quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A gifted student befriends an aging recluse literary genius in the heart of an NYC borough... or, could it be the other way around? Matt Damon plays a lawyer towards the end. Choose the correct title.

Answer: Finding Forrester

"Finding Forrester" is one of Sean Connery's best performances. Connery plays an extremely private author who reminds many critics of J.D. Salinger to some degree.
Over several months, the two leads develop a trusting rapport as they become mentor and protegee. Damon represents Connery's law firm. The movie is beautifully written and film-crafted. I highly recommend it to anyone.
2. The male protagonist recaps 30 years of life as an avid runner, serving in the Vietnam War, connected to three US Presidents, a proficient table tennis player, and self-made millionaire. A floating feather triggers his walk down memory lane. Do you recall the title of the movie?

Answer: Forrest Gump

Tom Hanks' performance as Forrest Gump is magical on screen through his accent, body language, and credulous sincerity delivered through his eyes. The viewer always knows what Forrest is or isn't thinking.
Hanks created Forrest's Southern drawl by interviewing the actor who played the younger Forrest Gump, Michael Conner Humphreys, who was from Independence, Mississippi. Tom shares this story on "The Graham Norton Show" and a clip can be found on YouTube. Worth the watch to see a craftsman work his craft.
Hanks won the Best Actor Oscar.
3. Due to British governed primogeniture, a mother and her three daughters find themselves being uprooted from their family estate to living in a small cottage at the mercy of the mother's wealthy cousin. One of the daughters almost dies from a high fever and a broken heart. Name this British film.

Answer: Sense and Sensibility

It took Emma Thompson five years to complete the adapted screenplay. She took a lot of her vision directly from Jane Austen's letters and not the actual novel because Austen's natural humor was "sensed" throughout the letters. Emma slept with them by her bedside to remind her how good-natured Jane had been so that Emma's writing might reflect Jane's true style and personality. An exceptional film.
4. A Monet painting is stolen. An NYPD detective and the insurer's investigator are both determined to crack the case. Numerous black bowler hats are choreographed in the final cat and mouse game. Do you recall this film's title?

Answer: The Thomas Crown Affair

Rene Russo, Pierce Brosnan, and Denis Leary play investigator, suspect, and detective respectively. Brosnan impressed me with his character's vulnerability at exactly the right timing. Russo always gives a solid performance and doesn't disappoint in this film, as well.
Faye Dunaway played the investigator in the 1968 film version of the same name and was brought back for the 1999 remake playing the shrink who gently pushes Thomas Crown into new revelations about himself.
5. A lonely rail token collector pretends to be an amnesiac's fiancee and even makes it to the altar, but backs out during the vows because she's fallen for the amnesiac's brother. A passport stamped Florence, Italy is mentioned numerous times throughout the film. Do you remember the movie?

Answer: While You Were Sleeping

This is possibly my all-time favorite romance-comedy and Sandra Bullock's breakout performance. The casting director was spot on bringing together Peter Boyle (patriarch on TV's "Everybody Loves Raymond"), Jack Warden, Glynis Johns, Michael Rispoli (the closet scene is one to remember), and Bill Pullman. Peter Gallagher charmingly slides right into his "love to hate" character, while Ally Walker confirms a jilted fiancé can be a force to be reckoned with. Fun and entertaining!
6. Reaping the success from her affluent bakery, a woman with grown children decides to renovate the home she won in her divorce years earlier, but her ex-husband resurfaces and wants the family unit back together (especially her). The title is a term used on Facebook to state your personal relationship status. Which answer is the correct title?

Answer: It's Complicated

A tidbit of trivia: The house in the movie that is to be renovated is seemingly perfect as a house in Santa Barbara (location of the movie); however, the property is actually about an hour south of Santa Barbara, an equestrian ranch built in the early 1900s, and was once owned by W.C. Fields. In the movie, it appears as a warm, comfortable home to raise three children, when in fact, it is over 6,000 square feet with over 56 acres in Hidden Valley, CA.
Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, and John Krasinski star.
7. A woman who owns a small chocolaterie in a tiny French town begins to change the lives of the townspeople for the better even though some resisted her talents and friendship. The male love interest is a river gypsy played by Johnny Depp. Do you recall this delicious film's title?

Answer: Chocolat

"Music touches us emotionally, where words alone can't." - Johnny Depp
It's no surprise Depp performs on two tracks of the movie soundtrack.
As an escape from watching his family deteriorate as a young teen, Depp would seclude himself and practice on his guitar. When he was just 15 he became a member of the garage band, The Kids, that proved themselves musically and went on to open for two professional bands, The Talking Heads and The B-52s. He's not just a pretty face!
8. A man can't hold onto the present, much less the immediate past, yet he sets out to find his wife's murderer. Okay, a hint - Posted notes, tattoos, and Polaroid snapshots. Do you recall the title of this "thinking out of the box" movie?

Answer: Memento

I resisted watching this movie, thinking the film's concept of "backward motion" wouldn't hold my attention. Wrong! The film was clever and nothing like it, in my opinion, had been made before its release in 2000. Guy Pearce's character has anterograde amnesia and as intricate as the pieces of the movie may have been, it was filmed just shy of 30 days with much of the dialog purposely improvised. Brad Pitt and Charlie Sheen were considered for the lead but the new up and coming Pearce won the role. I can see Sheen knocking this role out of the ballpark.
9. An English teacher is mentioned in his former student's Oscar acceptance speech several weeks before the teacher's wedding day, stirring up all kinds of speculation in his small town. One memorable scene: "Manly men do not dance!" Name this comedy.

Answer: In and Out

Kevin Kline was phenomenal in this part and had an outstanding supporting cast to create this hysterically funny movie (Joan Cusack, Tom Selleck, Matt Dillon, Bob Newhart, Wilford Brimley and Debbie Reynolds). (Spoiler) Kevin's role is a man coming to terms with his sexuality through amusing situations. Joan Cusack plays his heartbroken fiancee and provides a rock solid supporting role.
10. A retired drug dealer working an honest job, an LA detective who grew up with the ex-drug dealer as boys, and a feisty Italian restaurant owner keep emotions and suspicion on an elevated level. And, where does Carlos fit in? Film title, please?

Answer: Tequila Sunrise

When I know an actor has real acting chops is when he/she delivers emotional vulnerability without overkill and "Tequilla Sunrise" is filled with such deliveries. My most admired example is from Kurt Russell in a scene with Michelle Pfeiffer.
If you like action, plot twists, dramedy, and romance, this movie is worth the ride.
