Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1cyprus chooses an old Ealing comedy, 'Kind Hearts and Coronets'. Who plays the suave murderer Louis Mazzini?

Answer: Dennis Price

This is a well known old classic. Alec Guinness famously played the eight victims of the Noble D'Ascoynes family, both male and female, but it was Dennis Price who played the murderous Mazzini. Price's first film was in 1944 and called 'A Canterbury Tale'. In it he played a sensitive young man who realises an ambition to play the organ in the Cathedral. Further roles followed, but he wasn't really suited to costume drama. His role as Mazzini is the one he is probably best remembered for.
Robert Hamer was the director and Ernest Irving provided the music for this hilarious black comedy.
2. Bracklaman's choice of film reflects the fact that he is Welsh. He wants to see an Oscar winning film about a famous Welshman, that was filmed partly in Wales. Which of the choices best fits the bill?

Answer: Lawrence of Arabia

The film 'Lawrence of Arabia' (1962) is about the life of T.E. Lawrence who was born in Tremadog in North Wales. The film chronicles Lawrence's experiences in Arabia during World War I, especially his attacks on Aqaba and Damascus and his dealings with the Arab National Council. It was partly filmed at Merthyr Mawr which is the largest sand dune system in Europe and close to Bracklaman's home.
'Only Two Can Play' was also partly filmed in Wales and has the distinction of being the first X rated film to be made there.
'How Green Was My Valley' was the winner of 5 Oscars, but wasn't shot in Wales and 'Moby Dick', starring Gregory Peck, used Fishguard harbour as a location, but is a work of fiction.
3. Mink's choice of film for our evening out contains a character that pops up all the way through the film, but isn't one of the main characters. He's a squirrel who is desperately trying to bury an acorn to eat after the snow has gone. You may have guessed that the film is 'Ice Age', but what is the name of the squirrel?

Answer: Scrat

'Ice Age' was released in 2002 and is an animated feature. The main characters are all prehistoric animals that can talk to and understand each other. The main plot is their attempt to move south to avoid the advancing ice. Scrat is a sabre toothed squirrel that is totally obsessed with finding and hiding acorns.

In his constant searches for either food or a place to hide it, fate always gets in his way, to prevent him in one way or another.
4. Elskede has plumped for a 1981 film 'The Four Seasons'. This film is about a group of friends who rent a sailboat for a summer vacation. What is their destination?

Answer: St Croix

The film stars Alan Alda and Carol Burnett as Jack and Kate Burroughs. It is the story of 3 couples, all long time friends, who meet each year and holiday together. In the film they rent the boat and holiday with nothing but disastrous results.
After they weigh anchor and end up on a sandbar, Danny (Jack Weston) says to Jack (Alan Alda) "We are three hundred and sixty dollars overbudget...each. I don't see how we can reach St Croix unless we have a meeting first." To which Jack replies "I don't see how we can make a trip to St Croix unless it floats by."
5. Supersal1 admits that she doesn't get out much, but she would like to see a film she has seen before, 'Casino Royale'. In the 2006 version the part of Vesper Lind was played by Eva Green. Who played the same part in the spoof version of 'Casino Royale' released in 1967?

Answer: Ursula Andress

Honor Blackman played Pussy Galore in 'Goldfinger'. Jill St.John played the part of Tiffany Case in 'Diamonds Are Forever' and Diana Rigg played Teresa di Vicenzo (aka Mrs James Bond) in 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'. Ursula Andress also played Honey Rider in 'Dr. No'. Her success in this role set her up for a succession of parts including the 1965 film 'What's New Pussycat' written by Woody Allen and starring Peter Sellers. When she played Honey Rider in 'Dr No', her voice was dubbed because of her strong accent.
Other actresses considered for the part in the 2006 version were Sienna Miller, Jessica Simpson, Scarlett Johansson and Angelina Jolie.
Supersal refused to say which version was the last film she saw.
6. Joliette member j2cp2's suggestion was a film released in 1998. It stars Jeff Bridges and John Goodman and contains the lines "Am I wrong, or are you out of your element?" "No, but that rug brought the whole room together before those guys micturated on it." Which film is he suggesting we see?

Answer: The Big Lebowski

'The Big Lebowski' is a Coen brothers comedy about a case of mistaken identity. Jeffery 'The Dude' Lebowski, played by Jeff Bridges, is an out of work slacker who is mistaken for a wheelchair bound millionaire of the same name whose wife, supposedly, owes a debt to one of the other characters.

