4. If you're ever in the mood for a movie that is as thought-provoking as it is disturbing, or as disturbing as a movie made in 1956 can be, you might try this one that stars Patty McCormack as Rhoda Penmark, the pig-tailed little darling who kills anyone standing in the way of what she wants. What is the title of this film? Hint

5. For those John Wayne fans out there, should you be in the mood for one of his Westerns, I have a great one in mind. Made in 1956, the film features the Duke as an aging Civil War veteran who spends years searching for his kidnapped niece. Of course trouble escorts him every step of the way. Name this classic Western. Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. If I find myself in the mood for a scary flick, maybe even a very scary flick, a 1973 film starring Linda Blair as a young girl possessed by a demon is a possible choice. The film frightened a lot of movie-goers when it first hit the theaters. After all, the theme of demon possession is a very frightening one. I am referring to which movie? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. There is a certain segment of movie-goers who enjoy watching foreign films. I am not one of them. But should you ever find yourself yearning to escape, at least for a few hours, to France or Italy or any country other than the one in which you live, there are quite a few well-made foreign films just waiting to be watched. The one I'm thinking about is a love story which stars French actress Catherine Deneuve and was filmed way back in 1964. The French title is "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg." By what name is it known in English? Hint

Question 8 of 10

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Have you been watching your neighbors more closely lately? Do you feel as though you're being watched? Sounds as though paranoia has crept in. May I suggest a 1974 paranoid thriller that stars Warren Beatty? The plot centers around a senator who has been assassinated at the Space Needle restaurant and all the witnesses mysteriously die. Beatty plays a newspaper reporter assigned to investigate the deaths and the mysterious activities of a corrupt corporation. Name this film.

Answer: The Parallax View

Considering the political climate of the U.S. in 1974, thanks to the Watergate scandal, this political thriller still packs a punch. It is one of my favorite movies. If you haven't seen it, and I suggest you do, you'll be blindsided by the ending. I have never been a Warren Beatty fan but I have to give kudos to the actor for his competent performance.

The film was based on a novel by Loren Singer and was reportedly inspired by Kennedy's assassination.
2. A classic romance you say? Why not try this bittersweet romance about a couple who meet and fall in love on a ship. Both are in other relationships but they are so attracted to each other that they plan to meet atop the Empire State Building in six months time. Of course fate intervenes. What is the name of this wonderfully romantic gem?

Answer: An Affair to Remember

The Cary Grant/Deborah Kerr version was actually a remake of a 1939 film that starred Charles Boyer and Irene Dunn. In my opinion, the remake was far superior to the original. Who can forget the memorable scene where Nickie (Grant) waits until dark for Terry (Kerr) at the designated spot atop the Empire State Building? Unbeknownst to him, she is hit by a car en route to their rendezvous.

He thinks he's been stood up. All's well that ends well in this sentimental favorite.
3. Sometimes a musical is the perfect antidote to feeling down in the dumps. Over the years many big-production musicals have made it to the big screen. There is one musical in particular that stands out. Starring Debbie Reynolds, Donald O'Connor and the irrepressible Gene Kelly singing and dancing with an umbrella, name this delightful musical.

Answer: Singin' in the Rain

Produced in 1952, "Singin' in the Rain" was written by long-time collaborators Adolph Green and Betty Comden. The elegant Cyd Charisse appears in the film and dances with a scarf alongside Gene Kelly. Although Miss Charisse had made movies prior to "Singin' in the Rain," it was this film that made her a star. Of course, who can forget the voice of Jean Hagen as Lina Lamont? If this musical doesn't dig you out of the dumps, I don't know what will.

Answer: The Bad Seed

Patty MCormack plays the role of Rhoda to perfection. She and Nancy Kelly, the actress who plays her mother in the film, had performed their respective roles on Broadway. The play was such a hit that both actresses were asked to recreate their roles for the big screen. Patty was so convincing as the evil Rhoda that she was nominated for both an Oscar and Golden Globe in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Answer: The Searchers

Jeffrey Hunter also stars as John Wayne's adopted nephew who travels with him to provide comic relief. Natalie Wood plays the kidnapped niece. Unfortunately, her screen time is short. She appears toward the end of the movie when her uncle (Wayne) finds her living with a Native American tribe and brings her back home.

Interestingly, Lana Wood, Natalie's younger sister, plays Natalie's character at a younger age. She's seen at the beginning of the movie before the homestead-burning scene.

Answer: The Exorcist

If vomiting pea soup and a head turning 360 degrees isn't scary enough, then 12-year-old Regan MacNeil (Blair) speaking vile words in the voice of a demon might do the trick. Even after all these years, this movie still sends chills up my spine. It's fair warning if you haven't seen it yet.

Answer: The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

What makes this film unique is the fact that every word is sung. "Umbrellas" is actually the middle film of a romantic trilogy directed by Jacques Demy. The first movie was "Lola" and the third was "The Young Girls of Rochefort." Several of the same actors and characters appear in all three films.
8. Do you enjoy watching documentaries? I know I do. If you're ever in the mood to watch one, I would suggest Morgan Spurlock's scathing exposé of the McDonald's fast food chain. What title did Spurlock give this 2004 documentary?

Answer: Super Size Me

Spurlock spent a month eating nothing but McDonald's fast food and lived to tell about it. To some degree, this documentary changed how fast food establishments not only prepare their food but what they offer as alternatives to those burgers and fries packed with trans-fat and sodium.
9. Holiday movies, especially Christmas movies, seem to be a favorite genre for many. There are folks who can watch Christmas movies any time of year. One Christmas movie in particular, made in 1983, is an annual favorite of kids and adults alike. It stars Peter Billingsley as nine-year-old Ralphie Parker who really, really, really wants a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. Loosely based on the memoirs of author Jean Shepherd, what's the name of this holiday favorite?

Answer: A Christmas Story

Who can forget the leg lamp or Ralphie's pink bunny pajamas? The movie is full of nostalgic moments with dark humor added in. Darren McGavin plays Ralphie's dad (the old man) and Melinda Dillon plays the mom. Jean Shepherd himself narrates the story as the adult Ralphie.
10. For those in the mood for science fiction mixed with adventure, how about watching the 1977 blockbuster that spawned a series of sequels and prequels? The film was directed by George Lucas and starred a much younger Harrison Ford as Han Solo. I'll bet you'll have no trouble naming this movie.

Answer: Star Wars

"Star Wars" was huge when it first hit the big screen in May 1977. Not only did the franchise create a series of prequels and sequels, it has produced comics, books, video games and DVDs. Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill starred alongside Harrison Ford with James Earl Jones providing the distinctive voice of their nemesis, Darth Vader.
