Men of Honor Trivia Quiz

This is an excellent movie based on the true life story of Carl Brashear. I really love this movie and didn't see any other quizzes on it, so I thought I'd make one. Enjoy and good luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who are the two leading actors in this movie?

Answer: Robert De Niro and Cuba Gooding, Jr.

Cuba Gooding, Jr. plays the man of determination, Carl Brashear, and Robert De Niro plays his ruthless training officer, Master Chief Sunday. Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman starred together in the movie "Rain Man", Tom Cruise and Kevin Bacon starred in "A Few Good Men", and Richard Gere and Louis Gossett, Jr. starred together in "An Officer and a Gentlemen". All movies of excellence, in my opinion.
2. What nickname does Master Chief Sunday call Carl?

Answer: Cookie

He calls him that because during their service together on the USS Hoist, the Chief remembered Carl as nothing more than a Navy cook.
3. How long did it take Carl to complete the assembly of the product flange during the last underwater test exercise at the Naval's divers training school?

Answer: 9 hrs. 31min.

It took Carl that long (longer than anyone else) because his tool bag was deliberately cut open before it was lowered down to him in the water, causing all his tools to be scattered about the ocean floor. This was done to stop Carl from completing the assembly of the product flange so he wouldn't be able to pass diving school.

However, Carl proves them wrong by finding every scattered tool and completing a perfect assembly of the product flange after a long cold 9 hrs. and 31 min. Talk about strong iron will, courage, and determination!
4. In the beginning of the movie, what did Carl's father ask of Carl to promise him?

Answer: not to end up like him

I believe the reason Carl's father asked him to make this promise was mainly because he didn't want his son to have to experience the same hardships as he had and not have anything to show for it, especially one's own self-respect and self-worth.
5. Carl was given the "Medal of Heroism" at the Naval diver's training school for saving another man's life.

Answer: false

Even though Carl was the one who saved another man's life, he wasn't given the medal simply because he was a black man. It was instead given to a white man whom, had it not been for Carl, would have left the other man to die.
6. Where were Carl and his wife, Jo, when they met each other for the first time?

Answer: library

Carl had went to the library to find someone to tutor him in order to pass his diver's written exam, and this is when and where he met Jo, who he eventually married. During their first meeting together, she asks Carl why it is that he wants this so badly (meaning to become a diver)? He tells her, "Because they said I couldn't have it." He was definitely a determined man.
7. What did Carl's father give to him that Carl held close to him with such great value?

Answer: his hand-made radio

Carl's father had made a radio with his own hands that he gave to Carl right before Carl boarded the bus to leave for the Navy. This meant a great deal to Carl knowing that it was something his father had treasured and made with his own hands. There's a part in the movie where Master Chief Sunday gets angry with Carl and picks up the radio and throws it to where it lands on the floor and breaks into pieces.

However, he's also the one who puts it back together for Carl out of respect when he saw and realized the determination of iron will and courage that Carl's father had instilled in him.
8. Why did Carl decide to have his leg amputated?

Answer: both of these

Carl had injured his leg in an accident aboard a Navy ship and wasn't going to be able to dive again with it that way, so he was removed from full active duty. Master Chief Sunday sent him an article while he was still in the hospital that read that pilots with injured limbs had requested amputation, and once they were fitted with the right prosthesis, they were able to return to full active duty. So, Carl decided to have his leg amputated in order to
return to full active duty and dive again for the chance to make Master Diver, with once again proving just how courageous of a man he was.
9. After Carl had his leg amputated, he had to prove he could take a certain number of steps while wearing a 290 pound U.S. Navy diver's diving suit before he could be re-instated to full active duty. How many steps was he required to take?

Answer: 12

I believe this to be the best part of the movie and yet the saddest part as well. (Possibly because no matter how many times I've watched this movie, it makes me cry every time). In this scene, Carl proves yet once again his pure determination of courage and absolute iron-will of being the best of what he wants to be. With a bit of encouraging and demanding words from Master Chief Sunday... "I want my twelve Cookie!", Carl does indeed take all twelve steps resulting in his being re-instated to full active duty.
10. Did Carl eventually achieve his goal in becoming a Master Diver?

Answer: yes

At the end of the movie, it reads that Carl Brashear became the first amputee in U.S. Navy history to return to full active duty and that he became the first African-American to become a Master Diver.
Well, that's it, I hope you enjoyed the quiz and the movie.
