Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the Tannek family celebrating at the start of the movie?

Answer: Paul has got into college.

As the movie begins, we see a white mail van pull up outside the Tannek's house, and the driver hands an envelope to Paul's dad. Dad hands the envelope to Paul who rips it open and declares "I'm in!" much to the delight of his family. The following scene begins with a shot of a cake which has "Congratulations College Boy!" written on it, and we see the family and their friends enjoying a party to celebrate Paul being the "first one ever in our family" to go to college.
2. In which city is the majority of the movie set?

Answer: New York

After Paul's dad has given him a motivational talk about how to succeed in a big city, we see a montage of shots of New York interspersed with shots of Paul trying to settle in to city and college life. Subsequent scenes are shot in iconic New York locations such as Grand Central Station, and Washington Square Park, and New York is mentioned throughout the movie.
3. Where does Paul first meet Dora?

Answer: In class

Paul arrives late for Professor Alcott's European Literature class, and proceeds to take a tumble down the steps of the lecture hall before taking a seat next to Dora, who very kindly enquires as to whether he is OK, and places her cup of iced drink on his knee.
4. When Paul and Chris are chatting in the laundrette, Paul questions Chris's integrity, to which Chris says "Why would I play you?". Which of the following is NOT given as a response by Paul?

Answer: Why did you turn the entire contents of my room upside down?

We see throughout the movie that Paul's roommates Chris, Noah, and Adam are not the most welcoming or friendly of people, certainly to someone like Paul who they just don't think fits in with who they are. Having sneakily got Paul to move out of their student accommodation, the guys are now looking for someone with "off-campus accommodation" in which they can have a party.

Although he clearly displays a level of cynicism and distrust in this scene, Paul relents ... a decision he later regrets.
5. What is Dora's favourite band?

Answer: Everclear

Having sat next to Dora in Professor Alcott's class towards the start of the movie, Paul noticed that Dora had a couple of stickers on her notebook that read "Everclear - so much for the afterglow". He later sees an advert in a newspaper for a concert featuring the band, so buys two tickets, hoping to take Dora. Later in the movie, when he is walking Dora home from the Student Centre, Paul asks "Say, do you know this group Everclear?", to which Dora replies "Are you kidding, they're my favourite!".
6. What reason does the store owner give for not wanting to offer Dora a job?

Answer: She's female.

We see Dora completing her job application form for the night-shift job outside before walking into the store and handing it to the owner. When the store owner says "Night-shift is dangerous, we can't have girls", Dora exasperatedly replies "That's the third time that's happened to me. Why don't you just say so in your ad?". Adam, who is also in the store buying some beer for the party, sticks up for Dora, saying that "it's in violation of sexual discrimination laws", to which the store owner simply says "call next week", causing Dora to dejectedly say "Yeah, right" and walk out of the store. Sensing her disappointment, Adam catches up with Dora outside and persuades her to come to the party (although he sells it as a fundraiser for a homeless animal shelter).
7. Where does Paul find Dora when he returns to the animal shelter after the gig?

Answer: Leaning up against the toilet

Already disappointed that Dora didn't turn up the Everclear gig, Paul's disappointment grows when he returns to the animal shelter and sees the mess that has been left behind by Chris, Noah, and Adam's party. He begins to tidy up, and goes into the bathroom to pour some half-drunk drinks down the sink when he sees a girl, who he quickly realises is Dora, leaning against the toilet unconscious. On trying to bring her bring her round, he quickly realises that something is wrong, and ends up taking her to the hospital in a taxi.
8. When Paul and Dora return to the animal shelter having done some laundry, they find a newly born kitten on the floor. Do they manage to save it?

Answer: Yes

A little earlier in the movie, we see Dora persuade Paul to let a pregnant cat out of its cage so it could be more comfortable. Whilst Paul and Dora are out, the cat has given birth, and there is a tiny kitten on the floor still in its membrane. The kitten is still alive, so Paul carefully cuts it out of its membrane and tries to introduce it back to its mother.

The mother cat rejects the kitten at first, but when Paul and Dora try again a little later, the mother cat starts licking her tiny offspring. We see that the tiny kitten is thriving a little later in the movie, as Paul happily says "Look at how good he looks", to which Dora responds "He's so happy just resting with his brothers and sisters".
9. Which of the following places do we NOT see Paul and Dora visit in celebration of Dora getting a job?

Answer: Zoo

Delighted that she has finally secured a job, Dora persuades Paul to celebrate with her. Paul is reluctant as he only has $30, however Dora tells him not to worry as the celebration is on her. She then proceeds to show Paul a good time without spending a dime.

She gets them into the art gallery for free using her student card, takes advantage of "free refills" at the outdoor coffee stand whilst eating a baguette she has grabbed from outside a bakery, and sneaks the pair into the theatre to watch the second half of a show by pretending they have been outside having a smoke during the interval.
10. At the end of the movie, Dora finally realises that Paul is the one for her, and goes to see him at the animal shelter. She comments that Paul's appearance has changed how?

Answer: "You cut your hair."

We see Paul studying at an operating table in the animal shelter when he hears someone say "hello" from outside the door. He gets up, opens the door, and is quite surprised to see Dora standing there. As Paul invites Dora in, their initial exchange seems a little awkward, and Dora says "You cut your hair", to which Paul (who had previously been sporting a slightly out-of-date curtains-style throughout the movie) replies "Got to keep up with the times, right!".