The film follows his life for the next few days. The lines in the question were part of a conversation between 'The Dude' and his friends after he had been roughed up, and one of the thugs had urinated on the rug.
7. RMG's choice of film is another British black comedy, but at least this one is in colour. It is set in a northern town and centers around a group of workers facing redundancy. One small ray of hope they have is for them to pull off a spectacular feat. One of the characters who helps them to achieve their goal is also the one that could end up making the final decision about their futures. Which film is RMG suggesting?

Answer: Brassed Off

'Brassed Off' is about a colliery brass band and their struggle to save both the band and their jobs. There are two very powerful performances from actors Pete Postlethwaite and Stephen Tompkinson. The person who has the job of deciding on the future of the colliery, and also helps them to achieve their goal of winning a national brass band competition, is played by Tara Fitzgerald.

She is sent by the mine owners to decide if the pit is still financially viable. She also happens to be the granddaughter of one of the band's former members and has inherited both his talent and his instrument. Two other actresses had been considered for the part played by Tara Fitzgerald.

They were Kate Winslet and Catherine Zeta Jones.
8. Baldricksmum decides to go for another black and white classic. It is a film that uses a theatrical technique called a MacGuffin, which is a plot device that motivates one of the characters, but is of little importance to the plot. The film starts with a young woman driving from Phoenix, Arizona, to California with $40,000 of stolen money. She is brutally murdered part way through the journey. Produced on a low budget, this film has stood the test of time and may now be considered a classic. Which film is Baldricksmum urging us to watch?

Answer: Psycho

'Psycho' was the first horror/thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, and was based on a book by Robert Bloch. The book was loosely based on the murderous crimes of Ed Gein.
Although the 'MacGuffin' had been used in theatrical circles for some years before Hitchcock revealed it as the device which motivates a character, it has subsequently been closely associated with him.
Janet Leigh played the luckless Marion Crane, who was already regretting the theft when she happened across the Bates Motel. The 'shower scene' has passed into movie history.
9. The film that bottle_rocket recommends is 'Hannah and Her Sisters'. It's among the many great Woody Allen contemplations on love, life and New York City. Which of these actresses does NOT play one of the title characters?

Answer: Sigourney Weaver

'Hannah and Her Sisters' opened in the U.S.A. on February 7th, 1986 to rave reviews. Many critics considered it his most mature work and the public seemed to agree as it became one of his most successful films. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards and landed Woody Allen his second Best Original Screenplay Oscar.

The film also took home an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Michael Caine who plays Hannah's adulterous husband and Best Supporting Actress for Dianne Weist's portrayal of Hannah's neurotic sibling.

It's a bittersweet, touching and at times very funny look at the intricate lives of this family of New Yorkers. For a film that is over twenty years old, it still holds up very well today. Mia Farrow played the part of Hannah, and Barbara Hershey played the other sister, Lee.
10. MaggieG dismissed all the other suggestions out of hand. "None of them can hold a candle to my all-time favourite film," she announced. From the moment those immortal words 'O Muse,/ Sing in me, and through me tell the story/ Of that man skilled in all the ways of contending/ A wanderer, harried for years on end...' appear on the screen you are guaranteed to enjoy every minute. A superb film based on a classic tale. Excellent music too!" she argued. What film is MaggieG recommending?

Answer: Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?

This superb Coen Brothers film of 2000 is a reworking of the 'Odyssey' by Homer, from which work the lines spoken of in the question are translated. George Clooney, looking most unlike his usual film persona (and who agreed to do the film without even reading the script) plays Ulysses Everett McGill, a member of a chain gang who escapes with two fellow prisoners and goes on an epic adventure in search of hidden treasure.

As well as the vivid characters and memorable dialogue (who can forget Clooney's plaintive, "I'm a 'Dapper Dan' man!" or "Those boys desecrated a burning cross!") the film contains wonderful music. From the sexy sirens in the scene by the river to the Soggy Bottom Boys' "Man of Constant Sorrow", the soundtrack is a joy from start to finish.

It is a truly memorable and enjoyable film! The plot revolves around three convicts who escape from a chain gang and their journey to retrieve $1.2 million McGill claims to have stolen and buried before his arrest.
