Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The great character actor Walter Brennan won three Oscars in the Supporting category. He received one other nomination in the Supporting category. For which movie was he nominated?

Answer: Sergeant York

He won for "Come and Get It" (1936), "Kentucky" (1938), and "The Westerner" (1940), and garnered a further nomination for his portrayal of the Pastor in "Sergeant York" (1941). He was deserving of a nod for his work on "To Have and Have Not" (1945), and as the villainous head of the Clantons in John Ford's "My Darling Clementine" (1946), not to mention scene stealing efforts in "Blood on The Moon" and "Red River" in 1948 and as the scene stealing Stumpy in "Rio Bravo" (1959).

"Sergeant York" was the story of the real life WW1 sharpshooter hero, who was marvellously portrayed by Gary Cooper. Of the eight movies mentioned in these comments, five were directed by Howard Hawks with whom Walter had formed a close friendship, such that when asked to play the role in "Rio Bravo", Brennan merely asked, "Teeth in or out?"
2. Glenn Ford received a nomination as Best Actor for which one of the following?

Answer: None of these

Sadly this fine actor was never nominated during his career in Hollywood, a distinction he shares with Edward G Robinson, Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea, among others.
3. For her performance in which movie did Meryl Streep win her first Best Actress Oscar?

Answer: Sophie's Choice

Yes, Streep won for "Sophie's Choice" (1982), as the tragic holocaust surviving mother, haunted by the fact the Germans had forced her to decide which of her two children would die in the gas chamber. She was nominated in the Supporting category for "The Deer Hunter" (1979)and nominated in the Supporting category again for "Kramer vs. Kramer"(1980), for which she won.

In 2012, she received her third award playing Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady".
4. Jason Robards Jr won two Oscars, for "All The President's Men" (1976) and for which other film?

Answer: Julia

Robards won for "Julia" (1977), where he played author Dashiel Hammett, becoming the first actor to win in the Supporting category in successive years, having won the previous year for "All The President's Men".

"Julia" was based on a true story by Lillian Hellman (played by Jane Fonda). The story concerns the movement of money out of Nazi Germany in the late 1930s. The title role of Julia was played by Vanessa Redgrave, who won in the Best Supporting category. This wonderful movie was honoured with 11 nominations.
5. Which of these women won for Best Performance in a Leading Role in consecutive years?

Answer: Luise Rainer

Luise Rainer won for "The Great Ziegfeld" (1936) as Anna Held and for "The Good Earth" (1937) playing O-Lan. Luise made only 14 feature films, of these only nine in Hollywood. Vivien Leigh, who appeared in less than 20 feature films, was nominated and won for "Gone With the Wind" (1939) as Scarlett O'Hara and "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1951) as Blanche DuBois. Hilary Swank won for "Boys Don't Cry" (1999) playing a boy Brandon Teena and "Million Dollar Baby" (2004) as Maggie Fitzgerald. Sally Field won for "Norma Rae" (1979) playing the title role and for "Places in the Heart" (1984) as Edna Spalding.
6. In the twentieth century, two female actors won a Best Performance Oscar and also an Oscar in another non acting category. Who are these women?

Answer: Barbra Streisand and Emma Thompson

Barbra won Best Actress for "Funny Girl" (1968) and she shared the Best Song award with Paul Williams for the song "Evergreen" from "A Star Is Born" (1976). Emma Thompson won her acting award for "Howards End" (1993) and Best Screenplay Adaptation for her treatment of Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility" (1996).
7. Multi-nominated Paul Newman won an Oscar for which performance?

Answer: The Color of Money

Newman won for "The Color of Money", in which he reprised his role of Fast Eddie Felson from "The Hustler" (1961). Newman was nominated nine times for his acting and once as producer for "Rachel Rachel" (1969). He also received two honorary awards. "The Color of Money" featured Newman with a young Tom Cruise playing a brash pool hustler, much like Fast Eddie had been in his youth. Eddie mentors the young man until the pupil believes he is better than the teacher.
8. Alec Guinness won an acting Oscar for "Bridge on The River Kwai". He also received a nomination for writing. For which movie was he nominated?

Answer: The Horse's Mouth

He gave magnificent performances in all these films. "The Horse's Mouth" (1958) garnered him a nomination for his adaptation of Joyce Cary's novel. Alec Guinness plays the lead character, Gulley Jimson, who is a talented but somewhat unscrupulous. He is on the lookout for the perfect wall on which to paint a mural. This movie is hilarious.
9. Which multiple nominee and double Oscar winner played the following roles: Dr. Wilbur Larch, Milo Tindle, Dr. Frank Bryant, and Thomas Fowler?

Answer: Michael Caine

Anthony Quinn, Melvyn Douglas and Peter Ustinov all received multiple nominations and two awards each. However, Michael Caine is our man. He won playing Eliott in "Hannah and Her Sisters" and played Dr. Wilbur Larch in "The Cider House Rules". He received nominations playing Dr. Frank Bryant in "Educating Rita", Milo Tindle in "Sleuth", Thomas Fowler in "The Quiet American" and of course for his star making performance as "Alfie" in the 1966 film of the same name.
10. Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson and James Coburn all starred in "The Magnificent Seven". With regard to Oscar, who is the odd man out?

Answer: Charles Bronson

Charles Bronson has never been nominated. Steve McQueen was nominated for "The Sand Pebbles". Yul Brynner won for "The King and I" and James Coburn won for "Affliction". Robert Vaughn, another of the seven, famous later as Napoleon Solo in "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.", was also nominated for an Oscar for his performance in "The Young Philadelphians".

Charles Bronson started his acting career in the early fifties and was billed as Charles Buchinsky. He was featured in three of the big ensemble blockbusters of the sixties, "The Magnificent Seven", "The Great Escape" and "The Dirty Dozen". He also played alongside Elvis Presley in "Kid Galahad", and appeared in "The Sandpiper", "The Battle of The Bulge" and "Once Upon A Time in The West", all in the sixties. By the seventies he was a major star, and starred in "The Mechanic", "Telefon", "Mr Majestyk" and the first of the "Death Wish" franchise. Charles continued acting in features and made for TV movies until his retirement at age 78 in 1999.
