The film begins with the diners arriving to the marina to board a boat that will take them to the chef's private island, where not only he, but his entire staff, live and work. Upon arriving on the island they are given a tour of the grounds by the maître d', Elsa.

It is revealed early on that the main character, Margot, was not supposed to be attending the dinner, but that she was paid to attend with Tyler, played by Nicholas Hoult. Through her connection to another diner it is revealed she is a paid escort.

The guests are excited to see tortillas in the third course, especially after their second course was the 'Breadless Bread Plate', but they quickly got a rude awakening when they discovered how they had been personalized. One of the most tense and humorous early moments in the film is during this course, when the three businessmen demand to know what the laser printed-tortillas are all about and the maître d' simply keeps telling them only that "they're tortillas".

Answer: He commits suicide in front of the diners.

It becomes immediately apparent, as the staff begin laying out a plastic tarp between the diners and the kitchen, that the forthcoming course has something unexpected in store. What no one expects, however, is for the sous chef to deliver a speech about his passion for cooking and excellence, coupled with the realization that he will never be as good as the chef, Julian, thus prompting him to shoot himself.

The mess he creates is quickly tidied up by the other cooks, who immediately serve the next plated course once his body has been removed.

Answer: A female guest has her finger cut off.

No female diners have their fingers removed during the meal, but that cannot be said of Richard's character, who is identified as a wealthy regular of the chef's who doesn't truly care about the food, only the prestige. All of the male guests are caught by the staff who are chasing them down, with a special dish being awarded to the guest who stayed hidden the longest. During the fifth course, the chef is stabbed by a line cook before the men are told to try and escape, leaving the women to return to the restaurant to talk inside.

The chef reveals, throughout the dinner, that the guests are all there because they have contributed to him losing his passion for cooking and food. Because Margot was not intended to be there, and because he can tell she is a service worker like him and his staff, he gives her this choice.

Tyler is a self-proclaimed 'foodie' who truly knows little about what it actually takes to thoughtfully prepare and concoct a delicious dish. When confronted by the chef, he admits that, because he was so desperate to try the chef's food, he knowingly accepted the invitation, knowing that he and his date would die. Margot slaps him out of anger and the rest of the guests simply stare at him in shock and disgust.

The chef invites him into the kitchen to cook for them, thus revealing his ineptitude.

When the final dish is proven to be horrendous, the chef whispers in his ear and he leaves the kitchen.

Answer: Tries to flee on the staff motorboat

Before leaving the restaurant, Margot is seen walking by a back storeroom where she sees Tyler's body hanging from the rafters. Elsa, the maître d', attacks Margot out of jealousy and she is killed in self-defense. While Margot is able to connect with the Coast Guard, the man who ends up arriving, under the guise of helping them escape, is revealed to be a paid member of the staff.

The staff have adorned the floor with melted chocolate and crushed graham crackers, before pouring an accelerant on the floor beneath the chef's feet. Each of the guests is adorned with a distinguished looking chocolate hat and a capelet made of marshmallows. Chef Julian grabs hot coals from the grill in his hands, delivers a final farewell, and then drops the embers to ignite himself, thus turning the entire restaurant into an incinerator. Before this final dish they were also ironically given 'gift bags' to presumably take home with them.

Answer: cheeseburger and french fries

Chef Julian is very moved by her request for a cheeseburger, commenting that he knew exactly how to make it the best. In this moment he sees her as someone who understands him, earning her the meal, which she enjoys on the Coast Guard boat while watching the restaurant burn.
