Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the post-match party Tina has thrown, she is perturbed to see Derek (who she refers to rather unkindly as "scruffy boy") associating with Whittier. On finding out Derek is a DJ, Tina describes the "logical order to the college universe" to Whittier, advising that she needs to choose between the team or Derek. Which of the following does Tina place at the very bottom of the college universe?

Answer: Cafeteria Workers

Props to Bree Turner, who plays head cheerleader Tina, for her flawless execution of the list. I can only imagine it took her quote some time to learn off by heart! Here is her view of the college universe...

"See, way up here at the top of the ladder are football players. They rule. Just underneath them are basketball players, smaller biceps but still desirable. Then, soccer hunks, lacrosse studs, fraternity presidents, ohh, fraternity keg-masters, guys with cars with parking passes, guys with cars without parking passes kind of a waste of time. Black Student Union activists, Bruce Lee fan clubbers, lit-mag squares, pep-band dorks, um, film society toads, campus ministers, school mascots, and then, God, all the way at the bottom are campus D.J.'s. One spot above cafeteria workers".

As Tina finishes her speech, Derek advises her "Actually, I work at the cafeteria too". Tina then reminds Whittier of their discussion the other day (about Whittier having the potential to become head cheerleader), and gets her to decide between the cheerleading squad and Derek. She chooses the cheerleading squad, and Derek leaves, clearly upset.
2. Having quit the cheerleading squad, Whittier consoles herself with a hot dog whilst watching the school Women's softball team who aren't very good. Whittier taps in to the beat of which of the following, resulting in her creating an impromptu cheer for the team?

Answer: Water sprinkler

Whittier starts tapping her finger to the beat of the water sprinkler, and initiates a simple "Come on y'all let's hear it, we got Stinger spirit" amongst the crowd. It seems to work, and the team achieve a double out on the very next play.
3. Buoyed by her success in encouraging the Women's softball team to perform better, Whittier finds Monica and tells her "We're gonna start our own squad". How many people turn up to the girls' audition?

Answer: 1

We see Whittier and Monica blaming each other for no-one showing up to the audition which was due to take place "an hour and a half ago" when all of sudden they hear someone coming. Unfortunately the sole auditionee is the same awkward lanky chap, whose dancing skills left a lot to be desired, who was one of the auditionees for the Stinger squad towards the beginning of the movie.
4. Despite their disappointing audition effort, Whittier and Monica don't give up, and end up putting together a cheerleading team that consists of which of the following?

Answer: The extracurricular groups from whom Dean Sebastian cut funding

When dejectedly walking from their disastrous audition, the girls come across a group of people chanting. The extracurricular groups that lost their practice space when the dean took away their funding have banded together and are protesting outside the dean's office, making their feelings known. Whittier and Monica manage to convince the somewhat reluctant groups to form a new cheerleading squad on campus by informing them that if they are good, go to nationals and win, they will receive a check for $20,000.
5. What is the first sport that the newly formed Renegades cheerleading squad cheer for?

Answer: Croquet

We see the Renegades huddled together, with Francis (played by Dennis Hemphill Jr.) leading them in a prayer for their debut as a spirit squad, adding that "this is a big sporting event for us". We then see a wide shot which includes a banner that reads "7th Annual Student/Faculty Fundraising Croquet Tournament", and the Renegades do their best to gee the players on. Unfortunately the new squad doesn't appear to have much in the way of rhythm, until Derek turns up with a massive speaker on the back of his truck, giving them the beat they need to look and sound like a real cheer-leading squad.
6. Whittier is successful in persuading Dean Sebastian that there should be a competition between her Renegades squad and Tina's Varsity team, with the winner representing the school at nationals. However her excitement is soon quashed when Dean Sebastian advises that the competition will be held when?

Answer: The day after tomorrow

Having heard Whittier's plea for a competition (and associated threat that the student body will hold round-the-clock protests outside his door if he doesn't agree), Dean Sebastian says "I think it's a splendid idea. We'll have a competition in the field house this coming Saturday", to which Whittier exclaims "What? Wait, that's the day after tomorrow". Looks like the Renegades have got some serious training to do!
7. We are treated to a news special from CSC News Eye On Sports, fronted by Colleen Lipman, that focuses on the forthcoming cheerleading showdown. Which of the following characters is NOT shown giving an interview to camera?

Answer: Derek

Tina gives a very confident speech to camera whilst her squad are doing press-ups in the background, followed by Marni's less-than-calm assertion that the competition is "very important" whilst the squad are practising their pyramids. We then flick to the Renegades, who are shown cheering for the fencing team. Whittier confidently assures the watching viewers that they are ready, saying "It's gonna be tough but, you know, Rocky beat Apollo Creed, right", which she is then advised is not the case. We then see Penelope give a short speech to camera in her usual style of anguish, summarising with a cheerful "Why bother? In a billion years we'll all be obliterated by a black hole anyway". Derek is not seen during the news special
8. During an altercation between the two squads as the Renegades are finishing their late night practice, which two characters receive injuries?

Answer: Marni (Varsity) and Francis (Renegades)

Marni and Monica get involved in a war of words, and end up tussling. Francis steps in to try to break them up, but ends up inadvertently hitting Marni in the face. Marni retaliates by swinging a big right hook at Francis, catching him square in the face and causing him to fall awkwardly to the ground.

In the next scene we learn that Francis not only has a black eye, but has broken his hand, causing the Renegades a major problem, as they are now a man down. Luckily for the Renegades, Greg from the Varsity squad comes in and offers to be a sub, potentially costing him his scholarship.

In the very next scene we see the squads preparing for the competition, and see Marni desperately trying to cover up the black eye she suffered in the scuffle.
9. What are the Renegades wearing when they start their routine during the competition?

Answer: Monks' habits

As the Renegades come onto the stage dressed as monks, we hear the crowd shout "Nice outfits", "You guys suck", and "Monks can't cheer". The crowd's cynicism is soon quashed, however, when the Renegades begin their routine, which incorporates aspects from the team members' interests, such as martial arts, ballet, and musical theatre.
10. Do the Renegades win the competition?

Answer: Yes

The Varsity squad are clearly distraught following their defeat by the upstart Renegades squad, and soon start bickering amongst themselves. Tina approaches Whittier and graciously says "I just wanted to say nice job, your routine was good," quickly following that up with a less-gracious "inconsistent and a tad pedestrian at times, but good".

The girls are interrupted by Dean Sebastian, who gives Whittier "the full backing of the college" and says that it will be a thrill to work with the new varsity squad. Whittier then offers Tina a sub spot on her team, as long as she auditions first. Tina says "I don't audition" before trying desperately to soft-soap Whittier with compliments and offers of hanging out as the movie ends.
