Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you crossed Yul Brynner with an optometrist, what movie could he have made?

Answer: The King and Eye

In the 1956 movie "The King and I" which stars Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr, Yul Brynner plays the role of the King of Siam. Deborah Kerr plays the role of Anna, the English governess who has agreed to teach English to the members of his household. The ongoing interaction between the two in this excellent musical ensures that this movie remains one of Hollywood's greats. Unfortunately however, and even as late as 2012, this film remains banned in Thailand (Siam) because of that country's disapproval of the manner in which the King of Siam was presented in the film. "The King and I" was nominated for nine Oscars.

It won five of these, including Best Actor, Best Costumes and Best Music.
2. If Clark Gable had been mixed with a can of baked beans, which of his great movies would have been the most appropriate?

Answer: Gone With The Wind

Considered one of the greatest movies ever made, the 1939 "Gone With the Wind" stars Clark Gable as the dashing Rhett Butler, and Vivien Leigh as the spoiled southern belle. It is a love story as tumultuous as the historical period in which it was set.

This was the American Civil War and the reconstruction period which followed afterwards. The relationship between Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler is much the same as that between the American north and the south at that time - extremely volatile. This powerful film won an astonishing number of Academy Awards, ten in all, with every one fully deserved.
3. If Charlton Heston had been crossed with a banana, which of the following films would have best suited him?

Answer: Planet of the Apes

The 1968 production of "Planet of the Apes" is an excellent film with a startling and thought provoking ending. A group of astronauts who have awakened after a long period in suspended animation in space, land on a planet some time in the future. They find that this world is ruled by apes, and that humans are looked upon by them as a lower animal species. Charlton Heston plays Taylor, the hero of the piece.

He is subsequently captured by the apes and shot in the throat during the event, an act that removes his power of speech. Of the other two astronauts who survive with him, one is killed and stuffed, and the other is lobotomised. Two sympathetic ape scientists help Taylor to find his way to an area of safety.

It is here that the film's most powerful scene takes place.
4. Crossing Orson Welles with an incorrectly spelled walking aid gives you which movie?

Answer: Citizen Kane

Such was the impact this film made, the 1941 "Citizen Kane" was nominated for nine Academy Awards. Years later, it still packs a punch whenever it is shown. Though Orson Welles never confirmed this, the film is believed to be loosely based on the life of the eccentric millionaire William Randolph Hearst.

It stars Orson Welles in the lead role and tells the story of the rise, corruption and decline of a great media tycoon. On its release, Hearst, who was a huge figure in the world of newspaper publishing at that time, banned any mention of the film in his papers.

He also exerted enormous pressure on theatres not to show the film, so successfully in fact that it almost failed on its release.
5. If Judy Garland had married an Australian, what would have been the most suitable movie for her?

Answer: The Wizard of Oz

Starring Judy Garland as the wide-eyed, innocent Dorothy, "The Wizard of Oz" is a truly delightful romp through fantasy and music and song. Judy plays a young girl lost in the fairy-tale land of Oz. All she wants is to find her way back home to Kansas.

A century after the book was written by L.F. Baum and illustrated by W.W. Denslow in 1900, this wonderful story has been portrayed in at least five films, one television series, comics, a stage play and three musicals. The 1939 film version is the most popular.

There is indeed something magical about the wonderful land of Oz.
6. When Dustin Hoffman was mixed with a college degree, what movie was the result?

Answer: The Graduate

In this excellent dramatic comedy, Dustin Hoffman plays the lead role of Ben, an extremely reluctant toy boy straight out of college. The brilliant Anne Bancroft is perfect in her portrayal of the middle-aged married woman out for a good time with no strings attached. That is of course until her daughter steps into the picture and Ben promptly falls in love with her.

Then all hell breaks loose. Watching this very funny movie years after its release is still a real treat.
7. If you mixed Gary Cooper with a heat wave, what movie would have suited him best?

Answer: High Noon

Gary Cooper plays the role of Marshal Kane in this 1952 movie. Recently retired from the job, he is looking forward to his new life as a storekeeper. All seems to promise a happy future, with a new wife in tow, until an outlaw with a grudge against Kane rides into town.

At first Kane leaves town at the behest of his new wife, but then, determined to protect others from the future actions of the outlaw, he returns to see his destiny through to its conclusion. His wife threatens to leave him, and the townspeople refuse to help, so Kane must face the outlaws alone. Or does he?
8. Crossing Tom Hanks with Cadbury's would give you which movie?

Answer: Forrest Gump

This 1994 story revolves around an innocent minded man, some of the major events in American history in which he takes parts, and all the lives he touched. Included in this tale is Forrest's love for Jenny, the only friend from his youth. It's a funny, sad and heart-warming tale, super-imposed on real media clips from America's post Second World War period. These include the Vietnam War, the hippie movement, and the destructive events around the 1974 Hurricane Carmen. Hanks wasn't the first choice for this role, nor the second. Both John Travolta and Bill Murray, incredibly so, turned it down. The film went on to win six Oscars, including the Best Actor for Hanks.

(The clue in the question refers to the much-quoted line: "Life is like a box of chocolates...")
9. If Kate Winslet had been crossed with a dinghy, what movie could she have produced?

Answer: Titanic

A wonderful movie, based on the sinking of the ship Titanic in 1912, this 1997 version of the story starred Leonardo diCaprio and Kate Winslet as the two main characters. What makes this movie such an outstanding success is the painstaking attention to all the historically accurate sets, the dishes served, the linens, clothing, everything.

The historical portrayal of some members of the crew leaves much to be desired however, particularly the shabby way in which some have been portrayed. Otherwise, this brilliant film beautifully traces the tragic fate of the great liner and its passengers on its maiden voyage.

The haunting musical score which echoes throughout the film is also exquisite.
10. If Jack Nicholson had been crossed with an aviary, what movie would be the most suitable for him?

Answer: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

This engrossing drama, made in 1975, won five major Academy Awards - Best Picture, Actor, Actress, Screenplay and Director. There is not one second of the story, which is set in a mental institution, which releases its grip on the audience. Prisoner Randle McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) has been sent there for evaluation. McMuphy has manipulated this deliberately to get out of a prison term of hard labour.

He thinks a stint in a hospital environment will be a nice relaxing way to carry out his sentence instead. Once there however, he immediately clashes with the head nurse, Mildred Ratched (Louise Fletcher), and provokes her time after time with a number of escapades involving his fellow inmates.

The film concludes with a shocking and thought-provoking ending.
