Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (1983) Arnie is your basic high school geek, who really has only one friend. He falls in love with a bright red, '58 Plymouth Fury and spends hours restoring her to her former glory. Before too long people start noticing changes in Arnie, some of them good, some not. And strangely enough, anyone who messes with Arnie turns up mysteriously dead.

Answer: Christine

John Carpenter directed this horror film. Apparently all '58 Plymouth Furies were made banana yellow, but there was reference made to the fact that this one had been special ordered in red. These cars are quite rare now, and fans were infuriated when several were destroyed during filming. Although not all the cars destroyed were actual '58 Furies.
2. (1995) Kathy Bates is terrific as a woman who is wrongfully charged with the murder of her employer. When she is arrested, her estranged daughter, now a big time, New York City reporter, comes home for the first time in years. As mother and daughter get to know each other again, dark secrets from their shared past surface, secrets so painful that they've been repressed for years. Soon we learn that Bates' character has indeed committed murder, but only to protect her daughter from the father who was abusing her.

Answer: Dolores Claiborne

Taylor Hackford directed this excellent interpretation of an excellent book. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judy Parfitt and Christopher Plummer also starred. The movie was filmed in Nova Scotia, Canada. Jennifer became sea sick during the scene that was shot on the ferry, and a local high school student was pulled out of class to act as her stand in.
3. (1984) A couple of college students earn a few extra dollars by participating in some medical experiments, run by the government. At the end of the tests they find that they have each developed some telekinetic abilities, which sometimes come in handy. But it's the child that they have together that has the real power, and the government is willing to do just about anything to get their hands on her.

Answer: Firestarter

Mark Lester directed this movie that starred David Keith, Drew Barrymore, Heather Locklear, Martin Sheen, George C. Scott, Art Carney and Louise Fletcher. John Carpenter was originally slated to direct but the studio removed him from the project. He claims he was removed because his film 'The Thing' was such a flop.
4. (1999) After years of working death row, Paul Edgecomb and his team have seen the worst that human beings have to offer. So they are totally unprepared to deal with John Coffey, a man who is not only innocent, but has the amazing power of healing.

Answer: The Green Mile

Frank Darabont directed this wonderful film starring Tom Hanks, David Morse, Bonnie Hunt and Michael Clarke Duncan, to name a few. Coffey appears to tower over everyone, when in fact the actor is less than an inch taller than Morse. Although the guards in the movie all wear uniforms, they weren't actually introduced into the prison system until years after the movie was set.
5. (1980) Jack Torrance has had some troubles in his life, but he's determined to turn himself around, and make things better for his wife and psychically-sensitive son. Unfortunately he takes the job of caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, in the mountains of Colorado, a hotel that has a long history of violence.

Answer: The Shining

The scariest part of this movie was waiting for things from the book that never happened. It was also frustrating to have Dick Holloran overcome many obstacles to respond to Danny's shining, only to have him take an axe to the chest as soon as he got there. Apparently the director, Stanley Kubrick, would phone Stephen King up in the middle of the night to ask him questions like, 'Do you believe in God?'
6. (1990) Paul Sheldon is a successful author who is rescued from a car wreck by his 'number one fan'. When she finds out that he's planning on killing off his popular heroine, so that he can stop writing romantic stories, her anger is something to be feared.

Answer: Misery

Kathy Bates won an Oscar for her portrayal of Annie Wilkes, under Rob Reiner's direction. James Caan played the luckless Paul Sheldon. There is a reference made to 'a guy who went mad in a hotel nearby', which is a reference to 'The Shining'.
7. (1996) After accidentally killing an old gypsy woman, an overweight lawyer has a curse put on him, and starts losing weight. At first this seems wonderful, but soon he can't stop losing weight, no matter what he does. If the curse isn't lifted soon, he is going to die.

Answer: Thinner

Tom Holland directed this movie that starred Robert John Burke, Lucinda Jenney, Joe Mantegna and Michael Constantine. Stephen King has a cameo as Dr. Bangor. This is one of the books written by King under the name of Richard Bachman.
8. (1985) Three King short stories are drawn together by a mysterious grey tabby cat. A tennis player, caught fooling around with a mobster's wife, is forced to play a deadly game. A man signs up with a clinic that guarantees it will help him stop smoking. And a young girl is terrorized by monsters.

