Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A suicidal wife's spirit possesses the equipment of a fitness gym. The equipment causes accidents that kill the patrons of the gym. What movie is this?

Answer: Death Spa

This film had limited showings in Grindhouse Theaters. William Bumiller plays the owner of the haunted gym. William portrays Sean McCullough on "Guiding Light". Shari Shattuck plays Catherine, his deceased wife. Shari portrayed Ashley Abbott Howard on "The Young and the Restless" for six seasons. Fans of blood soaked entertainment will relish the various deaths by possessed objects. My personal favorite is the man that gets attacked by a dead swordfish!
2. This film opens with a badly burned professor whose face is covered up. He recounts his tale of the events leading up to his accident. He goes hiking with a wilderness expedition group. They land in the path of a Bigfoot monster that proceeds to tear them apart. What is this film?

Answer: Night of the Demon

This was one of the video nasties, a series of films banned for their graphic content. I can understand all the rage over this. This film has to be the goriest Bigfoot film ever. Let me know if there's another Bigfoot flick that surpasses the gruesome content this contains. Michael Cutt plays the professor.
3. A patron of a drive in kills moviegoers while they're watching a film at the same drive in. He uses a long sword as his weapon of choice. What is this movie?

Answer: Drive In Massacre

It's quite ironic this was shown at drive-ins during the '70s. No one got hurt, though I'm sure they wanted their money back after viewing this poorly done film. It's quite laughably bad; a product of its time. Newton Naushaus (sounds like nausea!) portrays Austin, the drive-in owner.

He's one of the most slanderous characters in movies. He even insults investigating officers on their weight.
4. This low budget oddity starts off with a bang as a man is set on fire. From that incident, a teenager visits his ailing uncle. He lives next to the set of a movie being shot. The script from this film comes alive. It kills his friends by enacting the death scenes the way they're written. What is this movie?

Answer: Death By Dialogue

Theodore Leman plays Uncle Ive. He also portrays Walker on "Roots: The Next Generation". R.J. Walker plays Thorn, the hero trying to save his friends. R.J. portrays Lieutenant Frank Howard in "Living To Die". "Death By Dialogue" is a very cheesy flick. I feel the silly moments are what makes it unique.
5. This is a drive-in double feature from the '70s. A serial murderer develops an obsession with a child. She is forced by the killer to accompany him during his killing spree. The next film has a wife with romantic visions that ruin her marriage. She seeks help from the descendant of an evil queen, who causes the wife to commit gruesome murders. What double feature is this?

Answer: I Dismember Mama/The Blood Spattered Bride

This double feature has an interesting trailer promotion. A moviegoer goes insane after watching these two films. As a news reporter is questioning him about the movies, the police drag him away. Other movie patrons comment on the movies as this is happening. The film titles fade in and out during the trailer. This trailer helped the movies achieve notoriety.
6. A woman is raped and beaten repeatedly by dim witted thugs. She's left for dead and survives. She determines to get her revenge on the thugs. She slaughters the assailants very gruesomely. What is this notorious exploitation film?

Answer: I Spit On Your Grave

This controversial drive-in classic achieved immediate infamy for its prolonged attacks on a defenseless woman. It influenced many "woman-avenges-rape" type of horror films. Camilla Keaton plays Jennifer Hills, the attack victim and avenger. She reprises the same character in the sequel "Savage Vengeance: I Spit On Your Grave 2".
7. Stranded travelers are offered shelter in a beautiful woman's mansion. They don't know she's actually a succubus. She stalks the guests and drains their souls. What is this Giallo called?

Answer: The Devil's Nightmare

Giallo is a term for a genre of horror films shot with a baroque visual style. It was created by Italian film directors during the '60s. It later was popularized by directors Dario Argento and Mario Bava, giving it a dream-like style. Erika Blanc portrays the succubus, Lisa Muller. Erika has roles in other Giallio films including the drive-in staple "The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave".

She's of Italian and Belgian descent.
8. This spoof of horror films deals with a lawnmower that goes berserk. It attacks the residents of a golf club. A golf tournament champion teams up with the owner of the lodge. They attempt to destroy the possessed lawnmower and save the residents. What is the name of this spoof?

Answer: Blades

The director spoofs "Jaws" with a lawnmower as the shark. The golf resort replaces the beach. This theatrical release from Troma is disappointing with the laughs. It plays a lot more seriously than one would expect from a Troma film.
9. In another theatrical Troma release, a group of teenagers stay at a fishing lodge. A killer is lurking there as well. He dispatches his victims via a fishing hook he casts out. It grabs onto swimmers in a lake, instantly killing them. What is this film called?

Answer: Blood Hook

The fish hook is most certainly an unusual weapon for a killer to use. This one's lighter on the laughs for a Troma fare, though I guess some may find the fish hook weapon a bit silly. It has good atmospheric music as well, increasing the tension at times.
10. This film centers around an Egyptian caterer. He kills his customers, then harvests their organs, to help a cult awaken an Egyptian princess. What film is often labeled as the first to use explicit gore?

Answer: Blood Feast

Herschell Gordon Lewis pioneered the graphic style of gore for the future of horror films. He has directed other drive-in hits, like "Gruesome Twosome", "Two Thousand Maniacs", and "Color Me Blood Red". He returned in 2002 with the follow up "Blood Feast 2: All You Can Eat". Mal Arnold plays Fuad Ramses in "Blood Feast". J.P Dealhoussey portrays Fuad Ramses' grandson in "Blood Feast 2: All You Can Eat".
