Oscars - General Trivia Questions

1. At the first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929, Joseph Farnham became the first and only winner of what category, which was eliminated the following year?

From Quiz
Do You Know the Academy Awards?

Answer: Best Title Writing

Farnham is listed as winning for writing the title cards for the films "Fair Co-Ed", "Laugh, Clown, Laugh", and "Telling the World". With sound pictures becoming more and more prevalent, the Title Writing category only lasted one year. Sadly, Farnham died shortly after, on June 2, 1931. By doing so, Farnham also became the first Academy Award winner to die.

2. Richard Rodgers, despite many of his productions going on to major awards success on film, only ever received a single Oscar nomination. For which film was he nominated, winning his only Oscar?

From Quiz EGOT Winners - The Oscars

Answer: State Fair

"State Fair" was a musical adaptation of a 1933 film of the same name. Starring Jeanne Crane and Dana Andrews, it was the only musical by Rodgers and his writing partner Oscar Hammerstein II that was produced directly for film, rather than being an adaptation of a stage show. Included in the score of the film was the song "It Might As Well Be Spring", performed by Jeanne Crane (dubbed by Louanne Hogan). A recording by Dick Haymes, who also appeared in the film, entered the Billboard magazine Best Seller chart in November 1945, reaching number 5. "It Might As Well Be Spring" won the Oscar for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards ceremony in March 1946.

3. Which crooner won a Best Actor Oscar for 1944's "Going My Way" and introduced his signature song "White Christmas" in the movie "Holiday Inn", in which he starred with Fred Astaire?

From Quiz Oscar-Winning Singer-Actors

Answer: Bing Crosby

Crosby is the prototypical singer-actor, considered a superstar in both roles. In addition to delivering an Oscar-winning performance in "Going My Way", Crosby also introduced "Swinging on a Star" in the film, which won an Oscar for Best Original Song and spent nine weeks as a number one hit for him. As an actor, Crosby starred in both dramas and comedies (especially with Bob Hope); as a singer, he was praised by fans from Thelonious Monk to David Bowie. And he also started and sponsored a legendary golf tournament, now known as the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

4. A sitcom star in the 1960s, this woman won a best actress Oscar in the previous decade for her first film. She played a lonely woman with an alcoholic husband in this adaptation of a play by William Inge. Who was the actress and what was the film?

From Quiz Nothing to it! Oscar wins on the first try

Answer: Shirley Booth, "Come Back, Little Sheba"

Best known for the titular role in the 1960's sitcom,"Hazel", Shirley Booth was in her fifties by the time she started her film career. She had worked professionally as a stage actress since the age of 12 and ended up making only a handful of films. Booth won one of her three Tony Awards for playing Lola in "Come Back, Little Sheba", William Inge's heartbreaking drama about an aging couple haunted by their disappointments. In the film version, Burt Lancaster plays her alcoholic husband Doc, who gave up his hopes of a medical career when Lola became pregnant. The "Little Sheba" of the title refers to their dog who has run away.

5. The first ever UK Oscar winner was Frank Lloyd, a Scottish born director who won at the second Oscar Ceremony. What was the name of the movie he won for?

From Quiz UK Oscar Winners

Answer: The Divine Lady

"The Divine Lady" was a silent movie that told the story of love affair between Lord Horatio Nelson and Lady Emma Hamilton. Frank Lloyd was born in Glasgow on 2 February 1886. He received further nominations, most famously for the Charles Laughton version of "Mutiny on the Bounty". He won the award again in 1934 for Noel Coward's "Cavalcade" and became President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1934.

6. Who won the Oscar for Best Actor for playing Hannibal Lecter?

From Quiz The Oscars Mix

Answer: Anthony Hopkins

Anthony Hopkins won the award as Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs". He is also known for his roles in "The Elephant Man", "Meet Joe Black", and "The Mask of Zorro".

7. Who received the first ever Oscar for playing the roles of August Schilling in the 1927 film "The Way of All Flesh" and the Grand Duke Sergius Alexander in 1928's "The Last Command"?

From Quiz Remembering Oscar

Answer: Emil Jannings

Emil Jannings was a Swiss-born actor whose birth name was Theodor Friedrich Emil Janenz. Of his 80 acting credits, only five of them were in American-made films, and only one of those, "The Last Command", is still intact today. 1929 marked the first presentation of the Academy Awards, a private function wherein the awards presentations were completed in about 15 minutes after dinner. Jannings wasn't even there to receive his award. You see, there were no surprises as to who was going to win -- the winners had all been announced in the press three months prior to the actual ceremony. Jannings had returned home to Germany before the event, and had received his Oscar (which wasn't called an Oscar yet) before he left. That first year, multiple roles were considered in the nominations for acting, so Jannings won the award for his acting in both films cited in the question. "The Way of All Flesh" saw him play the role of a bank clerk whose life goes horribly wrong while transporting $1000 in securities from Milwaukee to Chicago. In "The Last Command" he was the former commander of the Czar's armies in Russia, fallen on hard times in the wake of the Communist Revolution. Both movies were silent films.

8. The great character actor Walter Brennan won three Oscars in the Supporting category. He received one other nomination in the Supporting category. For which movie was he nominated?

From Quiz Multiple and No Nominations

Answer: Sergeant York

He won for "Come and Get It" (1936), "Kentucky" (1938), and "The Westerner" (1940), and garnered a further nomination for his portrayal of the Pastor in "Sergeant York" (1941).
