Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Name the film that tells the story of a slave revolt against the Roman Republic circa 79 CE. The film contains great scenes of gladiatorial combat, several scenes detailing the building and training of the slave army, and a climactic battle sequence between the rebels and three Roman armies.

Answer: Spartacus

"Spartacus", directed by Stanley Kubrick and produced by and starring Kirk Douglas as Spartacus, film has been highly regarded since it was released in 1960. Also starring Lawrence Olivier, Jean Simmons, Tony Curtis, and Peter Ustinov, the film is one of the classic, "sword and sandal" epics popular in the 1950s and 1960s.
2. A remake of a silent film from the 1920s, this movie depicts Jewish rebels trying to drive the Romans out of Judea in the first century CE. Battle scenes include an attack on Pontius Pilate's legion as he arrives near Jerusalem to become the governor, and an unsuccessful attempt by rebels to take the Governor's Palace in Jerusalem. Can you name the movie?

Answer: King Of Kings

While the main story in "King of Kings" is the life of Jesus, the excellent battle scenes qualify this film to be included in this quiz. Starring Jeffrey Hunter, Hurd Hatfield, Harry Guardino and Rip Torn, the film was nicknamed, "I was a Teenage Jesus" by some critics.
3. Can you identify another film firmly in the "sword and sandal" mold, this epic from 1962 depicts the stand made by the Greeks at the pass of Thermopylae against an overwhelming Persian army in 480 BCE. Can you identify this movie?

Answer: The 300 Spartans

Sometimes bombastic in the portrayal of the noble, honest Greeks versus the imperialistic, simple, and obedient Persian hordes, "The 300 Spartans" is an entertaining film which gets enough of the history correct, such as the inclusion of Greek soldiers from other cities, and not only Sparta. The battle scenes, while tame by today's standards, are well done and exciting.
4. Almost a modern-day sword and sandal epic, this 2004 movie chronicles the life of King Alexander of Macedonia, from adolescence to his early death at 32. Battles depicted include his defeat of the Persians at Gaugemela and the Battle of the Hydapses in India. What is this movie called?

Answer: Alexander

Oliver Stone's sprawling epic, "Alexander", starring Colin Farrell as Alexander the Great, manages to hit most of the marks in portraying what is known about the historical Macedonian king, whose ambitions were as large as the world he tried to conquer. The battle scenes are exciting and beautifully filmed.
5. A new perspective on an old legend, this film depicts the Invasion of Britain by the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes during the crumbling of Roman rule in the 5th century CE. One of the largest scenes is a lively and imaginative depiction of the Battle of Mons Badonicus (Badon Hill). Do you know what this movie is called?

Answer: King Arthur

I have actually read reviews of "King Arthur", a 2004 film stating that it is "revisionist, and gets the history all wrong". Wow! All that aside, I found the idea that Arthur and his knights were elite warriors transplanted to Britain from Roman provinces in Eastern Europe to be intriguing, especially since we have no firm proof that such a man even existed.
6. This next movie is another larger-than-life epic, as befits the subject matter, the Trojan War, in which the Greek city-states of Mycenae and Sparta lead the rest of the Greek cities in a war to avenge the kidnapping of Helen, Queen of Sparta by The Trojan prince Paris. The battles are bloody, the heroes are properly heroic, and you can feel for the Trojans and their inevitable fate. Can you name this picture?

Answer: Troy

An ambitious retelling of Homer's Iliad, which tells the story of the Trojan War circa 1200 BCE, "Troy", despite a good cast including Brad Pitt as Achilles, Sean Bean as Odysseus, Eric Bana as Hector, Orlando Bloom as Paris, and Diane Kruger as Helen, somehow fell short with the critics and the public alike. Still, the battles were sufficiently bloody and action filled, as ancient warfare should be on film.
7. Set during the period of the Third Crusade, circa 1186-1188 CE, this fictionalized film has a brutal depiction of the 1187 Siege of Jerusalem by Saladin. What is the name of this film?

Answer: Kingdom of Heaven

A somewhat fanciful, though not completely unbelievable, tale of a French blacksmith, devastated by his wife's recent suicide after the death of their child, being recruited by his noble lord of a father to go to the Holy Land and assume his role as heir. Orlando Bloom plays the somewhat too virtuous knight Balian, who leads the defense of Jerusalem against the overwhelming strength of the Muslim armies.
8. Set in a divided England during the Viking Age, this film tells the story of Alfred of Wessex, the only English king to be called "The Great". Surviving a Viking invasion and on the run a good deal of the time, Alfred skillfully maintains his kingdom's independence and defends his people. The title of the movie is?

Answer: Alfred the Great

Released in 1969, "Alfred the Great" was generally faithful to the story of one of England's greatest kings, a man who wasn't meant to be king. The untimely deaths of his older brothers made Alfred king, even though his real passion was the church. Even so, he showed a remarkable military prowess and kept his kingdom independent against great odds. Starring David Hemmings and Michael York.
9. An Academy Award winning story of a Scottish knight who leads a rebellion against the English king Edward I in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. The battle scenes are well presented and gory, as a good medieval battle should be. Those of us who like historical accuracy were disappointed, but even we must admit it was an entertaining movie. Can you identify this epic?

