Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Bob Fosse musical was inspired by Fellini's "Notti di Cabiria" ?

Answer: Sweet Charity

The girl who wanted to be loved, Sweet Charity, was inspired by Fellini's Oscar winning film but certain changes were brought to the story. Bob Fosse's movie told the story of an unlucky in love taxi dancer who still had faith that one day she'd find her perfect match.

In the original Fellini picture, the lead character was a prostitute but the racy story line was dropped, probably lost in translation.
2. What was the name of the family Maria had to take care of in "The Sound of Music"?

Answer: von Trapp

Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta and Gretl von Trapp were Captain Georg von Trapp's kids. The year 1965's "Best Picture" winner told the story of Maria (Julie Andrews) bringing music into the well ordered life of the von Trapps when she was hired as a governess.

She ended up falling in love with the charming widower. All of this happened in Austria, during the rise of the Nazis.
3. Who interpreted Amos Hart in 2002's "Chicago"?

Answer: John C. Reilly

John C. Reilly gave my favorite performance in "Chicago" as the neglected husband of killer Roxie Hart(Zellweger). He had one musical number singing "Cellophane Man". Reilly was nominated for many awards for his portrayal along with a few of his cast mates.
4. "Moulin Rouge!", Luhrmann's Academy Award nominated picture, took place in Paris' 18th arrondissment, Montmartre.

Answer: True

The movie took place in Montmartre although most of the film was shot in a studio and the City of Lights' landscape was mostly computer generated. The movie brilliantly mixed popular music and visual effects with an 1890's setting and plot. The soundtrack featured Elton John, Madonna and U2 hits.
5. Who wrote and directed "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg"?

Answer: Jacques Demy

Demy's movie was about a teenager falling in love but war came between them. All the dialogues were sung. The 1964 movie starring the great Catherine Deneuve was the first musical in color from France.
6. 1961's "West Side Story" was a retelling of Shakespeare's ageless "Romeo and Juliet". What were the names of the two doomed lovers?

Answer: Tony and Maria

Natalie Wood who played Maria did none of her singing. Neither did Richard Beymer who played Tony. A lot of the "unseen voices" thought they deserved a share of the profits from the album sales.
7. "Fiddler on the Roof" was about a Muslim family in Russia.

Answer: False

The movie, directed by Norman Jewison, was about a Jewish family before the revolution in Russia. The film featured the song "If I Were a Rich Man" that was sampled by Gwen Stefani in her album "Love, Angel, Music, Baby" giving the song "Rich Girl".
8. Which of these Disney movies featured music by Elton John?

Answer: The Lion King

John wrote "Hakuna Matata", "Circle of Life", "Be Prepared", "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight". This last song won the Academy Award for best song. His soundtrack accompanied one of the most beloved Disney movie about a lion prince ultimately reclaiming his kingdom after being tricked into believing he killed the late king.
9. Which one of these movies was NOT a musical featuring Barbra Streisand?

Answer: Star 80

Streisand's first film, "Funny Girl" in which she portrayed Fanny Brice, a real life comedienne, earned her an Academy Award nomination. Streisand had already played the role on stage. Also starring Omar Sharif in a role first offered to Sinatra, "Funny Girl" ended up the highest grossing film of its year. "Hello, Dolly!" came right after. "Funny Lady" was the sequel to "Funny Girl".
10. "Oliver!" was based on which author's novel?

Answer: Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens inspired a lot of filmmakers with his books. His novels "Nicholas Nickleby", "Great Expectations" and " A Christmas Carol" were all adapted many times over. The Carol Reed movie "Oliver!" was inspired by Dickens' famous "Oliver Twist" about a orphan who fell into the wrong hands and was trained to be a pickpocket.
