactic Empire.
5. "Lord of the Rings" and "Star Wars" both have villains with another slave or servant who does the dirty work that the evil guy won't do. Who are they?

Answer: Lord of the Nazgul and Darth Vader

The Lord of the Nazgul is the Witch King of Angmar. He was of the race of men before being enslaved by Sauron. The Nazgul are wraiths, neither alive nor dead, but they're not zombies, either. Although Darth Vader wasn't really Palpatine's slave, he was his apprentice, and did do everything Palpatine told him to do.
6. Which two powerful people once fought with the good guys but turned evil?

Answer: Saruman and Dooku

Leader of the council of Wizards Gandalf belonged to, Saruman the White despaired of ever defeating Sauron and Mordor, so allied himself with the enemy. Saruman was one of the Istari, messengers from Valinor, the Undying Lands, who were supposed to defeat Sauron. Saruman betrayed his fellow wizards, so did not go to the Undying Lands. Dooku, Count of Serenno, turned to the Dark Side after being seduced by Palpatine. Once a powerful Jedi Knight, he became a Sith and gained the name Darth Tyrannus.
7. To relieve the tension, there is comic relief in the two movies. In "Star Wars", C3PO and R2D2 are the tall friend and short friend couple. Who are the "Lord of the Rings" equivalents?

Answer: Legolas and Gimli

C3PO is a protocol droid who loves telling off R2D2, a droid half his size. The droids often parry words back and forth. Legolas and Gimli, elf and dwarf respectively, overcome the hatred between the two races and become good friends. Gimli is also about half of Legolas' height.

This pair engage in scoring games and a drinking game, trying to prove their own superiority. However, C3PO is clearly a lot less smart than R2D2, despite posing as a know-it-all, but Legolas comes across as much smarter and wiser than Gimli.

Although Merry and Pippin also provide much amusement in "Lord of the Rings", they are about the same height.
8. There is a "Star Wars" equivalent to Samwise Gamgee from "Lord of the Rings".

Answer: False

Unfortunately, no. Luke has many friends and helpers, but none so dedicated as Sam. And none followed him from the beginning to the end as a companion. Obi Wan was just there as a ghost, but never really there, if you see. And Luke only met the others later.
9. Although Frodo does not fall in love, Aragorn and Arwen fall in love and later marry. Which couple do the same in "Star Wars"?

Answer: Anakin and Padme

Aragorn met Arwen in Rivendell, and they fell in love there. In "Star Wars", Anakin and Padme met and Anakin loved her for a long time. Padme Amidala later reciprocated his feelings and they secretly married. Although Leia and Han fall in love, they do not marry in the movies. Luke, Han and Leia formed a love triangle, as both men loved Leia and Leia, at first, preferred Luke.

However, Leia then fell for Han, and later Luke and Leia discovered they were siblings. Although not mentioned in the movie, Luke married Mara Jade, a former Imperial spy and the red haired dancer at Jabba the Hutt's palace.
10. Both Frodo and Luke had older male relations who went through many adventures that were linked to their own. What were their names?

Answer: Bilbo and Anakin

Flashbacks of Bilbo Baggins' adventures are shown in "Lord of the Rings". Bilbo is in "Lord of the Rings" too, as his 111th birthday is being celebrated then. Later, he sails to the Undying Lands with Frodo and Gandalf. Anakin Skywalker's life is shown in the first three episodes of "Star Wars" - "A Phantom Menace", "Attack of the Clones", and "Revenge of the Sith".

In the last three episodes, Darth Vader consistently appears, and finally returns to the good side, becoming Anakin again before dying.