Answer: Braveheart

Though filled with inaccuracies which drove serious history buffs mad, "Braveheart", released in 1995, was nevertheless an entertaining film which did spur a worldwide interest in Scottish history. Filmed in Ireland and directed by Mel Gibson, who also stars as William Wallace, "Braveheart" was a well made film with beautiful cinematography and good performances by Brendan Gleason, Patrick McGoohan, and James Cosmo.
10. Another film that won the Oscar for Best Picture, this movie starts off with a huge scene of the Roman Army fighting Germanic tribesmen before becoming a story of betrayal, murder, and ultimately revenge. Name this popular film.

Answer: Gladiator

An updated version of the 1964 movie, "The Fall of the Roman Empire", "Gladiator" is a modern epic that tells the fictional story of Roman general Maximus who, after winning the film's opening battle against the Germanic tribes, is condemned to death by the new Emperor Commodus for remaining loyal to Commudos' father, Marcus Aurelius, whom Commudos murders. Maximus proves harder to kill than expected, however. Starring Russell Crowe as General Maximus and Joaquin Phoenix as the Emperor Commudos, "Gladiator" stands out for its action scenes.
11. In another epic film from the early 1960s, Rodrigo de Vivar, a Spanish knight better known as El Cid, reconquers Moorish held territory for the Spanish king in the 14th century. The film features an exciting depiction of the Siege of Valencia. See if you can name this larger than life take.

Answer: El Cid

An epic 1961 production, "El Cid" stars Charlton Heston as El Cid and Sophia Loren as his wife Dona Ximena. The film was praised as the best epic since Ben-Hur by critics. It is true to the facts that El Cid fought for both the Christians and the Moors and was respected and admired by both sides.
12. One of my all-time favorite action movies, this film tells the fictional story of Ragnar the Viking and his sons Einar and Eric and their conflict with English king Aella. A rousing account of Viking life and the scene of the assault on Aella's castle make for prime entertainment for fans of the genre. From the description given, can you name the film?

Answer: The Vikings

This 1958 movie, simply titled, The Vikings", starred Kirk Douglas as Einar, the legitimate son of King Ragnar, played by Earnest Borgnine. Tony Curtis played Erik, Ragnar's son by an English queen, whom he had raped after killing the king in an earlier raid. Erik has, around his neck, the pommel stone of the English king's sword, by which he is recognized as Ragnar's son by an English lord in league with the Vikings.

The capture of the Welsh princess Morgana, played by Janet Leigh, brings the conflict between Einar and Erik to a head.
13. This film is about a Viking seeking a huge golden bell, reputed to be somewhere on the North African coast near the lands of the Moors. He recruits a crew to search for the treasure, but they are captured by the Moorish leader, who also wants the bell. Mansuh then forces Rolfe and his men to get the bell for him. Can you name the film?

Answer: The Long Ships

"The Long Ships", released in 1964, stars Richard Widmark as Rolfe, a Viking seeking a great golden bell along the North African coast. He is captured by the Moorish King Mansuh, played by Sidney Poitier, and tortured to reveal his knowledge of the bell. Rolfe escapes and returns to his homeland, where he steals King Harald Bluetooth's funeral ship, recruits a drunken crew, and returns to Africa. Captured again by Mansuh, he and his crew find the bell and bring it back to the Moorish city, where King Harald and his men are waiting in secret.
14. This movie tells a fictional story of a Norman warlord, Chrysagon, in charge of a coastal village and stone keep in 11th century Flanders. Chrysagon and his men arrive in the village during a raid by the Frisians, whose boy prince is captured by the Normans. The Frisians lay siege to the keep, joined by the villagers, who are angered by Chrysagon's affair with a village girl. And the title is?

Answer: The War Lord

This 1965 film stars Charlton Heston as Chrysagon, Rosemary Forsyth as Bronwyn, James Farentino as Marc, and Guy Stockwell as Chrysagon's younger brother Draco. Upon arriving at the village, Chrysagon encounters Bronwyn and saves her from his men, but becomes obsessed with her.

She is to be married to Marc, the village elder's son. Chrysagon claims the right of the first night, but Bronwyn stays on her own, setting off the conflict with the villagers. Draco reports the incident to the Duke of Normandy, and is given the holding in Chrysagon's place. Draco and his men break the Frisian siege.
15. Containing one of the largest medieval battle scenes ever filmed, the 1314 Battle of Bannockburn, in which the Scots finally won their independence from the English after some 30 years of domination and interference in the Scottish succession, this acclaimed film tells a fairly accurate account of Robert the Bruce's rise to become King of Scotland. What is this movie's title?

Answer: The Bruce

"The Bruce" was released in 1996. Starring Sandy Welch, Brian Blessed, and Oliver Reed, the film is more accurate than most purported "historical" movies, and gives a good account of the life of one of Scotland's greatest heroes. The Battle of Bannockburn sequence is very well done, brutal, gory, and heart- pounding.
