Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sophie reads excerpts from her mother's diary about her three possible fathers to her best friends.

Answer: Honey, Honey

The plot of 'Mamma Mia!' begins with Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) attempting to find out who her father is by inviting all three of the potential candidates to her wedding. The catalyst for this somewhat rash decision was her discovery of her mother Donna's old diary from the year before she was born, which told the story of Donna's (Meryl Streep) three love affairs with men named Sam (Pierce Brosnan), Harry (Colin Firth) and Bill (Stellan Skarsgard). When Sophie's best friends and bridesmaids arrive at her home on the Greek island of Kalokairi she wastes no time in reading out the details of Donna's love life to them in between singing bursts of ABBA's 1974 hit 'Honey, Honey':

"I'd heard about him before
I wanted to know some more
And now I know what they mean
He's a love machine"
2. Donna panics when she discovers Bill, Harry and Sam settling in to her old goat house.

Answer: Mamma Mia

Sophie's three possible fathers Bill, Harry and Sam met up after Harry and Sam missed the ferry to Kalokairi and Bill (a famous Swedish adventurer) offered to take them there on his boat. On arrival they find themselves housed in an old goat house as Sophie hadn't told Donna that they were coming. Donna hears suspicious noises coming from the goat house (Harry in particular isn't very keen on the accommodation provided as there's no trouser press available) so climbs onto to the roof and gives a rendition of the titular song 'Mamma Mia' while working up the nerve to lift up a hatch and have a look in. Shocked by the sight of the three former lovers she hasn't seen for 20 years, Donna falls through the hatch onto a handily placed inflatable mattress.

"Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you?
Mamma mia, does it show again?
My my, just how much I've missed you"
3. Donna, Rosie and Tanya (along with all the women on the island) make their way down to the harbour and leap into the sea.

Answer: Dancing Queen

Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski) - Donna's best friends and former bandmates - get the job of cheering her up after her unexpected encounter with her former lovers. The trio launch into one of ABBA's most famous numbers - the upbeat and cheery 'Dancing Queen' - and their dance out of Donna's hotel and down the path to the harbour attracts all of the women on the island to drop what they're doing and join the procession. The group end up on the quayside, where Donna gets shoved into the water and the rest of the women jump in to join her.

"You can dance, you can jive
Having the time of your life
See that girl, watch that scene
Dig in the dancing queen"
4. Bill, Harry and Sam each reminisce about their past romance with Donna while sailing around the island on Bill's boat.

Answer: Our Last Summer

Bill, Harry and Sam decamped to stay on Bill's boat after the debacle with Donna in the goat house. Fearing that they were leaving before she'd had a chance to determine which of them was her father, Sophie swam out to the boat and joined them on a sailing trip around the island. While there she got each of them to talk about how they met her mother and the adventures they'd shared with Donna during the summer before Sophie's birth. The soundtrack to this part of the film was a group rendition led by Harry (Colin Firth) of ABBA's quiet and reflective song 'Our Last Summer' from the 1980 album 'Super Trouper'.

"Our last summer
We could laugh and play
And now you're working in a bank
The family man, the football fan
And your name is Harry"
5. Sophie and Sky have a romantic moment together before his friends turn up to drag him off to his stag party.

Answer: Lay All Your Love on Me

Sophie is forced to make a quick departure from Bill's boat when she hears Sky calling for her from a nearby beach. She fails to work up the nerve to tell him about the presence of her potential fathers, but does end up gaining a romantic moment alone with her fiance instead. The couple use ABBA's 'Lay All Your Love On Me' to sing about their relationship and love for each other.

"Don't go wasting your emotion
Lay all your love on me"

Unfortunately they get interrupted by a group of Sky's friends who turn up to haul Sky off to his stag party (while taking the opportunity to perform an odd dance routine involving flippers).
6. At Sophie's hen party, Donna and the Dynamos return "for one night, and one night only".

Answer: Super Trouper

Donna, Rosie and Tanya reformed their old band Donna and the Dynamos to provide the entertainment at Sophie's hen night. The song they belted out was ABBA's immensely popular number one hit 'Super Trouper'.

"Super Trouper beams are gonna blind me
But I won't feel blue
Like I always do
'Cause somewhere in the crowd there's you"

The three were dressed up in costumes reminiscent of the Swedish band in their heyday and strutted their stuff on stage to the delight of both Donna's daughter and her three possible fathers (after the women's only celebration got invaded by the male contingent). It was during the party that the three men finally got the hint that they had potentially fathered the bride-to-be.
7. Tanya takes a trip to the beach and teases a young man named Pepper.

Answer: Does Your Mother Know

Tanya's trip to the beach isn't just a random opportunity to soak up some Greek sun. In fact it is a mission on Donna's behalf to interrogate Harry about his intentions in coming to Kalokairi and she corners him on a pedalo. He makes a quick escape once Tanya provides him with a hint that his role in proceedings should be to pay for the wedding, leaving Tanya to flirt with a young man named Pepper. The song 'Does Your Mother Know' provides the perfect lyrics (with some of the gender specific terms swapped round) for the scene where Tanya proceeds to point out Pepper's lack of sophistication and the fact that he is too young for her by tying a towel around him like a nappy.

"And I can chat with you baby
Flirt a little maybe
But does your mother know that you're out"
8. On their way to Sophie's wedding, Donna tells Sam about the pain she suffered when he left her to return to his fiancée.

Answer: The Winner Takes it All

Sophie and Sky's wedding takes place in a tiny chapel at the top of a steep hill accessed by a long set of steps. Donna gets held up en-route by Sam, who wants to rekindle their old relationship, and proceeds to give him a lengthy lecture (in the form of ABBA's 'The Winner Takes It All') about the heartbreak he caused her 20 years earlier.

"I don't wanna talk 'cause it makes me feel sad
And I understand you've come to shake my hand
I apologise if it makes you feel bad
Seeing me so tense, no self-confidence
But you see, the winner takes it all"

'The Winner Takes It All' was first released in 1980 and is about divorce. It is a particularly poignant song given that both of ABBA's married couples ended up getting divorced.
9. Sam makes an after-dinner speech following his and Donna's wedding.

Answer: When All is Said and Done

The outcome of the wedding was somewhat unexpected with the original bride and groom deciding they were too young to get married and that they'd prefer to go travelling instead. Sam then proposed to Donna (after she'd admitted to everyone in the church that she didn't know whether Bill, Harry or Sam was Sophie's father) and the pair immediately went through with the ceremony. At the party afterwards Sam gave (sang) a speech using the lyrics of the 1981 track 'When All Is Said and Done'.

"Here's to us
One more toast
And then we'll pay the bill"
10. Rosie tries to convince Bill that they'd make a good couple by strutting about on a table and clambering across a roof-top.

Answer: Take a Chance on Me

Once Sam's speech was over, Rosie got up (literally, onto the main table) to give one of her own - which was aimed squarely at getting her hands on Bill. She exhorted him to "take a chance on me" and as the song of the same name unfolded she chased Bill around Donna's hotel until he eventually caught her when she slipped off a roof.

"If you change your mind
I'm the first in line
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me"

The party ended when the raucous dancing causing the courtyard to rupture and "Aphrodite's Fountain" to spring up and soak all the guests. The final scene of the film showed Sophie and Sky sailing away to begin their new adventure to the sound of ABBA's 'I Have a Dream'.
