Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this movie, Audie Murphy starred as a youth who got his first taste of battle in the American Civil War. What was it called?

Answer: The Red Badge of Courage

In this movie, based on the story by Stephen Crane, the sign of courage being referred to is a wound which had drawn blood. "Red Mountain" is also a Civil War film, but it is largely about Quantrell's raiders.
2. Based on a novel by Anthony Burgess, this movie directed by Stanley Kubrick is about violence in a future Britain and the brainwashing of one young man. What is it called?

Answer: A Clockwork Orange

Though it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, this movie was in fact banned in Great Britain for many years. Some critics referred to it as "pornographic" and "repulsive" because of its depiction of acts of violence and rape.
3. Which of the descriptions best fits the plot of "The Yellow Rolls Royce"?

Answer: Three different stories about the owners of an expensive car.

Terence Rattigan wrote the screenplay and Anthony Asquith directed. Rex Harrison, Jeanne Moreau, Shirley Maclaine and George C. Scott were amongst the stars. The three owners were an aristocrat, a gangster and a millionairess.
4. Alastair Sim starred as a police detective in a movie about a mysterious murderer who carries out his crimes in a wartime emergency hospital. What was the movie called?

Answer: Green for Danger

This is one of the few British movies that manages to mix moments of quirky comedy with moments of genuine fright. The cast included Sally Gray, Rosamund John, Trevor Howard, Leo Genn and Megs Jenkins but Alastair Sim manages to outshine even their excellent performances. Christianna Brand's novel is given full value in this version.
5. It had a Raymond Chandler script and starred Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake. What was the name of the 1946 movie about a returning war veteran and his murdered wife?

Answer: The Blue Dahlia

Amongst the most memorable performances is that of William Bendix, who starts to lose control every time he hears what he says is "Monkey Music". Alan Ladd plays the man who becomes suspected of the murder and later, whilst on the run, gets a lift in the car of the character played by Veronica Lake.
6. "The Black Shield of Falworth" is set in a fictional medieval England. Who is the leading male actor in this movie?

Answer: Tony Curtis

Although there is a splendid clash of accents between the American and English actors this can be seen as a movie with plenty of exciting action. Particularly memorable are the scenes where the squires are trained in the use of arms.
7. Who were the stars of "Heller in Pink Tights", which was about a dramatic company touring the West in the 1880s?

Answer: Sophia Loren and Anthony Quinn

It is surprising to find that the novel on which it is based was written by Louis L'Amour. Other featured actors in the film included Steve Forrest, Eileen Heckart, Margaret O'Brien and Ramon Navarro.
8. James Cagney plays a violent gangster obsessed with his mother in this movie, which ends with the line "Top of the World, Ma!" What is it called?

Answer: White Heat

In spite of his tremendous performance Cagney received no awards for this movie. However, the writer Virginia Kellogg did receive an Academy Award nomination for her story.
9. Here are four movies with purple in the title, but which one starred Gregory Peck?

Answer: The Purple Plain

Peck plays a Canadian squadron leader who gradually recovers his nerves during a terrific trek across country in Burma. Dana Andrews and Richard Conte starred in "The Purple Heart" and Tony Curtis was the lead in "The Purple Mask" whilst "The Purple Rose of Cairo" was a Woody Allen movie.
10. "Gray Lady Down" stars Charlton Heston, but which description best fits this movie?

Answer: An American submarine is trapped after a collision.

The gadgets and the technology may have changed, but the story is still basically the same as the British movie "Morning Departure". This U.S.A. version also starred David Carradine, Stacy Keach and Ned Beatty.