Answer: Cat's Eye

Lewis Teague directed this movie starring James Woods, Drew Barrymore and Alan King. King, who wrote the script as well as the stories, wrote the part of the little girl with Barrymore in mind. He also inserted a few references to his other works, the most amusing one being when Woods' character is watching 'The Dead Zone', and asks, 'Who writes this crap?' The cat is also chased by a Saint Bernard, 'Cujo', and almost run over by a red Plymouth Fury, 'Christine'.
9. (1976) Brian DePalma directed this first book of King's to make it to film. It's about a confused teen, with telekinetic abilities, struggling to get through in life despite the efforts of her psychotic mother. When she becomes publically humiliated at her high school prom, it's too much for her to take and she snaps.

Answer: Carrie

Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, William Katt and John Travolta starred. Spacek only got the part after her husband, Jack Fisk, convinced DePalma to let her audition. The high school, Bates High, was named after Norman Bates from Hitchcock's 'Psycho'. Amy Irving's mother in the film is played by her real life mother, Priscilla Pointer.
10. (2001) Bobby's father is dead, and his mother is too wrapped up in her own life and disappointments to give Bobby the time and attention he needs. So when Ted Brautigan moves in upstairs, life gets a whole lot better for Bobby, until the 'lowmen' come to take Ted back.

Answer: Hearts in Atlantis

This Scott Hicks film focuses in on only one small part of the King novel, which feels like a bit of a cheat. Anthony Hopkins delivers his usual wonderful performance as Brautigan. The movie is full of anachronisms, such as a school bus with a retractable sign, a feature that wasn't invented until over 20 years after the movie was set.
11. (1983) Donna Trenton thought things were bad enough when she learned that her husband found out that she was having an affair. But she soon finds that they can get a lot worse when she and her son are trapped in a sweltering, broken-down car by a rabid dog, and no one knows that they're there.

Answer: Cujo

Lewis Teague directed this movie that starred Dee Wallace-Stone and Danny Pintauro. Five different Saint Bernard dogs were used in the filming, as well as a mechanical head, and a guy in a dog costume. Cujo is a Native American word that means 'unstoppable force'.
12. (1986) A teenager is missing and feared dead. In a trip that becomes one of self-discovery, four friends go looking for the body. To make matters more interesting, a group of the town's bad boys are looking for the same thing, and it becomes a race to see who can get there first.

Answer: Stand By Me

Rob Reiner directed this wonderful adaptation starring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Kiefer Sutherland and Richard Dreyfuss. Reiner also directed King's 'Misery', another wonderful adaptation.
13. (1983) Imagine waking up from a coma and finding out that you've lost five years of your life. Now imagine that somehow you've managed to acquire psychic abilities. All you have to do is touch someone to know things that are going to happen to them. Now further imagine that you've met someone who you know is going to start WWIII, and maybe even destroy the world. What would you do?

Answer: The Dead Zone

David Cronenburg directed Christopher Walken, Brooke Adams, Tom Skerritt and Martin Sheen in this excellent movie. During the filming of the burning bedroom scene, Walken's face was sprayed with a fire retardent chemical that looked like sweat on film. This scene also had to be reshot because an E.T. doll could be seen and Universal Studios threatened to sue if it wasn't removed.
14. (1993) Leland Gaunt is the Devil, really, he is. He opens a store that manages to have exactly what everyone needs, or desperately wants. Of course payment for that priceless article is corruption, and before long everyone is doing something nasty to everyone else.

Answer: Needful Things

Fraser Clarke Heston directed, and Max von Sydow, Ed Harris, Bonnie Bedelia, Amanda Plummer and J.T. Walsh starred.
15. (1994) Andy Dufresne is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover, crimes that he didn't commit. Still he settles down to do his time, becoming a model prisoner and making himself useful to the warden and the guards. He's so successful at not causing any problems, that no one suspects he's slowly digging out an escape route, hidden by a poster hung on his wall.

Answer: The Shawshank Redemption

Frank Darabont directed this movie that was nominated for 7 Academy Awards. Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton and James Whitmore starred. The A.S.P.C.A. carefully monitored any scenes that the crow was in, and insisted that a dead maggot be found to feed to it rather than a live one.
